NOTE FOR JUDGES

To get The Swarm working on macOS I've had to change the rendering pipeline (HDRP doesn't work on macOS apparently), which has massive implications to the visuals of the game as some shaders had to be rewritten and post processing had to be adjusted to mitigate the changes, and to keep bug fix parity with the Windows/Linux versions I've had to change their visuals too, so please keep that in mind when judging. If you'd like to see the original visuals the Windows version will remain available for download on itch.io without the bug fixes, obviously.

Keyboard and mouse

Theses little Aliens are too cool =) I had some performance issues but the game is good, and I really liked the intro!!

Great game! It looks very polished and I really like your graphics style. The gameplay itself is also good. The only thing I would critice would be that I don't shoot in the direction of my mouse. Only using the mouse to rotate my shooting direction is a little bit counter intuitive.
But generally a very good submission, thank you!

@monetai: Thanks! I have submitted a new build that fixes some performance issues, bugs and some balance.

@plukers: Glad you enjoyed it! I only realized the mouse bug after submission. I need to look into that.

@earnso: I was going to, but unfortunately the current build doesn't work on Mac, I'll need to change some things to get it going. Watch this space!

Looks and sounds amazing. Sadly performance issues make it very hard to play (I downloaded the new version to try later)

Nice little idea, and looking at the itch.io something you've kept working on (which is always good).
I enjoyed the graphics alot, especially the aliens.

Keep at it!

Liked the way that the acid was both an obstacle and means to remove boxes.

Nice game, I enjoyed it a lot, there is some great mood to it. I didn't get right away that the aliens blood was actually acid and died the first time because I kept walking into it. I think some better sound design when taking damage or a hissing noise when getting burn by the acid would have been great. I loved the sound the alien made and I think it would have been even better with some animations (for the aliens) / visual feedback when shooting. Overall a solid entry :)

The game has some of the best weapon feel I've encountered during this LD ; blasting these little aliens is a joy ! The graphics are really neat, and make for a blurry/distant aesthetic that adds a lot to the mood of the game. The audio was great too. Changing the placement of the life/ammo indicators would make the whoole thing a lot clearer and easier, it's not always easy to keep an eye on your health while shooting your way to a new highscore.

The graphics in this were great! The gameplay reminded me a lot of the old Blockhead flash games.

I wish there was more music instead of just ambient background noise but that's just me.

Overall it was pretty fun!

@lootgrounds @thatsommes @robo-chiz @swift @bredera @jlv @fakefirefly @swift Thanks for the kind words! It's so cool to know you like it!
@thatsommes the new version should perform MUCH better now. Unity HDRP is not suitable for all situations :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

@swift it's not really FOR removing boxes, the boxes contain useful items :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

@mrsylar59 Thanks for the feedback, I have every one of those issues on my list for future updates already  I just feel that implementing them now will skew votes, so they'll go in down the line.

PS Could I ask you lovely people to rate my game on Itch? I'm really trying to get my cred up there, thanks! :joy_cat:

This is probably my favorite game from others in this game jam that i have played. I used to play a lot of these types of indie games when i was younger. This game really hit the spot for me. I found it very difficult at first due to the lack of instructions. However, once i realized how the mechanics worked, meaning switching weapons, shooting the different barrels to get water to wash away the green goo, shooting the different crates to get more ammo, etc, the game became very fun and addicting. I love the little alien like dudes that come out and attack you they are very cute. I wish there was just more to do in the game like upgrades or better weapons. A nice main menu would do the game well. The little starting animation is cool also and could still be played. Id be cool if the boxes that resupply you had a bit less health or you could kick them open cause i would waste all my ammo shooting one box and almost run out. Maybe putting a small reload time in could help also. Staging each level or giving the player more time in between so the player can clear some of the goo would make the game pace a bit smoother. My high score at the end was around 250 sec. Really great Job! :)

@noah-beckman Thanks for the feedback! (EDIT: you can kick the crates open in the latest version :thumbsup_tone1: ) Everything you mentioned is either on my list already or going on there now. I suggest trying to get to 300 seconds  There's a pretty cool surprise

The graphics and mood are great. And the gameplay is very solid. There are lots of surprise in these supply cates, the autocannon is my favorite. Nice Game!

@zlabya Thanks! I've not won yet so i can't say for sure 😜 @noah-beckman got to 250 secs, so it should be possible, but it won't be easy. I may send out a balance release to ease it up a bit.

Cute graphics and sounds. I had issues with mouse aim. Using Win64 version at both 1280 x 720 and 16 x 10.

10/10, would run around in circles hoping for an ammo drop that won't ever come while a bunch of aliens are chasing me as I stumble into their acidic blood again. Great work on the visuals - simple yet very nice. Same for the audio. It was fun to play and is a good format for a jam game.

Thanks for the feedback @gregwlyons @chrissx2. I just tested and I see what's happening, looks like a bug in the new Unity Input System. I'll see if I can get a patch out for that soon. You can mitigate the effect by moving your window to the top-left of your screen.

@andrei9 @erikiene @timbelion Thanks!

Man, this game has some seriously worked-on ambiance... It struck me how well the graphics, soundtrack and gameplay style fit together. It's tense and eery, just what's needed for this kind of game.

I enjoyed this submission's gameplay as well, it's quite fun and addictive !! I wish there was more ennemy variety, and such other things you might have thought about that would expand the game further... Anyway, this is high-quality work for a 3-day jam, congratulations ! :)

Great gameplay, it's difficult but as you play more you get better, it's interesting how the "blood" of the enemies limit the space due damage, good idea xD
Love the graphics! even that they are quite simple they look great, pretty well managed!
I would have liked some music or something but that's all.
Well done!

Ok, I udated my score. I was finally able to play it (playing it in a windowed mode is no go :P). It's pretty damn fun game. I loved to blow up the tanks to clear up the floor a bit (the fx of the foam is pretty cool). I also got random turret from a box which was a super nice surprise :D

Really nice entry!

The increasing acid pools fit the theme well, and I appreciate that there is a way to fight them with the blue barrels.

The guns felt meaty (especially the turrets and the shotgun). I didn't realize at first that I could switch weapons (I tried using the mouse wheel, as I noticed picking up different boxes). Maybe some HUD display of the different ammo counts to make clear there are definitely different weapons.

The aliens are kind of cute and kind of terrifying. And their swarming behaviour works well with the confined space and the acid pools.

I was a little disappointed that acid pools kept eating my ammo. I think that's a nice mechanic, but I think it could happen a bit slower and with a little feedback (like they fizz for a while). The blue canisters also get eaten by the acid and don't spawn a white foam explosion when they die from acid, which I felt was a rule tweaked a little too harshly against the player.

There's a lot of really nice touches, like the aliens creating some acid particles as they travel over acid, and the white foam looks beautiful.

The kick attack seemed a bit unreliable. I imagine there's a long cooldown or something? But I didn't notice any feedback as to why it's sometimes possible to kick and othertimes not.

The rendering is really great, with the depth of field and the slight darkening as you lose health.

I felt like the alien and box health was a bit high. Personally I'd have preferred more aliens with less health, or if the aliens reacted more to being hit (shooting them a few times before getting any reaction isn't ideal in terms of satisfaction).

Smashing the boxes got a lot more satisfying after I discovered a turret in one of them :)

Sorry if this post seems a bit nitpicky. I'm only pointing out these little tweaks because the fundamentals in this game are really strong.

@evangreenwood Not nit picky at all, I've been tinkering on The Swarm in my spare time and I've already addressed many of the issues that you've raised, so great minds and all that :P

Thanks for the feedback!
