ROGUEMATCH by Tom Panton

[raw]
made by Tom Panton for LD 41 (COMPO)

I never thought I'd make a game that crosses roguelike and match-three, but here we are. ROGUEMATCH is a game about manipulating your enemies to have them form a straight line of three or more, which is the only way to defeat them.

Controls

  • W, A, S and D to move
  • Arrow keys to attack
  • Tab to view a single enemy's intentions
  • Space to interact

Post-jam version

I made a post-jam version that fixes an annoying game freeze that can occasionally happen when enemies spawn other enemies, which was kindly pointed out to me by @TheGreenMan.
Download it here (it should work on Windows, OSX and Linux, provided that you have Java installed)

Very interesting concept! I really enjoyed knowing the enemies intentions and how I had to use that for my strategy.

Wow. One of the best ones I've played so far. I loved the concept, it was fun to play, the graphics were great, and the sound effects were cool. There's only one thing I didn't like. I found it difficult to come up with a plan to get three in a row because they moved so much and you have so few moves. I found that it was luck that allowed me to clear rooms more than thinking. However, I might just be bad at it XD. Also, music always helps so next time you should try to make a simple loop of some sort. Great job!

Honestly this game deserves some attention. The mechanics are very original and fun and they lead to some very interesting puzzle situations that make you feel very smart. This is the best take on the theme I've seen so far, as it properly matches mechanics from two very imcompatible genres to make something truly unique. I had a lot of fun playing it!

On a more negative note, the game crashed on me when I beat the 4 mage-like enemies, when they turned into skeletons, the game just crashed during the skeletons' first turn.

Still a GREAT LD entry tho!

Oh no, so sorry that the game crashed on you @TheGreenMan ! My code for spawning new enemies is very sloppy XD

This was a very interesting game, even for a match three which I usually dont like. I can see that this game has some potential so you should keep working on it. Great job.

Wow, that has to be the most interesting game this jam for mechanics, who would've thought rogue like and connect 3 would be so good. My only negatives were the graphical style and the lack of animations, but honestly, with such amazing diversity in enemies, it's understandable you went for a slightly simpler style.

Great work  My game only needs 0.125 of a vote, so if you could give it a play and a rating, that would be most welcome (it's very short).
