Absolutely adorable and charming game, I would love to play this as a complete game

Great game! I'm digging the visuals! It's definitely a game I would play again! Awesome combination of genres!
There are two things I have noticed:

In the first tutorial, the part where it teaches you that you can press *down* to be able to run again is placed a bit far back in my opinion. At first I didn't realize that I could do that and my character flew out of the screen and died
Also, once my character got stuck in between the wrench and a wall. Fortunately I didn't die when I moved the wrench.

Good job, you made both genres work without it feeling too awkward, transition between genres is smooth. Presentation is pretty good too, the graphics in general makes me think this could be a gba or nds game which I like.

Nice entry, Wow. So original with the arkanoid system. Music is good but when you keep passing levels is a bit repetitive. Graphics work very well, they're so cute. Good job!

I found a bug in this level, when you have to move the base to get a box, so you can jump to complete it: It didn't allowed me to jump anymore. Here's the screenshot:

Wow, terrific work! Amazing visuals, fun sound effects, and what a cool concept. Nice! I apparently suck at the game, because I kept failing over and over (and like @woergbi above I died a bunch before knowing that the down arrow made you stop being in Ball form, ha ha). Anyway, wonderful job and kudos for doing so much in just three short days! Excellent.

The audio and visuals were solid, and the combination of platforming utilizing breakout mechanics to further augment level traversal worked really well. I liked how you gave more control over the paddle and ball rather than just feeling like it's going to bounce around randomly. Great work!

Genres: puzzle + platformer + block buster!
The gameplay, the sfx. the music choice, the moving control, the level design, the help menu, the theme!
All well done!
10/10
GOod job guys!

I have a suggestion, prevent the ball from leaving the "view", when it is bouncing (similar to old Mario game), would make it
even better!

This is awesome, amazing job, the combination is soo soo damn cool, and the graphics, and the sound, everything fits perfectly, my only gripe is that the paddle movement is too slippery and dosn't feel quite right, but other than that amazing job.

Love the idea, it was clever and executed very well, only complaint is that it felt very slow. Paddle movement was slow, ball speed was slow, walking speed was slow, I think the entire game could benefit from like a 25% speed increase. The art is good and it felt very polished for a jam game.

I would never say this 2 types of games would work out well ... but they do! And the execution is perfect! Graphics were on point and the puzzles were very challenging (only completed the first 5 yet but I plan to do them all :P)
Great job!

Thanks everyone!

@strato If you're playing it in your browser try the Windows build, the game might be lagging on your end. Also, there's a hard mode that speeds up the ball so you might wanna check that out as well.

I've never been great at platformers, so I didn't get too far, but if I had the time I could see myself playing this for hours. It's delightfully challenging, fun, and the visuals are great. Would have liked to know pressing down gets you out of breakout mode earlier, but that's a small criticism of this seamless blend of two genres.

@CosmicGem Oh, sorry. English isn't my first language. I mean It's kinda slow, as if the PC is struggling to run it. Though it might just be my crappy computer giving up the ghost at this point

Man what a great game, I saw this game come by on Lumpy's stream and I absolutely had to play it myself!

I absolutely adore the art style and music, the controls are tight and the game mechanics themselves are simple but the resulting gameplay has quite some depth. This all leads to a great game that I would love to see you all explore and create for further!

If you can figure out a way to nail mobile controls this could be a great game for on iOS and Android tablets!

Awesomely done!

I could like this game more if it was more polished...
Toooooo boring wait every level restart with such rate of fails.

Concept good, platformer with breakout rules. Game mechanic very solid and interesing. Level desing well made (despite I see only four levels at all). Nive job, anyway! I hope you'll polish it and I will have 100% of fun!

This game is awesome. The concept is very good, and the mix between the two genres fit very well. The graphics are very nice, just what this type of game demands, the levels are very well designed and the controls feels good for the platformer part and the bricks-paddle part too. Very good, congrats.

I’m not sure if you were able to see it, but I played your game on my stream at https://www.twitch.tv/saoigames tonight.

This game looks and plays so well, it's hard to believe that it's a Ludum Dare game. Great job!

The only issue I had with it were the controls, I was frequently pressing z when I should have been pressing down, and vice versa.

A fantastic game. Great retro music and graphics. The mashup is done tastefully. It's fun to play and overcome challenges and play with extents of the mechanics. I found a speedrun strat somehow by pressing down in breakout mode and passing through walls to the right, used it to get past one of the breakout sections.

Great graphics and polish! I liked how the music changed when you're in breakout mode. The game is really tough as nails though! It would've been nicer if the restart was faster because it got quite frustrating after a while.

This is a top-notch game in terms of art and music and the concepts fits the theme very well. My biggest criticism is the difficult and having to restart the whole level all the time, which gets really annoying quickly.

Woaw, I'm impressed by such an original and polished game!
It looks like an actual SNES game, congrats!

The genre mashup works very well, and the level design is superb (so are the graphics and music, but that was obvious from the screenshots ;)).

What tool / framework did you use to code it? Pure Javascript?

Really adorable entry! It's a relatively simple idea, but the execution is great and you've got an impressive amount of content too! The checkpointing does leave a little to be desired though; some of the later levels are actually pretty difficult and having to restart the entire level gets a bit tedious.

A couple other minor criticisms:
- The in-game tutorial showing you how to switch back to platformer-mode is a bit poorly placed: The area which first has you switch to the paddle mode can easily end up killing you, and you have to actively look ahead to find out how to get out of it.
- On the "give me a hand" level, it's possible to get stuck in the area where you have to break the floor (you can break some, then switch to platforming, and you won't be able to jump out)

Overall, this is solid game!

I could repeat what I said about last LD's Shifting Dreamscape (and right from the start I knew it was from the same devs - your sense of style is outstanding!):

It's one of the games where you completely forget it was made for Ludum Dare! Everything just fits perfectly. Insanely good graphics, insanely good audio, incredible level design. Really, I can give you nothing but praise. Have a bunch of fishes <3 🐟🐟🐟

it took me a wile to figure out that I can stop bounceing with pressing the arrow-key down (always too lazy to read the controls description)

This game feels really polished. The idea is also pretty awesome just like the graphics and music. Love the artstyle. The only thing I could say is that it is a bit hard, but that doesn't have to be a bad thing. Awesome work! :)

I wasn't expecting this many positive replies! Thanks guys! I wish I didn't leave the tutorial signs to the last minute though, that seems to be the only major mistake I made.

@drludos: Nah, it's just GameMaker: Studio 1.4

@beebo-studios: Whoa! I wasn't expecting someone to make the connection, even tho I _did_ recycle the same menu layout and made a reference to it in the intro. :P Oh and for the last game I actually teamed up with someone else. But yeah thanks for the fishies lol

It was really fun to play your game! What is very nice, are the small notice boards which function as tutorial. The music is a bit too repetitive but otherwise I liked everything very much. Keep up the good work!!

I'd appreciate it if you'd find time to play my game.

I thought the idea sounded janky, but I love break out games so I thought I'd give it a try regardless. I was pleasantly surprised and glad to have tried it. The browser version was super slow on my computer though, no idea why. Anyway, this was super fun and the graphics and sound complemented each other and the game play really well

Congratulations for the game! One of the best I've played. Pixel Art wonderful and the combination was very perfect.

I left my rating of your game, if you can leave your feedback in our game, Witch's Escape.

I hope you continue with the project.
