Overshadowed Road by MarioY19

[raw]
made by MarioY19 for LD 39 (COMPO)

The Road gets darker as time progresses. Collect batteries to keep the lights on. You have the ability to remove obstacles by spending some power. When you have enough energy, the lights will turn green. Press SPACE. Use A and D to change lanes. ESC to pause. R to restart.

My internet died during the last few hours, so it was quite a panicked scramble to get things finalised and uploaded. I'm a little bit pleased with the result, it's not the best, and I had hours of issues with collides. But it was a good attempt after taking a break from game design for so long.

I enjoyed the game. Not entirely sure how the theme applied though.

Not sure what happens when the lights go green but good compo concept.

Very clever using the music and light to show power level meaning a UI element was not required. Would definitely play this game.

Nice implementation of the theme into an endless (?) runner.

Everything seems polished, I liked especially how the power is implemented with the car light as well as with the environment light. Also the background music is good.

The Houses look great.

If I´m thinking of potential to improve, the only thing is that I would prever to only change one row at pressing the button, not at staying on it.
But thats nitpicking.

Good job!

Despite it's simplicity quite fun to play. Really clever use of surroundings to show power status.

Fun game with very good visual and music. I agree with @gilborn about changing one row only when pressing the button (or making the change a little slower). Also, I think the difficulty could be more interesting with less battery.

The background music was very good! The game in itself was fun but the controls were to fast, was not easy enough to only change one lane.

Looks great! All aspects of the game, models, lights, effects, sound are nice and soft. And mechanics with increasing and decreasing the total light in this way is very interesting. Well done!

Toughest with the Hold versus tap control as "hold" controls makes it tougher to have precise input. Pretty fun though and was def getting into the music :)

Very well done! I like how you don't *have* to die when lights go out but you will die either way haha

I like that it's basically just a spin on AudioSurf, but the audio was honestly annoying, and the controlls seem too sensivite for my liking.

Also, the GUI seemed kinda off; next time try to use custom graphics for it, and allow better navigation through the elements! :)

Hey!
I liked the buildings background with the lights, good job on that.

I feel that this game is so easy, it has not flow.

Maybe with more obstacles and less speed would be better in my opinion.

I know it's a compo so, nice work! :)

Nice simple game. I liked the colors changing on the city, even if took me a while to see it's meaning. I found the game too hard at first, because I though you had to get several battery before using your special power. But once I saw that you could use it pretty much after each battery, the game became too easy, with no real threat anymore. The UI was a bit annoying because you had to use the mouse to restart, the keyboard was not enough. But it was fun to play, keep up the good work.

Funny game ! A classic runner, but with a twist.
Maybe there's a little work needed on the controls (too sensitive) and the level design (some patterns are really hard), but I like the music !

Good job :)

This is a potentially solid little endless runner being dragged down a lot by a few issues. First, the controls are way too sensitive. If the player's movement works in lanes, I think the best way to control it would be such that a single tap left or right moves a single lane. No more, no less. As it is moving one lane over is tricky when it feels like it really shouldn't be. The second problem is the screen-clearing mechanic. Once the buildings turn green once, you can completely avoid all obstacles by just mashing the space bar and collecting batteries, which is much too easy. The game becomes trivial when all the obstacles are gone.

Those problems really heavily pull the game down, but everything else is really nice. The graphics are appealing and the music fits well enough. I would encourage you to fix those issues I mentioned above and see how it plays, because I think it's be a lot of fun.

Solid entry, but I did feel that the keyboard controls were a little sensitive.
