Shark Barrage by borjan1peovski

[raw]
made by borjan1peovski for LD 42 (COMPO)

A game in which you find yourself stuck on a small raft in the middle of the ocean. Sharks will try and eat you(and your raft) and you will have to shoot them. You lose by running out of space on your raft and no longer being able to avoid the sharks.

Use WASD to move and the mouse to shoot.

This is my first time participating in a game jam and although the game is not great, I'm happy I got to finish it.

Software used: Unity 2018.2.3f1, Photoshop, Bosca Ceoil, Bfxr

Nice entry for your first Jam! Everything played smoothly, which, in itself, is quite a win. I like the idea of collecting fins to upgrade stuff. It's a nice game loop that encourages me to play again and again. Great work!

I had a pretty dang good time playing this. "You might want to get a hat to cover that bald head" made me audibly laugh. Very challenging and fun. GOOD GAME!

Loved it! Liked the idea of an upgrade system to keep me playing. Loved the honesty as well (Raft is a good game 😂)

Nice work, I thought the graphics were great, and I liked the idea. I wasn't crazy about the music, it seemed too relaxed for when you're being attacked by sharks. I might not have gotten far enough, but some other shark types or swim patterns would be great.

I like the concept, but the thing I don't like is that sharks can actually kill you. I think it would be better if they could only eat your ship, so you know survival and stuff. Anyway it is fun, so good job!

@rafig Thanks, I agree with you. Made it this way in the beginning because it was easier and just stuck with it.

@rargrave The music was the last thing I focused on and it was done in about an hour of fiddling so it makes sense that it isn't the best part. Thanks for the feedback though.

The concept is alright, but this game suffers some issues that I think if improved would improve the game immensely. Firstly, the audio suffers from distortion and crackling. Secondly, I think the way you've implemented the progression mechanic is a poor fit for your target audience (other ludum dare creators) as they tend to play these games very briefly. It took forever to unlock the kalashnikov. The main issue with this game is that it's fairly repetitive and there's no real skill involved, as your destiny is set in stone and the only variables to control it are your upgrades.

However, I still enjoyed it enough to unlock the kalashnikov and start blowing those sharks up! Thanks for the entry, hope to see more entries to come from you in the future :)

I streamed playing this game here: https://www.twitch.tv/ildfuglen - You can watch the VOD when it becomes available. (It's around 32 minutes in)

@ildfuglen Thanks for your feedback. It's nice that I got to see someone playing the game from start to finish and giving their opinion and criticism. Was a little disappointed you didn't read any of the death screen texts, one of them says: "Yes, this is inspired by Raft.". Since you asked, I used the Capsule Collider 2D on the sharks. I now understand that using a collider for the bullets was a bad idea. Didn't focus much on adjusting the price on the upgrades which is probably why they're so expensive, makes me wonder how many people got the kalashnikov. Also the shooting sound messed up when i exported it to WebGl that's why it sounded distorded. I'll try not to repeat the same mistakes next time.

Hope to more entries from you too. Although this is my first time participating I have watched ludum dare gameplay before and just found out you also made dungeon scrawl, which I also thought was well made and polished.

Wow, great fresh idea for a theme! I played with pleasure in this game. It would be nice to add more opportunities to kill sharks :)

Nice idea and nice entry for a first Jam !
I would have preferred to improve my equipment during the game (maybe between two waves) but good job :)

Nice game, little bit grindy but you know i kept playin to get the kalishnikov.
Really liked the simple animations in the game, the swimming shark looks nice and smooth.

Really nice game for a first jam. As some people have said, the Kalashnikov was a little grindy to get, but other than that, I really liked it.

Nice little game, good job with completing your first jam! A good idea and a good foundation to add things. Iterative games with upgrading is nice, I really like that. It keeps me playing, if nothing else just to try the different weapons etc.

Great game for a first attempt! The game seemed to play well, and it seems like every few attempts there's something new to play for. I think a different progression system could be used (e.g. every few minutes the sharks go away and you have time to repair your boat and buy upgrades), but overall, well done!

I appreciate your game. Like ours, classic but effective. One idea to improve the difficulty curve is to create different types of sharks (requiring less or moor shoot to kill);

I loved the sound of the sharks when they docked on my raft, althought for some reason they kept furiourly swimming.

Adding upgrades was a nice way to keep people playing longer. One thing I would tweak is that there are times when you keep getting shark after shark from the same direction, and you are on a sure way to lose, no matter what you do.

Great entry for your first jam, keep up the good work!

Pretty fun ! A little hard at the beginning but that was very good ! Maybe if the speed of the sharks increase every kills it could be better ;)

Congrats on your first game!
At first I was a bit frustrated how weak and slow the gun was. Then I found out that there are updates, nice feature! I thought that there were too many sharks too soon... ;)

Sometimes the player character was moving at the start of the level. I think I would like the player to turn around his head, in stead of around the gun.
