EARTH BLOSSOM by Zarkonnen

[raw]
made by Zarkonnen for LD 40 (COMPO)

WELCOME, CHILD

YOUR BLOSSOMING AWAITS YOU

Your monstrous avatar glibbers through space, following your cursor. You can spawn blisters that fire spores at the human structures trying to impede your progress. Once they are destroyed, you can devour the survivors, replenishing your mass - but don’t be too greedy, or your flesh will become sluggish, or even blossom early, too far away from Earth.

Such a simple to pick and fun to play game! With a neat innovative approach to the theme. The audio and graphics are simple but with a few visual tricks it serves it purpose really well, very good job! The controls could be a bit janky at times though.

Wow. I didn't make my critique but rated on this when I played it? Whoops! I played it again so I could make this right. (and speedrun it cause I know what I was doing. It was fun.)

* To be honest, it's almost fine the way it is really, it's real good. I mean, everything could look better with a bit more polish and stylistic improvements but I am fascinated you took this really unique approach to the theme.
* Without the theme's constraints, I think it's best if you have the ability to zoom out one way or another. Either by using some dedicated zoom buttons or as you grow in size. There's also another way to go about this visibility problem, which I'll state below.
* Enemy Indicators. On the stage "Fleet", I moved far away enough to lose track of the large ship. Arrows pointing to it is a good way to tell where the enemies are. It could be the nearest enemy, the one with the most threat, or all of them.
* Suggestion: Use mass to boost? Heck yeah! More risk than reward. Then again, it might end up too similar to slither.io...

To be honest, I can't really say much cause it's a good game, really. Congratulations on your entry! I hope this game blossoms. ;)

The sound effects combined with the movement of the great blobbo..

The theme fit is great since there's a definite advantage to keeping your size down, the creepy music is great for the mood!

Not much to criticize, I agree with @fiakaiera that the main thing I also thought about was that of zoom (also enemy indicators!)

Great work :)

Controls and theme are definitely interesting ! Kind of frustrating to die if you eat too much tho, even more since the bar isn't that readable.

Very nice game, I specially enjoyed the ambiance and atmosphere, Moving around is fun per se, which is a very complicated thing to achieve. Gets hard pretty quick though! Congrats on this one :)

I really enjoyed this one! The difficulty is spot on and the music and sound effects work really well. But the blossom mechanic was never really a threat after it was first introduced.

Nice entry ! Reminds me a bit of slither.io with the ability to shoot. It could be a concept for a multiplier game. Good job ! ;)

Fun game. It took me forever to find the humans though. A HUD arrow pointing to them would be helpful.

Super creative concept, and I love the control scheme! Nice application of the theme as well, the timing aspect is definitely interesting. Also, from the description, I didn't realize there were multiple levels, but thought it all took place in one big level.

Really wonderful concept, great game. I included it in my Ludum Dare 40 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look. :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nsp8m-rrtCY
