Key Thieves by Thijs Tak

[raw]
made by Thijs Tak for LD 42 (COMPO)

"The keys to your farm have been stolen. You will need to track down the thieves if you ever want to enter your house again."

This is a small adventure game where the hero needs to find and reclaim the keys to win the game. However, without any pockets, he can only carry two items at a time, one in each hand. Gather food and upgrade him to complete your quest.

You can control the hero with the following keys:

Out of combat: - WASD -> Movement - Space -> Jump - Left mouse -> Grab items - Right mouse -> Target enemy and swtich to combat mode. You need to hold down the right mouse button. - Middle mouse button -> Show the way home. Hold down like the right mouse button.

In Combat: - W -> Advance towards opponent. - AD -> Circle opponent. - Left Click -> Attack

Note: All keys can be rebound in the startup screen. Gamepad will also work, but wasn't tested a lot.

The enemy doesn't attack due to various reasons. Also, enemies that will drop items will have the item equiped on their back. Apples are used to upgrade your abilities and keys are needed to win. There is a start of a tutorial in the game, but not all controls are explained.

Tips: - Items will have a purple glow so you can find them when they drop in the grass and enemies are finite. There are more than enough apples to fully upgrade if you want.

  • The skeletons carrying the keys are spawned from the start of the game and are visible at large distances. Normal skeletons spawn when you get close to their start and will remain in the area.

  • When you enter combat you will drop the two items you hold in your hands, but not the items you carry on your body. Upgrading your carry capacity will really speed up the game as you can do this up to four time, for six items max.

Good luck.

Post dare update: Enemies will flash green when hit. Beams of light will indicate the general location of missing keys while holding down the left mouse button when not in combat.

Note: For voting, please use the original release, or ignore the new features. Both features will make the game quite a bit more playable.

This game looks like it could be good, but it's so hard to find the hey thieves (it feels more luck-dependent than anything) and really easy to get lost while going between the farm and those enemies I couldn't kill because my hands were full. The camera movement felt nice, though! I wish I could have controlled it directly. Also, the combat mechanic of focusing you movements around your enemy felt cool.

I feel that you have the start of a very solid combat system, but there was minimal feedback, I didn't know if I had hit or not. The skeletons did not seem that competent either. I liked the smooth camera but a little bit more control would have been nice. I feel like 12 keys is quite a lot to expect a player to find, especially when there isn't really a method to track them down. With clues I think it could be good fun. Further development to clean up certain areas would improve on a strong base.

What is feeling good with this game is control and exploring the world. Unfortunatly explanation and sometimes camera don't show what could be important in the game. I just suggest less text and more intuitive gameplay to get a better experience. You got something but seems still looking for what you want to show us. By the way hitbox didn't seems to work for me. Keep it up !

Very nice entry! As said above the camera movement is really smooth and nice! I think it would have been nice if the enemy would engage you as well once you are near. I experienced a few times that enemies walk away during combat.

Thank you very much for the feedback. I made two minor changes that will make the game a bit more playable. While I don't think I'll be making more changes to this version I'm already using what I learned here and your feedback in a new project.

Thanks again.

Camera rotation was driving me crazy. It's really hard to control and understand what's going on. Not bad forest location called me to get adventures but after 10 minutes switch mode to battle broke or somethng and I couldn't take my sword.

Interesting game idea, and i really like the smooth switch from combat movement to normal movement and back.
I really like the models of enemies and players, as well as the general forest setting :)
Everything about the enemies has been already pointed out.

I don't see any connection to the theme, but still:
The mood of the game was nice and the Legend-Of-Zelda-esque aiming mode was fun.
What I didn't like was the camera, which felt rather lazy and made some really strange movements when you jumped down a cliff, for example. Music would have made the game much more enjoyable and I think it was a little too long without variations of the gameplay.

Looks very ambitious, but unfortunately the game play feels lacking.
The walking is too slow for my taste. Also, 12 keys is quite a lot, esp. as the latter ones you'll really have to scout all over the map.
With a bit more polish and adjustment this could get real fun.

Quite a "big" feeling world and the combat showed promise. Found it kinda hard to "find my way hope" after going and fetching a key. Connection to the theme is a bit tenuous haha but i appreciated the ambition behind this project.

I love such floating camera, but sometimes it works not completely correct, that sad. Also sad that there is no sounds. Also I like fighting mechanics, but enemies don't want to fight with me at all. When I jumped off of the island I started endlessly falling. It could be a really cool entry, but too much mistakes makes me feel like the game is uncompleted.

I don't see the link with the theme. But nice idea, good luck if you continue the dev ;)

Points for the charming 3d and the intro, other than that the game is a bit awkward to play because of the controls/camera, and the long distances you need to move. Still, well done
