Collect stuff, be punished, have fun!

THEME

The more loot, the hungrier the enemies! Fight your fantasy hoarding urges and watch yourself throw your hard earned loot away. Or fight through it and beat the game with all coins intact (HARD)

LORE

Some people quest for glory. Some for power. And some for that sweeeet sweeet loot.

You are a kinda-noble warrior, set out to become the fastest wealthy hero the land has ever seen.

In fact, you are so eager for quick wealth, that you skipped training, buying a weapon and all that noob shit, only to get to the dungeon as fast as possible.

Not fight your... well dont fight, because you don't have a weapon silly... Loot your way through the dungeon, and get out with as much delicious cash as you can carry.

BUGS

  • The end screen mentions an incorrect max score, you can actually win the game with more gold than displayed.
  • A signpost mentions highscore, we were not able to implement a highscore in time. It does log your local time but never post it.
  • Coin CAN glitch through the walls if you throw them hard enough, or the client is experiencing some lag.
  • The GOLEMS, an end level mob, does simply not work as intended. They were supposed to be slow, but hit hard. For some reason they move fast, and hit badly.

Probably much more yet undiscovered.

Gargoyl looks too hard for me. Good game anyway well polished for sure. Interesting concept, good sound, music and graphics.

The Game looks and feels really good! I encountered a weird bug in the first gargoyle room after I died twice (we did nothing special, took a barrel of mead from the machine and then shoved it into the Lich. Then we died a second time): On respawn, my radius was really small and decreased upon collecting further coins. Dropping them increased the radius. The enemies stopped moving altogether and I only took damage through fire. I just walked on then to see were the game leads and was trapped in the golem room because the gate would not open. I just wanted to report this.

I really like the game though and will try it again!

this is VERY COOL! Also including steam keys is the best possible way of distributing LD entry i ever seen! Well done! Cool game!

A superb entry! The balancing act of risk vs. reward was very well executed but save points after most rooms would have smoothed out the otherwise harsh difficulty level.

Really enjoyed this game. The Gargoyls scared the crap out of me the first time.

Pretty nice game!, I like that you used some of your time to develop a properly interesting level with some real challenge and intelligent use of your own mechanics. Also, extra kudos for writing such a long and nice piece of music. Awesome job!

The game looks interesting, but I was not able to get it to start after opening it, seems to not be taking input from anything (on mac)

Hahahah! Such a good game! There were some bugs (like buying hearts was possible just one time and my cpu couldn't carry bigger and bigger circle around my hero), but they doesn't matter. I struggle a lot with these first gargoyles. And you got a 5 stars in humor because of a Lore :D <3

That was a cool concept. I appreciate the visual radius that the gold creates and the strategy the system creates. The graphics and sound are both very goo, too, and the fact that the game even has freaking Steam Codes is quite impressive.

If I had one complaint it's that the gargoyles are tedious to deal with. More fires could be helpful in that regard, particularly if they aren't nestled against a wall.

Overall, though, this game is awesome! Great work!

One of the best interpretations of the theme that I've seen so far! Really clever idea, and I liked the music.

It's a fun game with a smart mechanic! Music is well done and graphics, although simple, are pleasant. The controls could need a bit of work since sometimes your collision box gets stuck on walls and your character sometimes freezes after being hit.
Regarding the theme it was a nice use of it, with a touch of humor which is highly appreciated. You also managed to put in a decent amount of content which is commendable given the low amount of time we have to develop!
I also appreciate very much the fact that you don't underestimate the intelligence of the game's players, not giving away all the solutions (like how you deal with the gargoyles). This is something we are dearly missing in games these days.

I love your logo and character design.

The lore section was pretty funny and one of the rare cases I didn't mind reading an intro text (and it was obligatory as well!)

The music set the mood well. Did I hear correctly that you composed multiple soundtracks? Nice! The coin sound effect was a bit too generic for my taste, maybe some more time with bfxr might have netted you something a bit more unique.

Overall I enjoyed playing your game, I especially liked all the different approaches to the whole "harder to play if you carry more gold" theme: The "drop it to get past danger" mechanic, the choice you have of luring the gargoyles to the fire or simply shoving them in when you drop your gold, the path planning you have to do to get past the ghosts and so on.

The main problem I saw with your game was the fact that it feels a bit too buggy. Now and then my character would simply stop until I released and pressed the move buttons again. When I dropped coins the circle around me would move inconsistently, sometimes shrinking and sometimes growing after a coin drop. Not sure whether that was intentional, but I would have preferred "drop a coin and the circle shrinks, collect one and it grows". Also getting resurrected at a checkpoint would decrease the circle, but not the coin amount.

Also I was not sure whether that was some sort of glitch but I wasn't able to make it past the golems. I read the note that they die if they can't move anymore but I didn't get it. There was one golem that didn't move and didn't die (I think it died when I killed the gargoyles in the room). And the other golems moved. When I dropped all my gold I was able to push them in a position that trapped them in place, so they wouldn't move anymore, but still they wouldn't die. Maybe I'm dumb but I felt that could have been communicated better.

All in all a solid entry, especially considering the sheer content of the game. If it were a bit more stable I would have loved to finish it.

hi @cerno-b thanks for the wellwritten feedback. There are 3 pieces of music in total, and one dedicated for winning. If you get tired of one track, hitting N will skip the track and take another one.

_This_ is a compo game? It's way too good! Graphics, music, theme! It has it all! Just the idea of "monsters can smell the gold" was outstanding on its own, but partnered with what I've said before, it makes up for a very fun and polished experience.

I did have the problem with the golems though. Extremely fast, and sometimes they would just push me with no real consequence. Still a bothersome enemy to deal with though, so I thought that it was a mechanic until I saw the bug list.

Well, it was a creative and challenging puzzle game. Great work! [In behalf of my team](twitter.com/whalesandgames), we congratulate you on making such a fantastic submission. Cheers! :whale:

Thanks Moski :) And yeah, it was a bit of a timecrunch, and I made a mistake on the golems. I hope I can find some time here in the yuleseason to polish it up and put a post-jam version out.

Also working on the timelapse video.

I like the execution of the game. It's very well polished, as my first time in Ludum Dare, this is way cooler than I thought. The game is hard but fun. Overall, it's great.

Very cool and fun use of the theme. One of the more creative interpretations I've seen.
Great music, visuals are good, level design is good.

I got stuck at the golems and gargoyles' gate, wasn't sure how to proceed there.

I ran into some bugs to note: if you die and respawn at a fountain the sense area resets to the same as 0 no matter how many coins you have, dropping coins will then make it get smaller (possible to make so monsters dont detect you when you touch them) and even bugged out at one point so I couldn't pick up any coins.
I picked up a heart even though I only had 3 coins; I ended up with 3 coins

For whatever reason, the game does not respond to any input on the Mac version, making it impossible to even start the game (I'm running Sierra 10.12.6). Sorry I can't play or rate your game at the moment :( I might try to run the Windows version on a virtual machine tomorrow.

Nice, I enjoyed it, until I ran into the gargoyles. They made the whole thing a bit tedious.
But still a cool concept and nicely executed!

Also cool that you put it on Steam, cudos!

For the amount I played it was really fun, was peeved that the fire hurt me. I guess I had to get all the gold in the area to open the gate? Also I was unclear on what would and wouldn't trigger the AI. Aside from that I liked the graphics and music, went very well together. Great job.
