Classic Games: Getting On by loveapplegames

[raw]
made by loveapplegames for LD 39 (JAM)

In this game we get to meet some of the classic game characters again, or what has become of them!

The handheld console is getting old and glitchy, and the battery is behaving oddly. Run over glitches to charge the battery before it runs out. As the battery charges, the game plays faster and faster!

Each game has five levels. The goal is to complete each game in as little time as possible.

SOME HELPFUL INFO:

  • To use the walker, hold it in front of you until the barrel bounces off.

Background: We wanted to have two different takes of the theme in this game. One is that there is a battery level that also changes the game speed, and the player is supposed to increase the speed as much as possible to the point that the game is barely playable. A second is that the actual games are parodies that have a proverbial reference to running out ("getting on").

In retrospect we would like to have started implementing earlier. Doing game parodies is fun, and we would have liked to flesh them out more. Some ideas, in particular to make the games more original, did not get implemented. For example, we wanted the Pacman game to fail a level when the Ms.Pacman eats more dots that the player does.

Nice games, everything about drugs :D.
I can't passed 1st level in Donkey Kong Senior, maybe I can't properly use walker :/ .

Fun trip down memory lane. The levels got pretty darn hard. I couldn't figure out how to use the walker in the Donkey Kong senior mode - it didn't seem to do anything to the barrels. The others made sense. The Qbert level where you switched the tiles back every time you landed was very hard. Nice work!

This is pretty well done! Not only did you implement a game, you implemented three. The graphics and sounds were a great fit, and there didn't seem to be any bugs I could find. The glitch idea, well I'm not sure how glitches recharge a battery, but it WAS kind of neat to see the game speed up. I personally think it'd be cool if there were more glitches, but maybe that's just a game balance thing. Admittedly, most of the ideas here were taken from classic games...and I personally wasn't too impressed with the "years later" sort of storyline, but I guess you have to start somewhere!

I loved your aestethics!!! Music and sound effects are good, but I would prefer 8-bit style.

I really enjoyed the donkey kong senior game, and I'm impressed you got 3 games in for the price of one!

Super fast-paced; I like it. Good audio too, it goes with it well. Pressing the P key automatically completes levels? But yeah this was pretty good all together, even if it's a bit rage educing. I don't feel like you really needed two levels for each considering how difficult they were, so maybe you should've made the first level on each one easier. Nicely done!

3 games instead of 1. The backstory to the games were top fun!

But... how... in 72 hours.... ?? The amount of work you have done here is incredible. I love the music and sound design, the art is very well stylized, and the gameplay was pretty satisfying. That being said, the difficulty may have been a little high. Overall, this was a very impressive entry!

Hey this was great! I give mad ratings to any game with drugs use :D
I particularly liked how you used the theme by framing these games within a handheld console running out of juice. Clever!

It was a little tedious going back and forth between keyboard for game input and mouse for menu. "space or enter to retry, esc to go back to menu" would make it a bit easier.

As for the games themselves, it's clever reimagining of the classics. The theme seemed to be shoehorned in. All games were pretty good, but I wonder if it would've been better to focus on one rather that divide effort among three?

Really humorous and fun reprocessing of the old classics :D The fading of your battery power gives the whole thing a thrilling component. Good work!
