Quicksand by kr4ft3r

[raw]
made by kr4ft3r for LD 42 (JAM)

Quicksand is a physics game about trying to walk through.. surreal quicksand of some sort. Playing your own music recommended.

Amazing ride this LD. The concept I chose to work on (on Saturday late night) turned out more challenging than I pretended it is, and the game itself almost drowned in the sand as its main character. What came out is neither a decent quicksand nor human body simulator, but perhaps a good video for some slow or slightly depressing music. And watching that guy sink turned out pleasing in some way, what more can I ask for. Looks better live than on screenshots I promise :P

How to play: To move limbs, aim limb circles with mouse button, hold left click and drag away in desired direction. You will know you are pulling a limb if a string appears between it and the cursor. Release click to release the limb. Body parts will get stuck if they sink into sand, but with some pulling force they can be freed.

Controls: Mouse and left click to play, space to restart, escape for menu.

A very special mini game, a ragdoll game, simplist but very fun, very nice graphics, with better control it could be even more funny.

Hilarious game! woah that was messy... but also super original!

If to constructively critisize: I wish I had a better camera angle to control the limbs faster.
Also, couldn't fully understand how the sinking worked.

@kr4ft3r my bad, managed to download it second try.

Managed to survive for 14 units. Is it any good? :dog:

Interesting, but controls are annoying.

This game was actually really morbid :D an interesting take on the theme for sure. I found it difficult to form a strategy and couldn't seem to get very far, but overall I enjoyed it!

@manusaiz hey, thanks for letting me know. However I tested all three downloads and see no problem. Can you let me know which port you tried to download (win, mac or linux) and how it failed?

@manusaiz highest I got is 52.. But I wouldn't expect from anyone to tryhard, I think most pleasure you can get from this game is watching the guy sink and disappear.
@figjig Thanks but I wouldn't dare compare, as his games are playable when compared.

@kr4fter haha definetly, I forgot to mention it, but I must confess that trying to straightforward sink his face under the sand was satisfying :yum:

Huh, its not a bad game, and has quite the interesting concept. But the sinking felt kinda random, and I would hope for some better controls.

But overall, pretty nice

Hey mate, It's quite a charming game, the controls are kind of hard to master, I managed to walk for 43 points of score, should give it a more tries I guess to feed this sand belly, so he won't have enough space for me.

XD it was fun ! Good trip x)
Anyhow, I'm not a fan of the "best played with the background music you want" ^^"
You could have used some sound variations, sound-design (maybe a funny one ?) and/or dynamic music that evolves to boost you up when you do great, or that kind of thing. Audio is important ^^

This reminded me of qwop, but less difficult! I had a heavy metal song (Amon Amarth - Raise Your Horns) playing in the background while this played, which made things really much funnier.

@josscomposer true, and I usually put some effort into audio, but this was a late start one-man project and also I had real reasons to believe that sound is not as important here and player would be better off with his own music. Any tips on sound banks and/or process? I always either spend hours looking online for specific sounds (jam) or make them in simple online generators (compo) and then heavily edit in Audacity.

@masterkrepta thanks :D I like how some verses in that song end with two tones that go lower down, must go well with sinking

This feels a lot like playing Toribash or Qwop, and I'm so bad at both I couldn't do anything haha!
It's more of a toy than of a game, but it's actually funny and addictive to see how much you can toy with this character, so I had my share of laughs with this one ! Good job :)

@kr4ft3r if it's a jam call me ;-) for a compo, I suggest using synths, like in cubase or some other DAW, (maybe you can practice between jams !) and mix them together with several free sounds you found online, for example you take the start of a sound, the middle of an other and the end of a third (chosen wisely) to give birth to something new :-)
For the music, you can do some loops that go well together (you can use synths too) within a DAW again, and then use FMOD (or just your own coding skills) to make conditions for the different instruments to fade in and out, and for the different loops to transition from one to another, etc :-)

Absolutely fun to play and roleplay with! I don't think I'll ever get tired of this. I'm definitely keeping this on my desktop to play when my internet is out.

Oh man - that's creepy fun. The zoom in as he dies is an especially nice touch. (You monster.)
