Running Out Of Tiles by BORB

[raw]
made by BORB for LD 39 (JAM)

anim.gif

Collect tiles to create floor to run on.

Gameplay inspired by, umm, this: http://i.imgur.com/567DHDu.gif

Keyboard / x360 controller:

A / A : jump

S / LT : run

D / B : collect

Space / X : create

F4 : full screen ESC : quit

Psst... There's a secret ending!

Game made with LÖVE, levels with Tiled, graphics with Aseprite, and musics with Bosca Ceoil by Em!

At this point, the game is quickly walked through - I'm definitely doing a post-jam version of this. Stay tuned!

linux users can run the .love file (hosted in itch.io, see third link) with LÖVE: https://love2d.org/

Hey. The Concept is looking good and interesting. But i have to say the controls are a bit sluggish and the key selection is a bit unusual.
The level design is good and the mechanics are simple to understand. But also I'm a bit sad about that the restart feature is missing.

But after all it is playable and makes fun. So i hope to see a after jam version :)

Very solid little concept and I actually found myself laughing out loud a few times.

The concept is nicely adaptable and can definitely be take further.

I did find the controls a little fiddly but that's not a big deal in the scheme of things.

Had a great time playing it.

Good idea! but kinda short game! SOme more levels playing more and going deeper with these interesting mechanics would be cool. Also the music stopped for some reason at the fist level. Overall, cool game, good job!

Any chance for a Mac or web build? I'd love to give this a try!

Yes you are right, life isn't so easy without restart button :D but the game is pretty good. Good job!

What a unique and interesting mechanic. I would love to see it expanded upon, I am sure it could turn into a very nice puzzle game, it already is great (short, but sweet). Here is me playing through the game: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mPcU4lW7maU

Very well done! :)

This concept can go places, with various tile types and all.

In the meantime, nice DOS sorta a e s t h e t i c

Your choice of keys for jumping, running, collecting and creating could have been more intuitive. Having the jump key so close to the run key was difficult to get used to. Similarly, your restart method, though funny, could have been more user-friendly. I really like your game mechanic. I would've liked to seen it used in more challenging way, given the scarcity of levels. Maybe implement moving enemies or obstacles. Anything that would make using the mechanic as face-paced as the Wallace and Gromit .gif that influenced you to make this game would work well. Good job and good luck on the post-jam version of this game!

Nice game! There is only one problem: the operation is a bit awkward for me.

Short but agree with others the keys were a bit hard to get used to. Managed to get to the end. I can see this concept being a good puzzler with more time and refinement (and more rooms)

A great little game, with a lot of potential. The 2600-ish art style really fits the old-school platforming mechanics. Can't wait to see more!

@simonhutchinson I finally managed to build a mac version, try it out! (No one has tested it yet and I haven't got a mac so I don't even know if it works)

The concept is nice but its really hard to get used to the key mappings (as you often press dash and try to jump), and i feel like the block grabbing mechanic isn't very sensitive to collecting so blocks that are laid out can't be collected back sometimes.

The screenshot was promising, so I downloaded a love interpreter (with the right version!) for GNU/Linux debian just to play this one! (beware, if you use love 0.9.x (debian default) it will kinda work, except for the space key, which is pretty essential to this game ...).

The engine seems solid, and the player movement is pleasant. I'd happily spend many hours playing a game like this one. Went to the end, too bad there only are a few rooms!

Some negative points:
- the music is a bit too short :-)
- the controls are incredibly hard to grasp, to a point that this might be considered a feat of strength!
- no restart button

Those are of course easily changeable details, the gameplay is definitely here and I say: very good job!

Really nice idea! I included it in my Ludum Dare 39 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6qvdJmOzeNg

The first 6 notes of music were super promising, but then it stopped and the game remained silent for the rest of the game? Weird.

I was carefully saving my cubes in anticipation of running out, but it turns out we have plenty!

Having a secret ending makes the game feel much bigger than if it had a few extra rooms, good call!

This is a neat concept! Like others, I disagree with your key-mapping, but that's an easy fix. Really I just wished there were more levels, a little more graphic polish, and constant music with a few sound effects. Otherwise this was cool:)

Cool concept, I found both of the endings! :)

Like others, I had issues with the controls. I was playing on gamepad and found it pretty awkward hold down B while using A to jump. I think there are a few options here, mapping B to a trigger instead would work quite well, I think.

The platforming feel could also be improved, I think making the jump floatier and giving the walk a weightier feel with a more gradual momentum would make it feel quite a bit better.

Anyways, it's a nice effort, I'd like to see this polished and extended with the mechanic used in some new ways.

The concept is great, and I really like the screen transitions. Like others have pointed out, the controls could use some tweaking and more sounds and music would be cool. I just got some kind of tiny music clip when starting the game. With some polishing and more work, this could end up being really nice! For now, what's there is good for a jam:D

Well done!

I like the idea very much (a powerful one;-). the game is demanding. Very cool what I could call puzzle-platformer. Levels should be design so as the player cannot trap himself with the platforms he creates. Anyway, your concept deserves a full and polished post-jam version;-)
