Think before you jump by Delalandii

[raw]
made by Delalandii for LD 39 (JAM)

My first Ludum Dare entry is a micro-platformer where jumping costs power. It has four levels and four different endings.

I didn't have enough time to design the levels properly so the game is extremely easy. Actually it's more an idea than a game, but this is what LD is about, right?

titleScreen.png

Controls: - Arrows to move - Space to jump - Shift to run

Tools: - Visual Studio 2013 - C++ - SDL

Art: - The robot's spritesheet has been drawn by Bluerobin2, excepting the dying animation made by me. - The machine is a more pixelated version of this machine drawn by Buch. - The tiles have been created adding borders to some sprites of this tileset, also by Buch.

Sure it was easy, but it was fun! I loved the concept. Cute graphics and stuff. Definitely could use some more complex levels, though I did replay it to improve, and that was neat.

Very fun game, more levels and mechanics (such as enemies trying to stop you) would be a nice addition but very good entry!

The game was cool and challenging. Could not get passed the second level. Great game man :)

I was stuck in the second level until I remembered that I could run! After that all levels were very easy. The game was interesting and have cute graphics.

@ranner198 It is not supposed to crash :/. The screen should go black giving you the option to replay it. Thanks to all for playing!

I don't understand the meaning of the ending. Thought I needed more power so i replayed until I did this: http://i.imgur.com/hx7gEJQ.gifv Did I win? (The ending has another guy walking off to the right)

Cool concept, but the level design around the concept was a bit lacking. The graphics are nice for programmer art though (I probably can't draw those sprites haha). I enjoyed it though, it's different. Most games you just run in and kill everything quickly but in this one you have to think before you act, pretty neat.

Nice mechanics! And the player animation was well done. Wish there were more levels!

@ludumanthony You unlocked the normal ending (power-meter in yellow). To unlock the good ending, you should finish with the power-meter above 75%, i.e. colored in green.

You're absolutely right regarding the level design, unfortunately I was running out of time. Thanks for your feedback!

Nice game! Jumping feels good and the sound effects fit. I also really like the jumping animation. I forgot I could run and thought everyone was joking that it was too easy - then I remembered and completed it!

Good concept, definitely has potential for a fun puzzle game. The running felt a little clunky, but the running out of power animation and sound effects were spot on.

The idea is nice, the level difficulty curve need some work though. The story is nice, and you should keep developing this game! More levels and an actual end would be nice!

Overall, I enjoyed playing! Well done!

Nice little game, I loved the graphics. The concept is pretty solid, probably with a little more work it can became a very good game!

Nice game. The graphics were cute and it's nice to see other people use SDL for Ludum Dare. While the game was short (though I'm not sure about easy; especially not if you forget about the running mechanic halfway through...) wanting to see the different endings increased the playtime enough for this not to be that much of a problem. Unfortunately I could only get 3 ending (going away, repairing the machine with enough power, repairing the machine without enough power) and have no idea what the fourth one even is. Good job overall.

@satanos Sorry to hear that. I have played (and installed) many LD games labelled as 'unsafe' by my protection software, but I'm not encouraging you to do that if you doesn't want to.

@junber Thanks for playing and for the detailed feedback! There are two endings after repairing the machine with enough power: the normal ending (battery in orange) and the good ending (battery in green).

@delalandii

No problem, I had this cases with a few other games too, Avast has a lot of false-positive issues, I just want to let you know that ;). I played your game and loved it, in particular the beautiful pixel art design. I'm working on an upcoming video about the jam section of LD39 and your game will be in it :).

@delalandii BTW I informed Avast of this false-positive with this link : https://www.avast.com/false-positive-file-form.php they are pretty efficient for these cases most of the time ;)

Really impressive game, especially for being developed by hand in visual studio! I love the unique concept and the simplistic graphics. Although the was only a small story it fit the game very well and made it that much better. Great work, hope to see you in more jams to come!
