Spar! by Cryovr

[raw]
made by Cryovr for LD 42 (JAM)

Use your nonsensical sword to damage enemies no matter how far away they are and keep your ground! The closer the enemies are, the more damage you can do!

//README// Use WASD to move and click anywwhere on the screen to attack

Ok, sooo... i unfortunately wasn't able to start working on the game until Sunday night, i wanted to participate in the compo but i'l have to submit Spar to the Jam, next time i guess.

Nice game! Surprisingly good visually even though there isn't much art... minimalism with some particle effects goes a long way!

It feels like another mechanic or two would make it a little less repetitive, but not bad for a game in a weekend :)

I like the player sprite, and the sword swinging effect is nice. One recommendation, though, would be to have the screen shake only when you hit an enemy, not just when you swing. It would make it feel more responsive.

Simple but fun game! I really liked the graphics, I just think that it needs more feedback to the player, to make destroying the squares more satisfing.

@jeremy-ryan Thank you, i really appreciate it! You are totally right, there was actually a dash mechanic that ALMOST made it to the final game but it generated a few very time-consuming bugs.

I like the damage mechanic, it allows you to get out of sticky situations. It feels fun and satisfying to play! The movement however feels a bit slow in general, might be worth experimenting with making both player and enemy move faster :)

It's too bad you didn't have as much time. The full game loop is there for sure and it would feel pretty good with some polish.

Good job though!

Nice little game!

Pros:
- Nice graphics (too bad there is no enemy sprite  )
- Fun and satisfying mechanic

Cons:
- Damage felt kinda confusing, don't know if it's a bug in the health bar (it didn't start full and I could take more hits than I thought before I died)

Cheers!

The idea is good. The black square enemies could be something like character, something like shadow of him. Something to look like enemy. Took a while to make me know of the character hit on the mouse cursor and not on the sword of the character.

Neat game ! My favorite part was that we were able to find out the sword's abilities (stronger when used closer, ...) by ourselves, thanks to the variety of situations. It's also visualy clean, without anything fancy but with an emphasis on readable action.

I would have loved some special cubes as well as some soundtrack, but I guess space is not the only thing we were running out of during the jam...

I love this concept. I also love how you can hit multiple enemies at the same time. One slight bug I noticed though: I imagine you didn't mean to allow players to end up with a score ending in ".5"?

Never thought about doing a wave style game, nailed the theme. I did lose my cursor though with the bright background.
