Flat Builder by Drauthius

[raw]
made by Drauthius for LD 42 (JAM)

The world is running out of space. There are more people than available living space. The only solution is to get creative and build flats (apartments) over ravines and jutting out from cliff walls.

Enjoy a relaxing physics game, where you get to place support beams and flats of different sizes, to fulfill certain requirements.

Great game, love the whacky physics. Wish it wouldn't reset everything I placed when trying a level again.

Great idea, impressive physics sim. Loved that you made a HTML5 version too.
Could have done with a bit of a tutorial, and there was no 'win' condition that i could see.

Alright game, though sometimes the joints break instantly when you press play

Nice game ! :) Graphics are nice and the idea and scenario are very great. I really liked the building system. On the other hand, the BGM is a bit repetitive. But the entire game still very greate and nicely finished for a game that has been making in 3 days.

In the browser game have bad resolution so I could see only half or qurater of screen. But by looking on screens I think that game can be good. Good luck!

Cool and interesting game. I didn't understand the dollar amount in the corner and the text was a little hard to read but I enjoyed the game, I think it has potential to be a full 20 or 30 level game.

Interesting idea, not sure if you pulled it off too well though honestly. It felt a bit clunky to me. But I kind of assume you didn't have enough time to make it perfect, it was an ambitious idea I think for something to make in 3 days.

I really like the idea. Sadly i found it unplayable as the joints broke instantly as soon as I started the simulation (even without any buildings, and just using very simple patterns). Tested the Web and Windows version and had the same issue on both.

I liked the concept, but I cannot see the first floor of the building :/ I win the first stage putting all rooms horizontally :) I tried it on html5 and winx64

First and foremost: thank you all for playing our game!

@slojanko: Yeah, we were running out of time and energy-drinks XD But I believe the whole team agrees that it would have been a nice feature to be able to go back in time to what your build looked like prior to any structural failure and such.

Several people run into issues when running the html5 version. Please download and run the executables if you find the html5 version unplayable for you.

For those of you who find your constructions constantly breaking, I personally recommend building the basic beam-works, press the play button and wait for the whole shebang to come to rest. I believe the simulation will automatically stop after four seconds. Then please continue building, and repeat the process of playing and letting the construction come to rest.

@hauo I'm curious how you placed your beams to make them instantly break. I'd be much obliged if you were to post an image :)

Good point, should have added a view of what's actually happening. I don't think I'm doing anything odd with my building, but you can see my issue here:

Using the Windows version on this one.

I love these kind of building games because things always go horrible wrong. I would love to see the building be lived in and additional stresses be added. It would be fun to see cartoony people in the buildings. The game you have is a lot of fun to play when it works.

adding a spending limit was a pretty good idea for this type of game. it's a pretty decent idea for a more fleshed out game too. if you keep going with this idea, I think I'd like to see rooms of different weights, and possibly adjacency requirements that force more interesting layouts (like the boiler room must be next to a power generator room or something.

Nice work :)

What a fun concept, I had a good time playing. It seems like you could do a lot with expanding the mechanics from here! What I would appreciate the most is some kind of info at the start about what it takes to break a joint, so I could have a better understanding of what kind of structure would survive.

I think you got the theme of the jam down really well, but I think a couple of things went wrong in the execution. Maybe I'm just really bad at it, but I could not for the life of me build anything remotely stable. Even the most basic structures ended up collapsing under their own weight (not exploding like HAUO above), so I think some stronger beams would make it a bit more easy to play. The music was a little hectic when compared to the gameplay, so maybe slowing it down and using softer instruments might help the feel. Finally, the tutorial's textbox was too small and too blurry to read.

Super cool game! Feels very intuitive and solid, and I'm surprised you got the physics to work in a weekend!
