Archetype - Running Out of Power by cakemonitor

[raw]
made by cakemonitor for LD 39 (COMPO)

Archetype is a co-op puzzle that can also be played solo

Two robots must work together to complete levels
They can only move when they are connected to a power source

left mouse or left gamepad shoulder - Collect lightning arc
right mouse or right gamepad shoulder - Emit lightning arc

power sources are copper coloured, power receivers are blue

For solo play... tab or gamepad start - Toggle the controlled robot

WASD + mouse, or twin stick control
Space / click left stick to jump

Esc to quit
M to toggle music, Shift-M to mute all sound
R to restart the level in case you get stuck

Unfortunately, I didn't get time to replace the place-holder graphics.
Music is by autotracker.py, SFX are recorded & edited by me.

Tools used include: * Unity * ProBuilder * Krita * Audacity * autotracker.py

Really great concept! I'm real impressed that you managed to get co-op going given the time allotted, great job! That electricity effect is super cool too.

I enjoyed it, just too bad I didn't have a friend to play with :)
Impressive how much you managed to fit in 48 hours! Well done!

Nice to see a co-op game done, and one that doesn't shirk solo play :D

Got the hang of it quickly, though the hitboxes for targeting your friend seem off. It was initially natural for me to be aiming for the partners hands, but they didn't seem to register as clickable.

Also, I got stuck on the stairs in the first level and couldn't recover, despite being able to see the partner character.

Love the coop, but it's a bit difficult to control on the gamepad.

Id love to see this expanded out into a full game

Keyboard controls don't work in Webgl or Windows. :( Tab works but WASD doesn't.

@gwinnell Did you try clicking on the copper sphere? The characters are not allowed to move unless they are connected to a power source, so WASD would be deliberately disabled until you supply power to that robot.

Couldn't move in webgl, almost gave up but then saw your comment above and then I could move (I had successfully activated the copper sphere before but then tried to use the the game pad instead of WASD). Played solo but the fun is probably in coop. Interesting mechanic. Nice audio.

Great fun to play with my brother--keybinds were a little incorrect at first for the DS4, but it was an interesting (and pretty unique!) concept. Loved the sunglasses guy. Didn't love the autotracker music...

I liked it andI think it has potential, if you're willing to build more levels in the future! Good job! :)

the gameplay is really good, detections are a little bit weird some times, but i seriously liked the idea overall, great job!

Interesting idea for a game. I played solo but I imagine it's more fun on co-op. The puzzles are interesting and I liked the music too.

The characters seemed to get stuck occasionally even though they had line of sight of a power source. I sometimes would have to push them with the other character to get them unstuck.

I couldn't get past the second level when the drawbridge lowered. I couldn't see a way to get onto it as the characters don't jump high enough and the bridge doesn't come down all the way. I probably missed something obvious though.

It is a fun game, and I like how you've made it work for solo players as well. Good job!

@mcjammydodger - if you cut the power to the drawbridge mechanism too soon then it will stop moving but if you reconnect the power then it will come all the way down. However, you were one corner of a room away from completing the game so you pretty much saw everything :)

Puzzle game, yay! Reminded me a bit of *The Talos Principle* for some reason (maybe the bits where you have to work together with a record of your past self?). There's even more than one level  Pretty good interpretation of the theme and making that work as a concept as well, I think.

Controlling it on your lonesome can become a bit tedious though, but I completely forgive it that, since it's really meant to be 2-player (and I think it would be a lot of fun with 2 players).

The sound-fx where a little harsh on my earphones though, at least compared to the music.

Nice puzzle game. The idea is very interesting, keep developing it to explore the space of the puzzles that can be built with that mechanics. Great work!

Really unique idea! Loved the co-op and would be interested to see what other puzzles could be developed from this mechanic. Nice job!

I like it - I played solo, but I imagine it really shines in co-op.

I played solo, but this game was still really cool. I actually liked the graphics, even if they were placeholder graphics. It would be hard to wrangle people for this, but this would be a really fun 4 player splitscreen affair. Great job!

A cleaver coop puzzle game matching the LD39 theme : running out of power. Unfortunately I do not have the opportunity to test it with a second person but controlling both robot was fine too. If there is a post-jam version I would suggest better graphics.

Original game!
I didn't mind the graphics, as the gameplay was pretty good.
Beside, the robots looked cool with their sunglasses. :sunglasses:
Nice little song on the background and effective sounds.
I'm glad I played this game!

Nice!

I played alone, so it was kind of annoying to switch between the characters, but the concept is cool!

It was a bit difficult to control the characters because I have an AZERTY keyboard, and since I'm lefthanded my mouse buttons are inverted so they didn't correspond to the characters arms.

But anyway, great job! It has the potential to be a fun co-op game.

Wow, what an awesome idea! Played it cooperatively and it was just a whole lot of fun. The only minor disturbance was that it felt a little a little buggy to connect to the other player, sometimes I could not understand why the connection was lost or not established. Overall though, we enjoyed this a whole lot and could very well see the idea extended (hehe) further. Great game overall!
