RunnINN out of space is a tetris-like (inventory management) and JRPG hybrid.

During the day, heroes and merchants are going to come to your inn to stay for the night. It's up to you to decide who can stay and who must leave, as long as you have enough place to store their inventory and beds for them.

promoLD42Jam02bcd.gif

Merchants will pay you a lot to spend the night safely in your inn. Knights on the other end won't pay much, but you will need them to defend you inn at night !

You will be attacked by monsters at night, the RPG phase. Better have a couple of knights to defend your inn ;)

How to play

Press Q or E to rotate the item

Press A & D to move camera

Mouse wheel to zoom in /out

Left click & hold : drag inventory items

Updates

Been able to work on the game all Monday so I switch from Compo to Jam since I got time to compose and add music, SFX, animations and most importantly, implemented a stats based JRPG combat mechanic** :D

You can still download my 48 hours compo version here

Code, game design, graphics, songs and sfx all conceived by myself @gamedevklingon

This is a solo jam entry, I needed the extra day ;)

I'm still working on the game for a post jam version, I'm most likely streaming on Twitch right now if you want to comment in chat ;)

* If the UI seems weird, please play with a high resolution (1920x1080 if possible !) *

Super fun and addicting. Tricky speed game with strategy on multiple levels.

Very cool. Hard to see on a smaller screen. Text and everything gets crowded and makes it hard to select things... or that is intentional....Very addicting though.

Interesting fusion of two genres here. Definitely shows some potential

Really nice game, a bit buggy in the fight process (UI covers the buttons) but the idea and the realization is very very good, nice graphics and atmosphere, nice one!

Thank you very much for trying my game ! I'm working on a post-compo version with an UI fix. I initially developed it with a 1920x1080 resolution. Lower than that is causing issue unfortunately. Should be fixed by tomorrow :)

Personally i love concept "develop at day and defend at night". But combat something boring. Anyway its a great idea. Develop it after jam too.

BTW, did you know that there are cool techno music on his Twitch channel?

Interesting game idea. I like the "tutorial" on the floor, drag and drop mechanics works well, neat simple graphics. I'd love some sound in the game!
I guess your take on the jam version with more RPG stats is probably the right direction!

I also experienced the GUI being on top of the fight explanations (on a high resolution screen), but it didn't hinder me to fight.

Just uploaded my Jam version of the game, switching from Compo to Jam. I added a lot of stuff today :
Music & sound effects
Animations
A stat-based jrpg combat system using HP, attack power and element weakness
more tetris shape
Resolution bug fix @folex70 @kiotikid @artbohr @mshopf

Thanks a lot for playing and precious feedback ! :)

Very fun idea! I liked the tetris/management part more than the battle, it was difficult to understand and the UI was bugged in the web version at least since it doesn't scale down in smaller resolutions, but I see you are aware of that. The artwork looks okay, I feel it could have looked nice if the objects and characters were designed keeping in mind the camera angle. If they were in the right angle, like isometric top down, instead of front and flat and then put in a 3d world it would have felt nice.

Really cool idea! I played for quite a while. It's sorta cathartic trying to fit everyone's gear in storage as efficiently as possible. One issue I ran into though was that I didn't notice any way to increase the time limit, which made purchasing more beds a poor choice after a certain point. I really liked the rock-paper-scissors mechanic which incentivised you to recruit a diverse group. I had a lot of fun, well done!

All was too fast I did not had the time to have one rich 4 enemy attacked me. The only way to play was to place whatever I could. I did not run out of place but of time. The only way to play was only getting warriors because enemy wave was too random. But I thing maybe it was only me.

This game is a really fun combination of mechanics! As many others have said, the time becomes an issue far sooner than space. Can't really say I ever ran out of space. The only other issue I noticed, is it seems highly randomized. The number of enemies and quality of heroes various enough where you can lose just on bad luck, especially at the beginning. Still a very fun game with a catchy tune.

Pretty good game, maybe a bit easy once you get enough beds to keep two knights of the same element but it's still a great idea to implement the rock paper scissors mechanics. Maybe letting the computer choosing randomly the monster that will fight your knight would make the game more intense ?

Anyway keep working on it, it could become really enjoyable :)

This was a fun and addictive game, I hope we can play more of it in the future! The Tetris music is nice and the pixel art is good. However I think that the merchants with 6 chests are a bit annoying, they run fast and since the chests are so small you can often misclick. I think it would be better to be able to directly grab the closest tetris peice using a hotkey. Also there should be some wait time before the combat starts. It keeps preventing me from getting that last adventurer/trader. But overall it was a very fun game, a lot of potential here!

Fun combination! I like games where you also have a logistical role as well as combat. It would be cool to see it expanded after the jam. It would be nice if right-click rotated the pieces? That way it could also be played with only a mouse.

Awesome! I played the compo entry first and had a few complaints, but then I played the jam entry and they were almost all fixed! I love how use sounds and color changes to make it clear to the player when something happens. Visual and audible feedback are some of the most important things that people tend to skip in game jams. I'd add even more though, such as a slight color change to the block you're hovering over, or a little sound when you select a unit during battle. But hey, as a solo entry it's really good!

Some more nitpicking:
- Having the text on the ground like that is a bad idea. It's difficult to read, and you don't give me any time to read it because the knights keep coming all the time. Make a simple tutorial or just display the text on the whole screen before you start the game.
- When the day is over you should make the player automatically drop the block. You can place blocks while the camera is moving, which feels a bit like an exploit.
- Use more bars and colors, and use less text. When I'm looking at a unit's stats I just see lots of text. Replace "HP" with a bar on top of the stats box, "ATK" with a sword and "Stay" with a bed. Same goes with the "Time left" at the top right corner during the day. I'm too busy looking at the incoming blocks to see that tiny text in the upper corner change. Make it a clock instead and make it bigger and at the bottom of the screen.

I think that's pretty much all of my complaints. In general, though, I'm really impressed with the game. For a solo project you've put in a lot of work. I actually ended up playing this one for almost half an hour!

By the way, I also made a tetris-like game for my entry. Would be nice if you'd check it out :)

One of the really good ones! I love a game that gives the ownership and entrepreneurship feel and this one gave it to me :)

The switch from inn management to fight arena was really annoying though and I wish the transition was smoother, it killed me every time I was dragging that last gold chest :D Also, the UI was a bit confusing.

Overall, Great job :)

This game was a little hard to figure out and play, could use more from a tutorial stand point. But it was very fun and clever once you got into it. And I really liked the art and music!

The look of the game is amazing, and I know you had to have come up with a lot of this cuz I can't really think of any precedence for it haha. The way you integrated the UI into the diorama world looks great, and I ESPECIALLY love that you threw your name and handle onto the grass as well (and tutorial!). I like how the battle world is in the backyard of the inn, and that you never actually leave the scene. Everything here is cohesive and again, feels like a nice little diorama. Great ideas here, very inspiring!
