Space Grunge! by Xanderrread

[raw]
made by Xanderrread for LD 42 (JAM)

A Fast paced puzzle game , with a retro feel. Pace through traps and obstacles to reach the end checkpoint and progress. This game is nothing short of a challenge and is not meant for a gamer looking for a breeze. CAN YOU MAKE IT TO THE END? I promise all levels are possible and there is in fact an end to Space Grunge even if only a few will reach it. Every level has been play tested by many people!

lclclc.PNG

-Use space & the cursor to move around -Use the 'r' key to restart the level

You play as a space ship stuck in the middle of the galaxy with a limited amount of fuel. Use your fuel wisely in order to reach the checkpoint that is often located between a jungle of traps and obstacles. HOW DOES THIS FIT THE THEME?: Well your fuel is controlled by the Spacebar and your fuel is very limited. Therefore you are quite literally running out of SPACE! XD

Is it real to complete this one? https://imgur.com/a/YCaoV7V . Or you just add impossible last level? :)
Simple mechanics, but hard game - as for me I love this concept.

@team-on Yes absolutely, I believe there are actually 2 more levels after that one . Try aiming the cursor perfectly in the middle of the the rotating traps! Thanks for giving it a go much appreciated, glad you enjoyed it :)

Finally managed to beat it legit. It turns out that you can slide between the side of the screen and the walls on the final level and bypass all the obstacles I haven't found a way to reach it (always 1 boost away): https://1drv.ms/u/s!AnSWdyn2Avfvhfc8yMx-_fEQoMxLtA

I like the simplistic vibes going on with the art, sound, and design that combine to make something neat. Doesn't really fit the theme tho (even with the explanation), which is fine for this jam, so no need to force it! Good effort overall! :D

@drell Thanks man, I would have to agree that this game probably could of incorporated the theme a bit more :) Thanks for the comments, valued feedback

@the-triumvirate Wow very impressive! It takes true skill to beat this game and well done on being one of the only people to have reached the end, quite an achievement! Thanks for the positive feedback :)

Got to add something: it would be nice if the camera started centered on the player with every retry, it's a bit unnerving to wait for the camera to center... but as already said, apart from that, it's some very great game!

@the-triumvirate Yeh good idea! I can implement it with just one of code so thanks for the tip!

Incredible game! I beat the whole thing! If you added more levels and sold it I would definitely buy it! It was fun and had a very clever take on the theme, which it used to create an innovative, unique, and fun experience! One of the only issues I had was that the direction walls bounced you in seemed somewhat inconsistent, so it made it harder to figure out how to efficiently use the fuel blasts, because sometimes the walls would screw you over. Other than that the game ran wonderfully and was very polished, it felt great to play! Maybe it's just because I tend to love rage games, but this was one of my personal favorites! Great job!

@purrfexionator After submitting the game I realised exactly the same thing :), the collision box on the player means sometimes the wall bounces you in an odd direction. Thanks so much for the positive feedback and I will definitely look to add to this game in the future! I am so glad you enjoyed it.

Great game, everything fits together nicely. The only problems I had were about the camera and bouncing. The camera starts in a weird place and moves slowly to barely show where I want to go. Bounces don't want to obey physics, and I would sometimes get stuck in the blocks. This only happens at high angles of incidence. I'm guessing it's having a collision with two different blocks at a horizontal and vertical face, so velocity is reversed entirely. A solution to this would be to disable the collisions on a specific face when another block is beside it. Also, the last level was easier than level 4.

Awesome game. I was pleasantly suprised with the overall mood of the game. Hope you develop a post jam version for this!

@capital-asterisk Yep thanks for reporting the issues, the bounce system was coded in about 5 min and I am aware of the problem it was just the simplest way of doing it in a quick period of time :). I don't think the problem is what you suggested. Ha Ha I would actually have to disagree with you with the last level not being the hardest, maybe you got a bit lucky XD. Thanks for the advice and I appreciate you leaving some rlly useful feedback

@zicboy I have definitely fixed all bugs and I might do a bit more work on some new obstacles but I doubt it will turn into a long-term project but thanks for playing it. I'm so glad you enjoyed it!
