Edge Runner by Johnny Turbo

[raw]
made by Johnny Turbo for LD 42 (COMPO)

"Power walk to the edge of the universe"

For LD42 I decided to take a literal approach to the theme. In "Edge Runner" you literraly need to run out of space. No like you need to run to the edge of the universe and actually physically run out of space. You get it.

Anyways, I am super proud with the result of my game this time around. I tried to make a game mechanic as simple as I could and have it fully complete with art, audio, and gameplay. While I wasn't able to get any art put into the game, I feel that the rest of the product is as complete as I would have hoped.

The only thing that didn't work out at the last minute was a short video that is supposed to play at the end. I guess Unity WebGL has some incompatibilities with it. So, if you want the full experience, feel free to download the executable of the game. Fortunately the video isn't that important to the overall game and the gimmick at the end still works without it. Enjoy!

This is a kind of universe and feeling i had in my mind for this jam but i made it something different.

I really like this crazy universe, graphics are very funny. I'd love to have music with it.

Gameplay itself is very fun. I managed to finish first level but the second one is too speed :D.

Really great job and inspiring game.

@eric-kulbiej Thanks for the positive feedback! Glad you enjoyed it!

@kromeboy I appreciate it! Wanted to do something that might be a bit out of the ordinary :P

@mgsx Thanks I'm really happy with how the universe turned out!! Music/sound effects/voice over are the top things that I really wanted to get into my game this time around but just ran out of time to get them in. I definitely do like the feel of the game and yes, the second part is pretty difficult :P

This is great! The line movement was incredibly satisfying, and the highlight of the game for me. The invisibility mode was amazing, and kind of made me wish that the entire game was faster. Maybe the planets could move at the same speed, but I think the game would feel a lot better if the base background speed was faster (+ then you could make the invincible mode go at HYPERSPEED!). The menu screen seemed extremely convoluted with text. I'd recommend making some different buttons to go to different parts of the menu, like one to go to your YouTube channel, ect. There were some dialogue typos, but that's no big deal. The line about space expanding was hilarious! Great job!

@adonisdevs Thanks for the positive feedback! I'm glad you liked the line movement as I spent a lot of time on that to make it feel right. I do hope to make a mobile port of this game soon so I appreciate the gameplay suggestions. Also I kinda rushed making the main menu at the last minute so that is why it is that way, better than nothing though!

I love your idea for this game, really original. I think you could make player smaller and you have to work on your drawings, cause it looks amateur for now, but otherwise you made very good and fun game! Keep it up!

@folex70 Thank you! I thought that this would be a funny take on the theme too!

@borys Thanks for the feedback! I agree the player is a bit too tall and it can be tough to get through some tight sections. If you couldn't tell, I'm much more of a programmer than an artist and didn't spend too much time on the art; so the cheap cartoony art style is what I went with!! :)

@vivoubos Thank you, I tried to do something that I thought would be a bit different haha! Yes, the second half of the game does get pretty tough, thanks for trying anyways!!

Cool game! Gameplay-wise, it felt really solid and good.

Pros:
- Fun gameplay.
- The difficulty. Challenging but not impossible.
- Simple controls.
- The video in the end.

Cons:
- Horrible graphics (sorry :P but I'm sure you can improve them without problems!)
- No audio. Made the experience feel kind of "empty".

This game would easily be ported to mobile without any suffering.
Great job!

Feel free to check out my game too, if you have time.

It's very well finished and it's very funny to play, the only thing that I would change it's the fact that I can just stand on the top of the screen and the level it's almost completed because there aren't many planets spawning out of screen. Keep on it!! Good job!

@foxisxiii Thanks for the feedback! Good to know about that trick, I'll try to force people away from doing that in the mobile release of the game :)

Very clever use of theme! I really like the idea and the controls are good, the only thing I could think of improving would be to add some music and a few animations for dying etc. But overall I think it is really good!

Great game! The idea is super nice and well implemented. It isn't easy to get it right when you play it for the first time ^^

Love the "ending" as well. Can't say I expected such an apocalyspe on my screen :p

As others said, graphics could be better and some audio would have been nice, but overall, great entry! Congrats!

@linky439 yes, there definitely is a bit of a learning curve to start out. Glad you stuck through it and played to the end though! Thanks for the feedback :)
