Obake

Play Now! Through no fault of your own, the spirits have risen. Well, not risen - but inflated - into the third dimension. They are not happy and will seek to drag you forever into their flat lands.

Defend yourself with your De-mension Gun (tm). If an obaké touches you - it's fine, don't worry about it. BUT. It will materialize in the 2nd dimension: the only place it can destroy you. Yes, 2D is dangerous but it's your only real hope. Collect enough co-planar totems from the second dimension to force the hapless obaké back to their home forever!

Controls

Fighting cross-dimensional phantoms is no walk in the park, so why should the controls be easy?

  • In 2d: W A S D will move you around the ladder-infested crypt.
  • In 3d: W A S D will move you, mouse will look and shoot, and space to jump (or SMC: Standard Minecraft Controls).

(Pro tip: the controls are insanity. Strafing is pretty much your only hope to control both worlds at the same time. Good luck with that.)

This game uses a couple of pretty recent browser features: WebGL2 (not supported by Safari yet) and JavaScript Native Modules (which ARE supported by Safari: in fact, they were the first - but older browsers won't know how to load them).

That was really clever and unique!
I wanted the graphics to look more colourful, but then they would clash with the foreground.
Great use of the theme! Best mood so far!

A rather interesting idea, though I don't know if I like a game overlayed on top of another it was still an interesting experience.

That was unique but I don't think the themes were mashed together too well. Most of the time another side was just mindlessly walking around when you tried to accomplish something on the other side. The idea would need some more work to make decisions actually matter on both sides, making it more like a puzzle game.

As a side note, I got some motion sickness by playing this game. I won't let it greatly affect my ratings but it shows that moving background that the player is not actively focusing on may cause this effect.

This is so fun! I love the combination of genres, and I've never seen a game that combines 3d and 2d (the worst dimension) like this. I love multitasking games like this and you executed it really well. I also had never heard of Obaké before, so I learned something new today. Nicely done!

Very well done - hope you work on this post-jam. Was not expecting a 2d/3d mashup but I'm glad someone did it, and the story and the gameplay mechanics work really well to tie the two dimensions together.

Cool concept, good mix of 2D & 3D which is pretty disturbing and fun in the same time, in 2D mode, the character is a bit slow imho, platformer mechanics could also be improved to make controls less stiff and add few feedback. Very good entry overally, congratz and keep up the good work :rocket:

Interesting take on the theme :) I was hoping you would be switching from 2D to 3D, but this makes it more challenging and unique.

Now that was a bit of a mind fuck... Very interesting challenge having to navigate both at once. Great use of the theme!

Ha, took a second to figure out what was going on, I anticipated switching back and forth...both at once is challenging and awesome! Also loved the spirits transporting between dimensions. Very clever, well-implemented, and difficult. I loved the "WIN WIN WIN WIN" flurry when I finally accomplished it :)

What a surreal experience! You definitely think out of the box with this one. It's crazy tough, but that's how I like it. Nice job!

Wow, Nice game idea ! Mixing 2D with 3D at the same time. I really enjoyed your game, it was pretty challenging and it let me so confused hahahahah

This was great. Kinda easy once you get used to controls (and can cheat a bit by there not being overlap in certain controls (i.e. strafing + mouse). Really nice mix with moody graphics and a creepy laugh.

Also, the ghosts in 3D were real scary.

Hah! Playing two games at once... That's my jam right there! While the initial part was tricky, I quickly got used to it when I discovered the 2D section was really easy and had no threats to speak of, so it was a matter of strafe-shooting the ghosts. Surprised the jump key didn't make the 2D side jump as well... could've put a few traps or enemies for the player to work around. Even the ledges didn't pose any sort of challenge, since I couldn't walk off. Still, the idea's pretty good and has a lot of promise! Good job!

It took me a while to understand what's happening, but ho boy what a game ! I love the idea, I think this is the best concept for this time I saw so far. I love the atmosphere too, very unsettling.
Also I forgot I could shoot on the 3rd dimension so I won by just running away from the ennemies :P
Overall, great game ! Congratulation !

This was a really cool concept! It took a little getting used to initially, as I just focused on shooting the enemies and ignored the 2D game initially. Eventually I started to get the hang of both dimensions though and I thought it was really cool! it would be sweet to see an expansion of the idea down the road! I wish I could have seen my score on the HUD during the game though. Good job =)

The laughing really startled me D: The concept is really awesome and it was really fun to play it (good thing I'm not too bad at multitasking ^^)! The enemy dying SFX got a bit annoying after a bit unfortunately but everything else was great!

This is the kind of concept i was hoping to find with this theme :D

Mood is very scary especially the sound of the obaké (that's freaky laugh !)

A lot of work for a compo, good job !

that creepy laugh. why did I play this at 2.50am!? really enjoyed the challenge, made more sense once I understood contact in 3d made an enemy in the 2d world. Enjoyed that you sometimes had to back track 2d world in order to avoid enemies in 3d world, and to shoot enemies in 3d world you sometimes had sacrifice your position in the 2d world. Shared controls are an interesting head-f***, and I found this quite accessible! :D Good work!

This is a very cool concept and something I havent actually seen before. If i heard of your idea before this i would have thought it would turn out to be bad, but you really pulled it off to make a great game. Good Job.

I like the game, but I agree with Nash above when they say the two perspectives don't mesh well, and would be better suited for a puzzle game. That said, the game here was really fun to play and the controls were solid. I thought it was interesting, intentional or not, how you had to keep moving upwards (towards known danger) or to the side (into possible unknown danger). It made it that much more spooky to play

Wow, I really liked this! Good job. This mechanics of playing two characters, in some way, remembered my game, but in a different approach. I think you could expand this game with more puzzles, enemys and levels. Good job!

Please, take a look at my game too: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/confessional

Horror was a really good genre to choose to mix with the gameplay - While I was concentrating on either 2d or 3d, then swapping to the other, seeing an enemy super close was better than any jump scare because it was based on my actions. Great job!

This is... mindbogglingly great, but can you actually die in 3D? Looks like the 3D ghosts inflict no damage. Still one of the better entries I've seen. Glad you made this.
