Cronus' Tomb 2 by Mr_Field
Cronus is back at it again with his stinky taint, taking over the world during the quite dim Dark Ages. His taint expands, slowly destroying all life in its path. Will you take up arms for your kingdom? Or will you get too frustrated to finish the game because it's pretty damn hard.
We've got:
Action!

Adventure!

Platforming!

Puzzle! (singular)

What more could you want?
Z - Jump / Interact X - Sword Slash // Hold X for a charge attack Arrows to move.
TIP: Dungeons closer to the outskirts are shorter and generally easier than others.
Good Luck.
We'd love to hear from you if you managed to beat the game, so feel free to let us know!

Genuinely good game though.
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it.
The Consuming Shadow was a bit of an accidental inspiration with the whole ritual deal, although I didn't really have the time or experience to make the random dungeon aspect work as well as I would've liked.
The length of the dungeons is based on how close they are to the edge of the map, since you'd have less time to try and compelte those. Some of the closer ones might end up a bit too long for their own good as a result though, something that'd definitely need tweaking if there's ever a post jam version.
I appreciate the detailed comment, thanks very much! :)
Really cool entry overall that needs more ratings!
it's very easy to accidentally quit by hitting escape, unfortunately
great work overall!
The thing that works least well for me is the difficulty curve... I was struggling a lot to beat any of the caves for my first 30 minutes playing or so. I think the controls felt a little slippery. Once I finally beat a cave and was able to upgrade my health, it was much easier to beat the other ones. It would have been nicer if I wasn't so fragile when I started. (I know the caves on the edges are supposed to be easier.)
Some bugs or other problems:
- ESC just quits the game without prompting, which can be pretty rough if you're in Cronus's tomb or trying to exit the shop and don't understand what button you're supposed to press! (I shouldn't complain -- my game does this too. :))
- If you hit the skeleton with a sword and shield a second time while he's in the air, he just turns white and invulnerable forever!
- There are a couple of places where falling into spikes is just death even if you have a lot of health, which seemed sorta mean.
- It takes like 10 seconds to start up on my computer?
Anyway, this was solid all around. Thanks for making it!
It's so good to hear that someone had beat it!
I definitely agree with you on the difficulty curve, it was definitely a concern I had, but due to a lack of time and experience with creating randomly generated games, the dungeons don't really have any kind of difficulty scale to them and ended up as bit of a mess of rooms of random difficulty. Something I'll definitely keep in mind if there's ever a post jam version.
Thanks for detailing the issues, the start-up problem is an interesting one.
I'm glad you enjoyed the game. ;)
The graphics are really good and so is the music and sounds. My biggest gripe with the game is the feeling of the movement. To me it feels to... heavy/floaty but that might just be me being bad :P
A very solid entry!
Whenever I play a new game from the jam I'm always very skeptical at first because I don't know how good the game is going to be but with this one that feeling gave way to enthusiasm about the game world very quickly. I wanted to explore the map and unlock the upgrades in the shop. After many tries however, I was starting to get frustrated with the movement controls and enemy behaviour and lost interest.
Graphics and sound design suit this very well, simple but very efficient. The "clue" mechanic is cleverly designed - it calls for a ton of implicit choices, despite (again) the scarcity of information. This one mechanic is the link between everything else in the game, which I find makes the whole a beautiful piece of game design.
This is one of the few games that I can't really point out weak points in - it does perfectly what it wants to do. I could only wish for it to expand further :)
I'm a bit sad that the game is so hard, because I only manage to get to the first dongeon, die after getting a few gold coins, go to the shop to heal, rince and repeat :(
However, you manage to hook me, I will try it again later. So Really awesome first impression, but then a bit disapointed by the brutal difficulty of the game. Good work!
