Space Honey: The adventure of Little-Bee 🐝 by thiagowaw

[raw]
made by thiagowaw for LD 38 (COMPO)

At first I was (as always) with problems with the chosen theme. (Not knowing how to get out of the cliche).

I really enjoyed doing this game because i get out for my comfort zone. I’ve never done a graviade system like this, and usually my games are full of screen shake, and dash killing something.

I would also like to thank my girlfriend for helping me with the idea of the game, and for the sake of comprehension, because I used a weekend that I would spend with her to spend in front of my computer. :p

I do not understand how the game will be played, but if you want, you can go play and comment. If anything comes later for the vote, I ask you to also vote.

HOW TO PLAY: 🍯

The game was very casual (for now), all you have to do is go to the planets, pick up the nectar from the flowers, and deliver to your hive. Among the planets, some bees that steal honey are flying from one side to another, you need to divert them so you do not lose the honey you are carrying.

Later, in a pos jam version, I will implement some things to attack other bees.

* AUDIO *: Unfortunately I could not produce any music in time. I'll post a post-jam version later.

* Controls * 🎮

SPACE = UP

CTRL = DOWN

D = RIGHT

A = LEFT

Note: I made the terrible decision not to keep the standard wasd, But it's too late now =/

You are a space bee, and you must reap nectar from the plants and carry up to your honeycomb.

But huge wasps that steal honey, fly near the planets. Better to get away from them, otherwise your hive would die of hunger!

NOTE: It's just this? I hope you posted it the right way. I'm very confused with this new site.

Nice idea! It's a pity that the controls are confusing, but I enjoyed anyway. If you try to put some sounds, it will be perfect. Nice job :)

I think that this is a really nice idea and very well implemented. About the controllers, I believe you could modify that now and would still be under the rules of the jam, it's only mapping controllers to more comfortable keys so you should do it. I like graphics and animations a lot, the only advice I have here is that you put a lot of efforts on the planet and the bee, from the player experience point of view in my opinion knowing exactly where the honeycomb is and giving feedback that you are actually moving in space is important. In general is very good game.

It is a neat idea alright. The execution? We'll get to that in a bit.

So I start gathering honey and think that there's a beehive on the planet to dump it on. Nope, "Gameover", there's a massive one in space apparently. Take two, I get a haul into space and to the hive. Great! Let's do it again. What was that! A massive wasp just swiped all the honey from nowhere! Wut? Third time, the same hyper fast bugger did it again...

And that really is the only challenge here, trying to react to those non-telegraphed insta-sap attacks. Not a fan of that.

The graphics are pleasant and the controls not that bad, taken that downward movement is hardly needed at all. You should work on the challenge part, preferably a fair challenge at that.

Time to leg it... :runner: :bee: :bee: :bee:

I liked the graphics and the idea, but I have similar concerns like @fiery-squirrel. The effort you have to go through to get to the honeycomb is a bit too much. Maybe bring the hive closer and make the journey there a bit more quick (maybe the bee can descend and ascend faster?). Also, maybe you shouldn't lose all your honey if the enemy hits you.

Hey mate! I like the idea and the game in general, art is awesome and control feeling is fluent. There are some things that I would change such as losing all the honey when being hit. Furthermore I would add a pause menu and a little tutorial at the very beginning of the game(not everyone is gonna read web tutorial).

Good work overall!

Professional pixel art and and
very interesting idea. But that damn wasp stole my honey every time :sob: The controls were good and after I found out that I'm dying if I'm not returning to the honeycomb I had a lot of fun. The art is pretty amazing, especially the planets.

Great job thiagowaw! :grin:

Hey man, very nice game. Loved the graphics, but there were a couple things I wasn't too keen on. First off being the controls. Won't go into it too much because you have yourself. Second, I had a very hard time even finding the beehive. Couldn't really figure out where I was to go until I finally died. Other than those two things, I feel that this is an amazing game with so much more that can be done to it. Can't wait to see what you do with it!

Graphics look beautiful. It was hard to find the hive!

Man, I wish you'd had more time for polish.

I followed your game from your initial sketches and thought it was a very neat concept. Ultimately, I think the game would have benefited a lot from some way to zoom out to see the different planets, like in your sketches. The hive was a bit hard to find and the by minimizing the travel time between planets and hive, I think the game could be much more enjoyable.

I was very impressed by the pixel art. Seeing the hive for the first time was a really nice experience, which would have been perfect if you added some epic music on approach.

Finally, I wouldn't personally worry about changing the keys at this point. There is a certain leeway given about what constitutes a bug and what is the unallowed addition of features. Since the choice of keys significantly impacts the gameplay and it's really just a very minor change, I would assume that changing the keys should be no problem at this point. Maybe you can just add the W and S keys to the existing keys so it would be even less of a change.

All in all I think the game has a lot of potential. I would be interested in what you can do post-jam.

Really neat idea. There's only so much you can do with controls in such an environment but you adapted it fairly nicely!

Great game! I love the graphics, you've made a great job with this. My Only suggestion is give a feedback when an enemy is coming. I've had a lot of fun exploring the universe (the bee is a little bit slow, but ok). And I've liked the particles to show you if you're near something in the universe.

Good job!

I agree with other commenters that the gameplay needs some work. But, I want to compliment the graphics -- there were a lot of small details that really stood out (good flying animation, grass deforms when bee lands on it, particle effects, glowing planetoid, atmosphere glow, etc) which made the environment feel alive and engaging. Good job on those!

Very nice game and very nice art! The concept is cool, but it seemed to be a bit too hard. If you had a minimap showing where to place the honey it would make it less random, I think. Having a bit more time can be an alternative to this. The controls were a bit confusing, but I got used to it quite easily. Overall good game and very nicely done with the gravity.

When I saw the GIF, I thought, I should try that, it looks a bit similar to our game, but it was quite different! :) I liked the dancing yellow blobs around the beehive, but I had trouble finding it. Since the background was static, I had no sense of direction. Perhaps you could add some pointers on screen as where to find planets and the beehive, or a minimap. It was nice to pick up the honey from the flowers and liked finding new planets, but the big bees were way to fast and big to avoid. I liked the graphics as well, only when I lost, the graphics did some funny things (the pictures left a trail around the edges of the screen).
But overall, well done! :)

I love the graphics, I like the "grass physics" :) But the controls were a bit rough. Also, I didn't manage to find another planet. It looks very nice though :)

It took a bit for me to realize what I was doing wrong, but that didn't make the game any easier. I tried delivering the honey back to the comb, but a majority of the time I'd get hit by a wasp and lose it all. Also, a ui element to show where to go next seems to be a necessity(I say this because my game lacks it as well). Did I miss something or is there no audio?

Other than those complaints that I have made, I REALLY enjoyed what I played. I thought the graphics were amazing. And I guess I'm the only person who didn't have a problem with the controls. :(
