Book Crook! by Ossi
"You find yourself with the opportunity to steal some of the most sought after magical books in all the land!"
You must fill up your stash with books until you are out of space! Afterwards you will see the total price of all the money you made along with your Top 3 books. There's randomization with the shelf and stash sizes, books and book names so replay it a couple of times to get different results!
Controls: Mouse Only, just point and click!

Phew! I managed to finish just in time! I'm pretty happy with how it turned out even though I didn't get to implement everything I wanted. I wanted to get a timer in there and a button to respawn the bookshelf so you can be more strategic in what books you take. Other than that I'm super glad I managed to finish! Thanks for playing!
(Mac version not tested so if it doesn't work or there are bugs then, sorry!)
Software Used: - Unity 5.6.6f2 (Game Engine) - Bosca Ceoil (Music) - Bfxr (Sound Effects)
Edit: Added a WEBGL version of the game.

There's just not a lot I can say about this one. The titles are funny? ('A Guiding Write', 'Heroes of Flight an Panic' indeed.)
Props for including options to toggle music and SFX (separately even), though!
@pomb I thought about putting a tooltip indicator giving you a sense of how valuable your choices were but I settled on just color coding them for the sake of time. The brown ones are the cheapest and have the smallest random price range, the blue ones are expensive and have a more consistent random price range, and the green ones have a price range that varies wildly. Thanks for the feedback!
@mrjorts I really enjoyed the idea myself too! I really wanted to have it be more more action based with your choices but alas the time constraint. Thanks for the comment!
@remco Yea, I wish I had time to add those two features in. I always seem to go with the randomization of silly names to put more amusement into the game and counter-balance the "just clicking on stuff" vibe. Thanks for your feedback!
I feel like this could have been much more with a bit more time! Good job
@karlipoppins Unfortunately with the randomness it's almost impossible to get enough cheap books to have them in the Top 3. They were meant as a way to slow you down but I didn't get around to adding the timer. Thank you so much for your comment!
@dark-roast-studios Yea, more mechanics were planned but alas the time constraint got me. Thank you for the comment!
@caeonosphere Books are amazing! I shall check out your game later, thanks for the comment!
@r3c0d3r If I could have managed to get the timer and shelf respawning mechanic in then it wouldn't have come down to just taking all books. Thanks for the feedback, these are really good ideas!
@gwinnell I just got a web build up. My first time using the new WebGL stuff in Unity, I always had a rough time with it before. If you get a chance to play it let me know what you think!
Graphics were nice, the audio was pretty good, liked the music =). Book names were funny too. Played the web build, worked great!
For now it's, as you said, purely random. There's no challenge whatsoever.
You'd need for example a lot more shelves to choose from, and need maybe something to find out the type of book which takes a bit longer. Currently I'd simply hover the mouse over all books, and then pick the good ones first.
The presentation is ace, just the game needs a bit more added on.
Sound effects and music were great.
Try our game too, maybe you'll like it)
As such, I found the game to be rather boring, and nothing else really stood out to me.
But still, congrats on finishing the game and entering the Compo for the first time! It's not a bad entry at all, just one that I felt was flawed. Take it as a learning exercise and build up from here!
@candlesan Yea, the total is calculating the total value of all the books you've collected. Thank you for the kind words!
@t8kk There is no lose state, you just try and get the highest price you can. The cheaper books and the swiping to identify the book's value were intentionally there to slow you down but since I couldn't get around to adding the timer it's ultimately pointless. Thank you for your kind words!
@awix Thanks for the comment! I shall try your game later!
@el-metallico The value of the books are decided by color which are shown on the title screen. The prices themselves are a bit randomized and I didn't have enough time to show them as you collect. Thanks for commenting!
@jsmcag You're right, in it's current state the game is pretty thin and entirely random. I like the idea of having book thickness play a part. Great idea! Thanks for the feedback!
@aplite Scrolling books/bookshelves sounds like a great idea, never thought of that! Yes, I wish I had more time to get in the timer at least. Thanks for the feedback!
I like the concept of this game, but i agree with @incobalt.
For example, to add challenge and offer a real choice to the player, the game could offer the player a number of small shelves of books (the number would be known in advance, but not the content); then, the player should make a selection of what would seem to interest him (in terms of rarity) among the books in the first bookshelf, then move on to the next, and so on, until the last or until his reserve is filled; he should not be able to return to a shelf already visited. It would thus risk either not to completely fill his shelf, or to no longer be able to select books offering a better rarity.
@incobalt @bismark So many good ideas, thanks for the feedback!
Keep up the good work!
Liked the little tune :). Good work!
My initial impression was that the books' worth would reveal itself and hide on mouse over, and that I would have an amount of time before the shelves I was stealing from would switch out, bringing in different books to trawl through. It seems however that I can just mouse over all the books then pick whatever I like in order of green, blue, beige until the shelves are empty and a new set spawns in. I like what you have here - well done for including music/sfx options too  - but the game seems to feel a little flat. With some extra game mechanics layered on top it would be much more interesting to play.
All of this I am sure you know already from other comments, but it helps to receive as much honesty as possible. With all that in mind, I'm gonna give you a follow on here, and then look forward to checking out what you make in the next compo/jam. Hit me up any time if you ever want more feedback. Cheers!
