Food Chain by Jessé Santana

[raw]
made by Jessé Santana for LD 43 (JAM)

A game about kawaii food sacrifice.

Controls

  • Click and drag the candy to move them around. That's all. 2018-12-04_01-51-51.gif

Gameplay

  • Candy from the same color as the barriers will pass through them, the others will be killed. 2018-12-04_01-48-37.gif
  • You can sacrifice candy to open the barriers that are controlled by the frying pans. To do so, the candy has to be of the same shape as the one on the pan. 2018-12-04_01-46-14.gif
  • Barriers without frying pans can't be opened.
  • The levels will not be finished until EVERY candy are either "dead" or "victorious".
  • Press the "retry" button if you think you cannot go through the level anymore.

We didn't make many levels but I hope you get the idea and have fun!

Change log: - Fixed a minor bug where the text tip for the fourth level was never being shown.

Good
- Solid game with high polish
- Great graphic design matches well with music
- The sacrifice mechanic is quite unique and forces players to think a little

Could be better
- Not sure how the join/unjoin mechanic worked

Very cool, would've loved to see more levels to explore the mechanics and their consequences more, but it's still great fun and very interesting.

@nkrim Thank you! Yes, we would love to have more time and go deep on the levels too. We will probably work on this after the jam ends and we get some feedback!

@kambing Thanks for the nice feedback! You don't know how much it mean for us, we loved doing this \o/

And actually there is only an "unjoin" mechanic, there is no "join" (not through the player). When we first thought of the mechanic that was something we had in mind but it was too difficult to make it understadable (like: would we make the player click both hands to join them? would we make it by distance? would it be clear for the user?) So we decided to not implement it. Maybe we will think in a good way to do it later. If you have a suggestion I would love to hear it!

So cute! I found the controls a little annoying with their bodies blocking me, but other than that I had a good old time! XD

@jesse-santana one suggestion I have would be to make everything snap to an isometric grid, so that you can be precise with the movements. (think Snake?) Theres many times where i dragged something and it accidentally exposed a poor candy to the wrong line and it died.

This was a great little puzzle game! Concept feels pretty original. Art is cute and music fits great too. Would probably make a great mobile game. Definitely see potential here.

Hah, the animations and everything are so great! Dragging the candies around feels great, though it was a little strange to me that I couldn't get the chain of candies into the goal all together, and had to drag each in separately. That's a minor thing though. Apart from the fact that I'm now guilt-ridden about candy murder, I'm quite pleased with this little game. Bite-sized puzzling, not too long, and well polished. Nicely done!

it was morbidly funny to watch all the other food smile and laugh while you burn one in a frying pan. congratulations on the first jam together.

I like the idea, I think with more levels you could really flesh out the mechanics. Although I thought it was a strange game at first, the tutorials were really helpful. Good music, cute art, and a fun mechanic. Job well done.

Really great! Simple but challenging. Dragging the candy around looks and feels really smooth. The color palette and art style are amazing! Hate watching those tasty looking little cuties get left behind but sacrifices have to be made haha. It was a little short and having to drag each candy individually into the winning area was a little annoying but very awesome stuff. Great work!
