A Miner's Life by oddarock

[raw]
made by oddarock for LD 44 (JAM)

Aminerlife.png

The game

Play a miner who needs to feed an horrible Alien with gems to regain life.

But there is a twist, a stock exchange system determines how much life each type of gems is worth.

stock.png

You'd better feed the right gem at the right time to stay alive.

Your life is definitely a currency for this sadistic Alien....

Controls

Classic platformer controls: - arrows left and right to move - spacebar to jump - walk over the gems to grab them - walk over the alien to feed the alien - head to the wall to wallglide

very interesting approach on the theme, its very painful to see myself crawling up through the spikes, i like it that it was not immediate death ... at first the characters seemed to be a backpacker to me though

Really liked the game.
It adheres to the theme in an interesting way, controls are good and the graphics are nice to look at.
The music fits with the setting and there are enough mechanics that all work together to make it an interesting and fun game.
Also, the stock exchange mechanic is really fun, but to me it seemed a bit too easy, as I almost never fell under 70 life.
Very good game, though!

There's a lack of sfx, to the moment you start climbing to the moment you jump, lands, over a mushroom and even takes damage, also add more ambience to the cave.

Thanks for playing and leaving comments !

@velvetlobster : thanks for the info we'll probably add some mining tools in his hands ;)

@bootlegjoe : during the tests we found it was quite hard to play so we lowered the difficulty, good to know it is not that hard !

@ivan-garcia-filho : the sfx are definitely in our todo list for the post jam !

Even though your take on the theme didn't click for me, I have to appreciate the combination of the mechanisms (especially the exchange system). I think that the game would benefit from the lack of tutorial since a lot of the mechanism are intuitive (e.g. spikes will damage me) or it would be fun to find out for myself – not a fan of the text-heavy tutorial. Overall, an enjoyable experience that might be worth exploring more. Thank you!

The idea is amazing. Although, the tutorial is painfully long and verbal. I believe that without the descriptions it would be intuitive enough. The audio is also a bit repetitive. Still, good job!

Interesting game and the stocks make me think of the money I lost in the stock market, cry.

Props to Ethan and Remi right off the bat, the music is amazing and creates the atmosphere instantly! The art was nice and I really loved the death animation! The game was a bit too hard for my liking but all in all a great job, all of you!

Good entry. I'd fine tune those collision boxes a little bit. When you've got spikes to avoid, the collision areas should be pixel perfect.

I liked the gem stock ticker.

Nice game liked the music but needs sound effects for hurting etc, and yeah agree with above game is a tad to hard :)

I loved the game! The platforming was quite nice and the ending was amazing, but I think the spikes where a bit too easy to hit.

the movement feels a bit clunky, a bit slow acceleration.

But overall it is fairly nice! I liked the fact you could find some hidden content :)

cool game! you need to work a bit on the balancing! i think especially the stock system doenst do what it is supposed to since i was just gathering items not caring about their worthiness.. still very cool!

The player is a lttile slow for me, mostly for a die and retry game. Start the whole level for an error is very frustrating when the player is slow!

Very nice tutorial, nice mechanics it's not easy to have thoses features like walljumps!

Very cool game, and interesting approach to the theme. The only things that I would change is the level design on the first stage to a easier one and the speed that the life decreases, its too fast in my opinion. Anyway very good entry and it's cool to see that you worked with your sons. I hope you guys had fun.

The animations of the character are really nice! I really liked the game, but I didn´t feel like the stock system was too relevant, I wasn´t even paying attention to it and completed the game second try anyways.

Didn't get very far but did like it. Since it's definitely a die-retry-die sort of game it would've been really nice if that flow was a lot faster. Enjoyed it though!
