LimitedLootHunters by rhewid

[raw]
made by rhewid for LD 42 (COMPO)

Hello!

This is my first Ludum Dare entry. Since Ifound out about this competition, I always wanted to participate.

Sadly I couldn't finish adding some music, but I'll try to continue the work on this game. Maybe someday it will have some music.

Anyways here is the idea for this game with this Ludum Dares theme "Running out of space".

You start out with three Players. Your goal: keep them alive as long as possible. You'll get Loot from enemies and also from chests. Some of these are useable some are not. Useable items will vanish after they were used, equip items however will not. How_to.png

The violet highlighted boxes are where you obtain your loot. If all of these slots are occupied you won't get any new loot. -> Keep them empty!

The other coloured boxes represent the free storage of the group. Each group Member has 2 colored Columns. Equipable Items can be put there, they will be automatically equipped. You can swap these Items around. However say blue dies and had some sword equipped and you try to equip it on green, you won't get the effect on him. Useable items however can still be used.

Controls: Mouse only

Left click: Swap the items in the inventory. Middle click: Shows information for the item. Right click: Use the item if it is useable.

Update

Thank you all for the feedback. I've been working on this game after the competition and I wanted to show you my progress.

LD42_LimiteLootHuntersProgress.gif

There have been alot of changes and I'm looking forward to add even more to the game. Changes that were made: - You can now trash items. - You can now move the player to the enemy. - Each player has his own inventory and equip slots. - Animation for loot drops. - Graphical overhaul. - Skill system - still work in progress.

I have updated the background image and the player sprite. Huge thanks to rvros from itch.io (https://rvros.itch.io/animated-pixel-hero) for providing this awesome payer asset for free and also edermunizz from itch.io (https://edermunizz.itch.io/free-pixel-art-hill) who provides this great free background asset.

It is a little confusing, but pretty tactical, great work. Keep it up. Could you try out my game?

Your game idea is very good, but I couldn't figure out if there was a way to discard items. Item information was also shown behind the items, which made it very difficult to read.

@rkuhl Thanks! Yes there is no way to discard the items. I had it in the game but it would make it too easy and you wouldn't have the problem to run out of space. I will check out the item information bug.

The art is simple, the mechanics are a little confusing at first, but it's charming! My orange dude is basically invincible currently! I don't really understand why the guys behind him kicked the bucket so fast, but who cares, he's the most kick ass hero in the realm.

It's really quite hard to see what's happening, especially with the info panel which is illegible at the display resolution, maybe change the colouration on it slightly.

For some reason my whole team took damage, not just the tank, so they died after 3 monsters because I couldn't heal them and the back of the team got insta killed at some point :\

But I could play it through anyway because I could stack the best items on my tank who got immortal in the process. But it depends on what "playing it through" means because well... my inventory got full but nothing happened so if I'm correct the end of the game is dying because there is no more room left for healing items.

It was a fun experience even if I couldn't enjoy the main (would be) strength of the game: managing the team's resources.

For a first time jam it's a pretty solid idea, someday I will make a game like this aswell

The game is a bit confusing but I liked your inventory idea. It is a good game for a first entry, keep going!

First time was a little confusing but in my second run I ran out of space. Though all the back of the team got destroyed and I only had the tank left.

Great job for the first time! :)

Always hard the first time :)
I think the game lack of readability. I don't know what i'm doing, if i'm doing it right and the effect of it.
Also life of your character are at the opposite of where action is so it's difficult to keep track of it.
keep going !

Well done, fellow first-timer! I like the concept. The graphics are simple, but effective. Too bad there isn't any audio. Also, it seems like the first two dudes die really quickly. I would've expected that the dude in front would function as a tank or something, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Hey the idea is very interesting, it has a deep complexity to it. The control is actually very straightforward too. There is a lot you can add to that to make the game more enjoyable, one of which is definitely a replay button. Sometimes I run into a soft locked situation and cannot progress, then the replay/restart button or command would be very very helpful.

Anyhow, I ran into an error, maybe you can look into that and fix this in the post-jam version.

Not bad for a first jam game. It was a little confusing at first without a proper tutorial, but when I finally found out the controls the gameplay was relatively simple but fun. Good Job.

Too much RNG dependent for my taste. Blue always died too early for some reason until I got rods for them, then they became practically invincible. :stuck_out_tongue: There's not much to do after the inventory is full, but otherwise, was cool to play. Nice first game!
