The Game

Micro Trooper is tiny action platformer inspired by classics like Super Crate Box and Downwell. Your goal is to kill as many mini bosses as possible. Each miniboss will spawn when you pickup the crystal. More crystals you have, tougher the boss will be.

Backstage

This time I started to work on a puzzle platformer, but after several hours I realized that the idea is bad. So I deleted everything except 2D character controller and switched the genre to action platformer.

Controls

Z - jump, X - fire, Arrows - movement

Software

  • Unity 2017.2
  • Photoshop
  • BFXR
  • Logic Pro
  • Audacity

Post-Compo version

Don't vote based on this build! I've changed and added few things which I couldn't do during the 48 hours.

  • holding fire button fires continuously
  • tweaked sounds
  • tweaked music
  • enemies look a little bit different
  • more particles
  • more effects
  • better enemy spawning AI

Nice polish and graphics, and you even have gun recoil keeping you on your toes. Gameplay becomes a little stale after a while as the boss remains the same, although admittedly I haven't made it very far.

The shooting feels so good. The controls are flawless, I'd play this game for hours if I could use a controller.
The only thing that I didn't like is that you can't jump up through the platforms.

Its a really solid action platformer implementation, The graphics and audio are everything that is necessary. Its kind of odd to rank as a compo entry because it does a really good job of what its doing, but that genre is so well developed that it draws a lot of comparisons to way more polished games.

On the whole its a really nice game that i'm impressed you made in a weekend.

Very solid and well-polished platform shooter. I can definitely see where the inspirations of both Super Crate Box and Downwell are found. It would be nice if you could jump through some platforms but that's where part of the difficulty lies.

This is great! One of my favorite submissions by far!
Feels a lot like Downwell. Yes, the variation is small, but its like the original Super Mario, its got a ton of charm in what little content there is.

The game also feels very polished, smart choice going for the simple graphics, as the consistent artstyle ties it all together. Not to mention the PUMPING soundtrack. Great job!

Nice game, I see why you said that mine is similar.
I love feel of shooting.
Also one suggestion. Plese try not to use Z for controls, because lots of us don't use English keyboard, and often Z is switched with Y, so game is kind a hard to play.

Very good all around game, visuals, gameplay, sound. It did feel a lot like the games you mentioned, but that's not a bad thing.

Love the 1-bit graphics and the overall feeling of the game. Looks very polished and it's very fun to play. I would love some other behaviours to enemies to make it more challenging, a possible add for the future? :)

Cool. :) The music and graphics fit together well. The overall game feeling is good with only one tiny thing I found a little bit disturbing -> jumping with Z/Y. It would be more natural to jump with UpArrow for me so I would be able to focus my left hand only to shooting.

@kerzak good idea! Will add it there :)

Pretty cool! The controls feel really tight, I like the little bit of knockback from firing the gun so you can't just stand still and spam fire. I found it difficult to predict where enemies will move up or down, most of my deaths were because of that. In Super Crate Box for example an enemy always falls down at the first gap they encounter, so it's very predictable.

Looks and plays great. I played hours of Super Crate Box and this is amazing. Would love to see more variation, but great job anyway.

This game has some fantastic polish, even with how simple it is. The animations were so smooth, and the general feel of controlling the character and shooting things was awesome. Congratulations on a solid entry!

This so fun. There is this feeling that makes me believe that I can do better so I keep retrying only to lose after 2 bosses every time :D
The art looks great even with 2 colors only and the music is very energetic.

Simple graphics, but they are very charming. (I really like the jump animation.) This isn't the most innovative game, but it's quite fun to play!

Really like this game, great music and sound effects, and graphics are great(I think you are a big fan of Downwell:)),control is very smooth, that fells good.I just can't use to use my right hand to control movement, maybe you can add a left hand control mode?

Simple, beautiful and challenging. Congratulations on the design, and I really liked the aesthetics of the game. The soundtrack helps a lot in the feeling.

Simples, bonito e desafiador. Parabéns pelo design, e gostei muito da estética do jogo. A trilha sonoro ajuda muito no feeling.

Solid gameplay and responsible controls. Kill 5 bosses and can't feel progress. I think, this game needs some new gameplay elements.

Nice! Screen shake always works :) love that. But my finger hurts, may be fire 3 bullets per press? I do suck in platformers, auto-fire would make this more enjoyable for me. But otherwise, pretty neat!

Pretty damn solid game. The map reminds me of those old one-room Mario games with the enemies making their way down
Visuals and audio go so well together, love the bit style to it
My only issue is when you jump then shoot the bullet goes in a diagonal, seems a little unintuitive to me but it could just be something I need to get used to
All in all I quite enjoyed it!

Very nicely put together! As others have said the small polish touches go a long way. Would love to see more variety in some combination of the enemies, player abilities, and environment, just to keep things a bit more from feeling a bit same-ey, but what's there now is definitely great (with great improvements in the post-compo version)!

I really like how smooth the gameplay is! Art, sound and all fit the overall mood very well. And these "Smoking crystals" :D

I kinda felt that going through the left side would put me on the right side, that would have been nice, just like TowerFall does it :)

Btw we wanted to make action-platformer and ended up doing puzzle one :D

I really love the knock back effect when you shoot. I also like it how the ghosts just get so much faster and more annoying when they loop back. Really good audio. The black and white theme is good for your ghost theme. The game fits the theme quite well. The only thing I would suggest is to add a new feature because the game kinda gets boring over time. But it is still addictive though. Definitely had fun playing this game.

1-bit color and, still, nothing is missing on aesthetics side. Music in style of 8-bit computers such as C64 or ZX-128 (AY...) reminds me of my childhood. This is pretty polished game and I will hardly forget it! Excellent work.

As pretty much everyone has mentioned, this is a really solid entry, but I think that it could have used a bit more tie in with the theme. Went for a pretty standard approach and that makes it really flexible for whatever future you might have planned for it. I'm a big fang of Super Crate Box and Downwell, but it's BECAUSE of that that I wish you went a bit further in creating your own identity here. Your game-feel is top notch, so keep it up!

Digging this 1-bit art style! It wasn't particularly deep in terms of gameplay, but it's still a solid entry.

It's interesting how differently the compo and post-jam versions feel due to the firing modes. The latter is definitely easier on the wrist, but I may actually prefer the former due to the strategies available: in the post-jam version, I found myself getting further mostly just be standing on one level and defending, which ended up being more boring.

The diagonal shots during jumps and being able to jump at any point after walking off a platform were both nice touches.

Very solid and satisfying action, this game feels incredibly polished, and looks and sounds great. The gameplay is not incredibly compelling, but it is impressive that you were able to pull it off after abandoning an earlier idea, and it is still fun.

I had so much fun playing this! I will add my voice to the crowd of praise on how awesome this game feels. The sound is spot on. Great job! The movements of the smaller enemies were a little hard to figure out, but at least it kept me on my toes.

Never made it that far to become bored of the same boss style. Imho with this number of smaller enemies running about it would be tedious to have different bosses with complicated ways of disposing them, so in a way I think I like that you kept them simple.
