I love how interacting with menus is typing and how the level's keys get pushed in when you press them on your keyboard, I would suggest possibly changing the menu interaction to typing it out and when it hits something not there resetting the typing because i ended up typing retry a lot but having to press r again to turn it back on again because to retry you technically need to type rety.
The only issue I meet is: "When you die and have to type RETRY... you actually need to type RETY or RETRYR"
Nice job!
Retrying could be a bit quicker. I like the idea of the menu in principle, but it gets a bit tiring after a while. Also, I'd like an option to retry during the level when you know you've already used too many jumps.
Double jump is very weird here like @sekwah41 said. If you press space twice quickly, you go very fast, but if you use it at the top of your jump (like you normally need to in games) you don't go high enough. This might be a mechanic, but it's not explained and actually got me stuck for a little while.
I do like how pretty much everything is a keyboard key, it really has a nice theme going.
Also cool that you added the source code even though it's a jam game by the way! Not going to use it myself, but it's a cool thing to do anyway.
On the downside, I'm not fan with the pixel perfect design, and I'm not sure whether it is possible to beat level 4
I think the music loop could be made more seamless. That said, however, I really like it! I think the sound effects are well done, too.
You took a more creative route with the theme, and in my opinion, you did well at implementing the idea into the gameplay. I think it's somewhat innovative as well.
The level of difficulty was just a little too much for me, and I couldn't make it past level 4. The jumping was tricky at first, because I didn't realize that double jumping sooner would make you go higher. If you made the fourth level just a little easier, I think the difficulty would be more well-balanced. All that being said, I had fun doing the first few levels, and I even enjoyed attempting level 4!
Overall, I like this! It's a neat little game and I think it has a clever interpretation of the theme.
Loved the first level, liked the second level, and I found level 3 very frustrating
Some constructive feedback:
· RetryR? (you already know won't further elaborate, but was frustrating)
· I believe some visual feedback on when you can or can't use the space anymore would help the game feel way better. The worst issue I found ( and mostly the only one ) was that I couldn't manage my spaces comfortably as I couldn't tell when I could or couldn't make another succesful jump. I literally died 25 times on level 3's first row's last jump because I thought I couldn't jump 3 times.
Overall nice concept, and funny idea :v:
@manusaiz @nam-nguyen @grahhhhhhhhh @oriondark7 @stroe-andrew @sekwah41 @fractalsunrise
Pros :
- Fun concept, and great take on the theme
- Visual identity on point
- Catchy chiptune background track
- Excellent level design
- Limited number of jumps gives a puzzle vibe to the game
Cons :
- Floaty controls make for a steep difficulty curve
Overall, great job !
Nice chip tune for the music, and I love the foreground tiles pressing and depressing with your keystrokes.
I feel like thanks to having exactly the number of jumps you need on some of the levels, it forces pixel perfect jumps, which can be somewhat frustrating. Also, it would be nice if each options activated with just the first letter (which can be indicated with an underlined letter) rather than having to type the whole word.
Good luck, Don't forget to take a look at ours if you don't mind and see what it's like when we just focused on graphics in this game jam!
