Scrap Yard is a fast paced arcade game. Your goal is to survive by pushing enemies into the walls that constantly close in. Grab power-ups, watch your health and get a high score!

STutorialCard.png

Controls: WASD to move, left click to shove enemies into walls (You can hold left click to charge the attack) Power-ups spawn at the top of walls. Throw an enemy at the wall to knock it down. There are 3 types of power ups: - Overcharge (Blue lightning bolt): Makes all of your shoves more powerful for a short time. - Health (Red Cross): Heals the player to full - Expansion (Green Arrows): Pushes all of the walls back

Tools: Blender, Unreal Engine 4, Ableton Live 9, Photoshop. All blueprint code, music/sounds, animations and models were made during the jam. If you want to see more of my work, head over to my website: https://www.candlebird.com/

Hope you enjoy my first Ludum Dare game!

Bug Fixes: - 8/14/18 5:05 PM - Fixed default sound to be 100% instead of 0% - Fixed overcharge recharge timer from not resetting after time expired - Added the "Return to Menu" in pause menu

I really liked this! It incorporates the theme really well, the models and animations are all really well done (Especially like that boxing glove robot), the way powerups were delivered was nice, all around great concept and great execution. For your first LD, this is solid!

My one criticism would be, for a game about shoving people into walls, it didn't feel very 'juicy'. It would have been better, in my mind at least, if the robots flew faster away from you, and maybe exploded or shook the screen on impact. It's a purely game feel thing, but it could have made the whole thing a bit more visceral.

Still, good job, one of my favorite games to come out of the jam so far :D

I had a lot of fun shoving these robots into the walls! I think you could dial up the movement of the walls a little to increase the feeling of running out of space. Very unique and innovative gameplay. Please explain what all the power ups are and what they do, maybe you did and I missed it somewhere.

here is the segment from my stream with your game! https://www.twitch.tv/videos/297300090?t=01h36m58s

@sciman101 Thank you so much! Also, yeah, I know exactly what you mean now that you say it. I'm not that good with particles or effects in general. I know what I'll work on practicing before the next Jam!

@tigerj Awesome! Glad you liked it. I totally forgot to explain the powerups! The green one pushes out all the walls, the blue one overcharges your shoves, and the red one heals you. I'll update my controls section on my ludum page. Thanks for the heads up!

This was so much fun! the mechanics were simple and easy to understand - it made me want to keep playing. I wish there was music in the background, and perhaps some more varied enemies, but I really enjoyed this game. Good job!

@jktransformers Hey, glad you liked it! There actually is music, but I think there's a bug that makes the game default to muted. There's sliders in the settings. I wish I caught that bug!

Hey! Its an awesome idea! I like most of it, a only think that the walls might move a bit to slow.

Awesome!

Great game, love the animations and the design of the baddies too. Agree with @tigerj where I would love to see the walls close in faster. And maybe a grab and turn at the same time so you can sort of aim/pick the walls you wanna throw them into. But that might throw off the gameplay.

A good game idea, the music should be improved. The graphics are good.
Try our game too, maybe you'll like it)

Thumbs up! Great FPS take on the theme. The idea is well-executed and you can understand the rules without any difficulty. I love the enemy designs and how each one looks distinctly different from each other. The small pushback adds a good deal of oomph to your attacks. I found it a little difficult to tell when I was taking damage. I think some screen/hit effects on impact would feel pretty good with the rest of the mechanics.

@rodrigo-molina Yeah, I was debating on whether or not to speed them up. It looks like most people who play the game also wanted a speed increase. Thanks for the feedback!

@shane Thanks! I worked hard on animating and modelling those guys. Also, I never thought about that! That would be a great thing to add if I decide to take this game further. I could add it as an alt-fire on the right click and make it propel the enemies a much shorter distance.

@Awix Thanks for the feedback! I did end up rushing through the music in the last 6-ish hours of the game jam. I wish I could have done more!

@happyhour Thanks! I agree, because impact effects are not my strong suit. Glad the rules were understandable! I was worried that I was making the game too complicated for an fps arcade game.

Thanks again for all the feedback everyone!

Great job! I had fun playing it. Like others, I think the pacing could be sped up; more enemies could appear early on. But I'll admit that I would feel different if I didn't have a ton of other jam games to play and rate.

Second to that, more visual and audio feedback for everything happening in game would enhance it the most. Sounds for enemies dying (I think the sound I hear is them spawning?) Little red arrows indicating you took damage and from which direction would be great (camera shake too!) And I had some trouble judging the range of the shove, but I'm not sure what you could add to best convey that. Maybe a short, little shock wave on the ground?

Cool game! I now suddenly enjoy pushing robots into walls! really god job with the animations, they look really fluid (for robots)! my highscore is 52930.0, beat that!

Very good enemy designs and concept.
I also wish that the walls were faster, since I couldn't tell that they were actually closing in. I also didn't realize that I was taking damage; I thought the enemies were also just trying to knock me into the walls.
Good job!
