Faster than space by LukeL

made by LukeL for LD 42 (JAM)

Faster than space is a game about managing a space ship that is trying to escape from a collapsing universe by reaching a wormhole at the center of the universe. While on this journey random events happen that might wipe you out before you reach the wormhole (or might not :D).

What to do

You manage a small space craft, you can order the crewmen around to man different systems to increase their efficiency as needed on your journey. Manage your resources well to survive the random events that range from a crewman hurting himself at work to apocalyptic asteroid barrages. Make sure to check out the tutorial in the game before you start playing :>

The UI was very confusing. Even with the tutorial... I couldn't figure out what was going on. It seemed similar to FTL. Feels like it would have good gameplay though. With a little bit more polish, it would help a ton.

Background music was quite cool, but the same cannot be said about almost all other aspects of the game. The tutorial was presented poorly: convoluted and hard to understand. The UI is similarly hard to understand and the point of the game is not clear. Unfortunately, I just did not find the game engaging besides looking pretty. That said, good job on the graphics, they look quite nice for a game jam.

I was pleasantly surprised with this one! I thought that the game would be over-complicated and hard to understand, but once I got a hang of the UI it was quite a lot of fun, I'd even go as far to say that it's one of my favorites! Managing my crew was hectic but never unfair, and the random events always kept me on my toes. I beat the game in 12 minutes, I really enjoyed it 4.5/5 overall!

Although if I hadn't grasped the game mechanics I can see how this would be a very confusing game, putting more effort into your tutorial would have been a good idea.

Sorry, but the game was not very good. The main reason it's the control. Sometimes I would like to move some my crew to some machine (like medical bay) but I move other crew or click on the medical bay.

Would be useful that don't have to locked in one person, like click person A to move to Energy and done, he would be deselect.

When you want to see the machines info, maybe only a mouse over then would be enough to see if they are working.

About the HUD, they don't have a priority in all, I don't know what is more important to read and see. Maybe these articles help:

Nice game, I managed to figure out how to play, it's clever. But, in my opinion, it's a bit long to complete and the random events don't feel really challenging but annoying particularly when they tend to stack. The music is cool and I love your graphics, good job!

I got a bit lost in this one. I liked the audio, but the controls were tricky (I never managed to select a crew member on the first attempt)

Yeah I second the Frank, selecting the crew is pain in the ass otherwise awesome idea.

This was a nice little ship management game :)
I had never actually played one before, but there was a nice tutorial to help me out! That was really thoughtful and shows you took the time to think this all out. Well done :D

Well done! Very comprehensive, but that's where it shows its weaknesses. The UI is confusing which makes it very hard to tell how you are doing. Technically very impressive, but the execution needs a lot of work. Also, it is a bit too similar to FTL (concept and music). Congrats on finishing a game!

Had a little but of trouble selecting the crew and stations but apart from that I like the idea. Brings back good memories of FTL. Nice stuff.

This is a cool game but the controls are a little fiddly. A bit hard to select the right point on the crew and ship which makes it hard to move your guys around quickly. Also it was hard to figure out which stations were for oxygen, etc. Good to play once you work it out.
