Infected Pong by PhillSerrazina

[raw]
made by PhillSerrazina for LD 40 (COMPO)

Welcome to my first Ludum Dare submission! It's obviously not perfect and just maybe I'll continue to work on it in the future, but I'm proud of the final result and a huge thank you to my girlfriend, Amanda, who came up with the concept!

For those of you who are interested in the Source Code, it does not have any comments just yet, so it might be a bit confusing. If you wait a day or two, I'll upload a new version to Github with comments soon!

Quick Note: For some reason, the game starts with disabled sound, just click the little sound icon to enable it!

its simple yet really fun and challenging. Who knew getting rid of popups could be so fun.

Fun concept. The dual nature of the game makes it pretty challenge. Also: screw popups!

Interesting idea! It feels like the popups come up too fast to really do anything about them. It was fun to try to manage both the popups and the pong game, it could be great with some tweaking!

Simple idea, very well done, although it feels like it gets too hard, too fast.

Neat concept! ...but of course I would think so.
I hope _my_ 'version' of Pong didn't give you any popups
_(Context for that statement: @phillserrazina reviewed my game, I'm here to return the favor it now seems our games, while very different on some level, have quite a few things in common as well.)_

It's just _slightly_ confusing that Pong-points are different than regular points.
I get that you want more fine grained control over points than just score-by-opponent-miss, but I still think you could merge the two.

A sound-effect when you're not capable of buying the selected thing, and/or the Pong-score embedded in the shop-window would help as well I think.

Using the mouse & keyboard for something semi-unrelated like this played quite well, but I found that I'd often get game-overed before I could really use the anti-virus.
Maybe having 'three strikes and you're out' (or something) instead of 'miss even once is out' would help with that? Or maybe I'm just too tired from the weekend r.n.

Wooop 119 points!
I really like the idea, although I had a hard time multitasking it was pretty fun. Artwork is nice and funny. Good job on your first entry!

Thank you everyone for the nice comments!

@remco , Your version of pong gave me mild anxiety ahah!

Yes, originally it was just one score, even RAM, so you had to manage very well what you did because you ran out of ram it was game over. But that proved to be just too difficult, then I tried just the pong score but I wanted to give the player a feeling of "the more time I survive, the better I do!" and that's where the timer-ish point system came from. But I'll definitely take that into account!

I don't even know how I did not think of adding some sort of "You don't have enough points" thing in the anti-virus ahah...

And I see a lot of people struggling with the difficulty so I'll definitely implement the "3 strikes you're out" thing.

Again, thank you everyone for the feedback!

This take on the idea ended up with a pretty neat gameplay loop ( '3'), though there'd be times where I thought I had clicked the "X" button on a pop-up, but it wouldn't close. I wonder if that might just be Unity'd button/UI system sometimes acting up.

@mrthee Thank you! And that was an actual game feature ahah, pop ups took 1 click to go away, adds took 2 and virus took 3!

Really liked the idea, using the keyboard and the mouse at the same time to acomplish different things was refreshing.

Also the graphics are awesome XD

Very clever idea for sure, but I think it did get way too hard way too fast. Might be because I played it on a laptop without a mouse, so closing windows was harder.

Gotta hate those pop-up ads!Very innovative idea. It's a little hard though...but I think that's what make this game stands out.

Hahahahaa. I had a pong game too. Similar in a lot of ways, actually, you should check it out.

I think yours has a better grasp on the aesthetic though, and I like how it evolves. Nice work.

I wonder what sites has the main protagonist of this game visited... and I think those are the smallest pong paddles I've seen in a while :D

Solid experience, but sadly it's all boils down to just plain ol' boring pong. I think you could've added couple more different ad images, since there are so many infamous ads that you could've satired.

The music reminded me of early 90's PC games, which made me feel all tingly for some reason.

good job on the game d:

Nice idea and execution, albeit slightly too unforgiving. Playing this with a laptop's touchpad was clearly too much for me, but I will definitely give it another try with a trusty mouse.

Great idea! It was pretty frustrating, just like it would be in reality. I hit an issue where sometimes the windows wouldn't close until I clicked a few times, not sure why that would happen or if it was by design. Good entry!

I like the concept of this game, and it was executed well. Its a really good game for a first submission, and it profitted from its simplicty. I like it! :)

The popups are soooo annoying! So infuriating!

Funny game. Played many times. Once, I lost the ball half way through while it was moving very slowly after bouncing off a paddle. Game continued without the ball. :(

I hated it, 5/5.

I mean, there's not much more to say. The more popups in my screen, the more upset I get. You did execute the idea of the theme pretty well.

I found ya, Windows XP's default wallpaper! =D

Interesting concept! Very nice visual design, music fits it in its simplicity making the image of this game.

As for suggestions, there are a few. I would like to have some more lifes for my pong paddle. Also, on an update screen it would be good to see my current score.

Thanks for a fun game!

Very addictive game, with an awesome idea! The graphics are funny (WaterFox, nice one!) and the sounds fill well.

Took me a while to understand that the points spent aren't the left or right ones, but the center ones. Also, took me a while to notice that I need to click several times in some popups.

I agree about putting lives on this game. Also, it's annoying that the player can't see his pong points on shop screen. Anyway, I disagree about the game was too hard, but is a little luck based, since some popups that show in strategic places sometimes mess with the game. Also, this Infected Pong works well as two player cooperative game.

Small mistake: You say, in this page and in your game, that "A" key move the bar, but actually is the "S" keys.

My record was 319.

A very funny and enjoyable game. It controls decently well, there's a sense of difficulty curve, and the exact mechanics make the player wanna rush forwards and try as quickly as possible to score points. It's a pretty solid idea and it's executed rather well! My only real gripe is that the music starts getting a bit meh after a while, but other than that, nicely done!

Wish I could have made it to the upgrades! However closing these popups is pretty darn hard with a trackpad =P
