Pacific Parkour League (PPL) by alexpritc

[raw]
made by alexpritc for LD 40 (JAM)

Pacific Parkour League (PPL) is an extreme 3D first person parkour platformer game. Complete the difficult parkour levels (marked by red flags :triangular_flag_on_post: ) with a crazy amount of momentum.

The more momentum, the harder it is!

It is my first Ludum Dare entry, so I really hope you enjoy playing it. If I decide to develop it further, I'll add my own art. This was also my first time experimenting with audio in Unity and decided to record my own Ukulele strumming.

CONTROLS:

Move: W, A, S, D

Look around: Mouse

Jump: Spacebar

Restart the level: R

:warning: EDIT: There is a bug I am aware of where the player can fall out of bounds. I have updated the file with a fix. If you still experience it or any other bugs, please let me know! Thanks! :warning:

Fun Game! Too bad that you can fall out of bounds, but great game anyways!

On the third lvl, after I went right and fell very near to the exit the game didn't reset for another attempt. Fun game though, and it's just hard enough to keep it interesting.

Interesting concept. I wish the controls were more responsive though.

There's a very common trick often used for such games - adding a jump possibility timeout. When a player steps over a ledge, there's still some time to press the jump key. I think it's much needed here, as I often managed to step over the ledge and fall. It seems that currently it is necessary to start jumping far away from the ledge.

Also, in the first level it was confusing when I was able to just run over the gaps. Maybe the gaps are not necessary there?

P.S. It would be even more interesting to see something like this but with Trackmania-style gravity-defying roads. If you're not going to make it, I might just do that myself.

@snake5 Thanks for the feedback!
(The first level is meant to be like that because the idea is to keep running, if you stop running you'll fall between the gaps or if you jump them one at a time it's a lot harder). Thanks for the gravity-defying road suggestion - I'll give it a go!

oops sorry, didn't see that my keyboard was not in the right mode : you see, if your game makes me wanna tryhard it at the point wher ei have to change keyboard language, it's a good thing.

A little sad that you chose a sea ambiance, because your game is nervous, fast, for kids like me who liked jumpcraft in Minecraft 6 years ago it's really addictive, and you could have throwed a sick eurobeat song, or anything quick, or at least a jazzy ambiance if you wanted to do a constrast with the rapid actions you can take.

The controls could be more responsive and permissive too, sometimes sick moves are a little too hard to do because the character (who can turn his head 360, left right up down it was fun to try the game with head reversed) goes too fast in a direction too quickly. But that's balancing , and for a jam game it's quite frankly cool. Plus it makes for the tryhard-kind persons (like me) a need to finish a level, so it shows that your game works. Nice ! :)

@lautregars Thanks for the detailed feedback! I might add an option where you can pick which music you want to have playing: so it can be upbeat for tryhards and calm/relaxing for others.

I'm glad you enjoyed it, even with there being no limit on how much you can turn your head! Haha :D

It works now! I like the concept and it was fun to play, but the mouse controls are wonky and you don't lock the mouse. I wanted to play more but I just couldn't because the mouse controls didn't work very well.

Still GG

I had a great deal of difficulty with the jumping controls. You might want to look up what "coyote time" is.

I like these types of games! This was pretty fun. If I could suggest, maybe a crosshair in the center of the screen.

**Fun:** The game's strongest aspect. The game is pretty fun to play.

**Innovation:** The gameplay seems like copied from minecraft parkour.

**Theme:** I don't have anything to say about this because not all people really care about theme. XD

**Graphics:** I think the game really lacking in graphics. You can try learn 3d modelling in Blender to make some nice low poly graphics. :)

**Audio:** I have nothing to say about this.

**Humor:** No humor.

**Mood:** No mood.

**Controls:** I think you can add "Cursor.lockState = CursorLockMode.Locked;" line in Update().

Overall, the game is pretty fun to play. I hope that you can try to improve your skills later on! :)

It would be nice to have some aerial control. Not too much of it, because I understand that the momentum is the theme of the game, but at least some.

The ocean setting is nice, refreshing for a challenging game. I'm pretty bad at parkour games - I couldn't get past level 2, but got really close a bunch of times. I always wish I could restart from the platform I fell off instead of at the beginning. Or, if I could switch on a mode like that.

Fun, and very hard, but I'm just terrible at parkour games. Good job though!

Pretty fun game although I think controlls are a bit bad. I guess that's more or less the idea of the game but it's a bit slippy. I think it's too frustrating but still good game. Some graphics would be great like some 3D models. Just using simple cubes scaled are simple although effective.

That was a pretty neat looking game. I had a lot of trouble with the controls, but I don't know if that was just because I was bad at it or something else.
All in all a really nice entry! Keep up the good work!

Really fun game! However, this is really not the best game for me, I'm so bad at jumping. At every single game. I am so bad. Timing the jumps, etc, bad... Still I liked even though I tried soooo many times.

It's got a good premise, the parkour is a good mechanic. I didn't see the connection with the theme though.

Although I'm not the best, the controls were a bit hard, specially the mouse. I'll give you the same advice that was given to me in my game: lock the cursor in the middle of the window and lock the mouse in the game. Also, maybe hide the cursor too.

I feel like for this fast paced game, some background music was missing. Something with a retro fast paced vibe. Also, some sound effects like breathing and puffing and making effort would add to the experience.

The game will also benefit greatly from the art you create. It doesn't need to be anything too fancy/complicated, but right now it feels a bit empty. Nothing that hurts the game though.

Overall great concept, had fun (in spite of my poor skills), great work. Hope you continue to develop it :)
