Orbital Chaos by Jokku

[raw]
made by Jokku for LD 42 (JAM)

Your mission is to launch as many satellites to the orbit as possible. At first this might seem easy but when the satellites start to stack up you will be running out of space pretty fast.

Controls

Move your mouse to automatically switch between the "aim points". aimpoint.png

Press left click to fire a shuttle to the selected "aimpoint". When to shuttle reaches the "aim point" it will place a satellite and return to earth.

The white circle shows the orbit that the satellite will move around earth.

F11 to go fullscreen. F5 to restart game.

And if you hit a planet or a other satellite you lose :)

Credits and afterthoughts

Please feel free to check out HRME he made the awesome music for this game and helped me a lot by testing the game and giving me new ideas.

This was my first time participating in Ludum Dare. Making all the sprites, sounds and code was a lot of fun and I will be participating in future for sure. Sadly I got sick halfway through the jam so the game isn't as polished as I hoped it would be. But I hope you enjoy it and find time to give it a review. ;)

Music is a jam! Space launch mechanic feels great and the suspense generated from watching your ship *almost* hit another satellite is a great feeling. Nice work!

Same concept as our game, but you have a lot better gameplay!
Easy to play, but gets tricky when there is lots of satellites.
And I like the music!

Very fun!
Super easy to grasp, quite hard to make a good score, that's really nice! I really enjoyed the flow like feeling while playing.
I hope your health is better now, thank you for sharing your game :)

@chocolat-endive Glad to hear you enjoyed the game! Balancing for this game was quite hard so I'm happy to hear that I got it to a *good* point. Thanks for the review!

@johnyf Thanks! I came up with the idea by accident when I was trying to make a gravity based space platformer :p

Easy to grasp, fun to play, cool music.
Would be great if it fit on screen and not hide behind by taskbar

@lemadec Thanks! I had a resolution setting in mind but didn't have time to implement it.

![Skärmklipp.PNG](///raw/eb3/z/19f9c.png). This game was my favorite so far
I have a couple of questions @jokku about the design decisions:
* Why can you only shoot in 8 directions?
* Sometimes satellites that have been in orbit a while crash with each other, is that intended?

Great job, many 5's from me

@oskarolausson Really great to hear you enjoyed it!

To answer you questions:

1. Movement of the satellites is controlled by paths. When I made the paths I didn't know how to "code" them in so I made them by hand. So one ring is 8 differend paths so I didn't have time to make more.

2. Satellites crashing in orbit was a bug a thought I fixed. :/ I think the reason for random explosion still happening is due to rotation of the satellites. When the satellites spin around them selfs their hitboxes rotate too. And sometimes if the satellites are really close to each other their hitboxes collide.

Thanks for asking those questions it was fun to answer them. :D

Ah cool, orbiting code is actually pretty easy (and you can just skip collision detection between two things thats already is in orbit).

Code for the orbit is something like

angle += speedOfSatellite; //(in radians or degrees)

x = planetCenterX + cos(angle) \* distance_to_planet;

y = planetCenterY + sin(angle) \* distance_to_planet;

(I am telling you this because I hope you continue on the game )

Really unique idea, I liked it. There should be some main menu screen with the instructions, but I assume that you didn't have enough time.
Keep up the good work!

I couldn't get past 36 but omg was that fun! I played many times. Maybe a fun factor would be if randomly when you launched a satellite it would be a different type that had varied speeds compared to others.

Unique game, very simple to pick up yet it gets even more challenging the more you play it. the decision of which orbit to send the satellite to adds a layer of depth which is really enjoyable. well done!

I like the deceitful simple nature this game has and how easy it is to pick up and play. Often I would think "I'm fine" and fire off a shuttle only to realize (that thing it going to crash on the way back...oh, poop) lol I think working towards a goal like sending one shuttle to each point would be a welcomed addition to the game, give it a goal, and make it more challenging. However, some may like the ability to chose their own point as many times as they want so perhaps a goal of total shuttles sent ;)

I like the music in this game! I launched satellites into the smallest orbit and could not start any more. Next time I need to think about strategy better. Good game, I would like to see it on mobile devices!

This is a really nice design with a great risk reward mechanic. I imagine that with some more tasks to accomplish and resources to manage, it could be expanded into a very fun finished product!
