Boaty McBoatface - the game all about boats.

Capture.PNG

It is the time of the steam engines. You are the captain of a small fishing ship. Expand your enterprise by catching fish, upgrading your ships and exploring the seas. But make sure that you don't run out of power - if your ships are at sea for too long the crews will starve! - Can you reach the rank of Grand Admiral?

Controls

  • WASD - Move camera

  • Mousewheel - zoom

  • LMB - select ship or city

  • RMB - give orders

  • Spacebar - pause

  • 1,2,3 - time controls

Bugs and workarounds

  • If you run out of fuel, your ship starts moving really slowly. However, there is currently a bug that means that it won't go back to normal speed if you refill. So don't run out of power!

  • If you have two ships with the same name, weird stuff might happen. So don't do that.

  • When having a ship selected while timepasses, the amount of fish you have might not be shown correctly (just a UI issue). Just reselect the ship and it will show.

  • When selecting a ship, the timespeed jumps to normal speed. If you want to have a ship selected and speed up time, use the hotkeys 1,2,3.

  • The latest messages might not show up immediatly. But you know, that is part of the theme as communication is slow and difficult on the sea.

Tools used

  • Unity

  • Blender

  • Beepbox

Like the overall gameplay. Has lots of weird UI decisions but like the way it works.

Visually nice. The boating management was interesting, but the game felt a bit slow, but I supposed that can't be helped with this genre. A good entry.

I like it. Chill. UI could be a bit nicer (mainly everything is too hard to read, it's all so small!) a nice little fishing simulator :)

The low poly graphics graphics has been implemented in a really nice way, and really suits the kind of theme this game has. But just one tip, I don't know which version of Unity you are using, but if its the later ones, I suggest you use a tool called "Textmesh Pro" from the asset store. It helps make the UI a LOT better, and your game needs that right now. Anyways, great job with it.

Nice and relaxing gameplay. Although upgrades prices sometimes feel weird. And with lots of boats micromanagement gets quite complicated. Would be great if you could select and give commands to your boats without resetting the time warp to 1x speed. Overall quite enjoyable, nice job!

Neat game, has a lot of very simple systems that don't interact with each other though, so the gameplay doesn't feel very complex. The look is pretty good, music is nice. UI is a little hard to read. Yeah, I probably should have increased the speed.

This has quite a lot of mechanical complexity, surprisingly so for a 48 hour effort. I'm a fan of the art, got a bit of a weak spot for pixely stuff.
You may want to improve the UI a bit. It looks unpolished; things like font sizes are a bit off.
Nice job overall!

The game was quite fun. My first time selling my fish got me quite much money. But after that not so much( yeah, I changed the harbor where i sold the fish)

** Theme **

You got the theme pretty good..

** Audio **

Liked the background music (:

** Graphics **

Nice low poly graphics. Good fish effect. Well done.

Wow. This is an enormous game for just 48 hours. Nice work. I'm going to echo the comments above about the interface stuff, but really impressive job overall.

Really cool game and nice way to apply the theme. I got a weird problem where I bought a second ship and none of them worked anymore.

Had a lot of fun with this! Though after a couple times selling off my fish, it seemed like my boat stopped pulling up fish at all, even sailing to new areas. Might be my doing something wrong though.

Like the idea, not enough strategic / management games here. Had a bad bug though (second ship got stuck in the harbor on purchase and would not move).

Awesome idea and art(these low-poly-s look beautiful), but the game needs a little bit more polishing.

For a compo entry it is really nice! The message bug (feature ) makes it a little bit hard to see when you are out of food or coal. But I really like the gameplay. It's polished and feels good. And the graphics are nice! Well done.

great job for building this kind of game for the compo, complete with music and everything!

VEry interesting boat/fishing management game. The controls are a bit quirky but once I figured them out I had some fun with it. This is one of those if given some more polish, I might find myself playing for a few hours.
