The Forgetful Cube by wrimo

[raw]
made by wrimo for LD 42 (JAM)

The Forgetful Cube is the first game I have ever finished. Being so, it is not that great of game. It is a 2D platformer about a Cube who is 'running out of space' in my brain. He can only remember so many skills at a time or he will start to forget past one. It has some Metroidvania like elements such as finding new abilities and allowing you go backwards to find secrets rooms. Be sure to explore levels carefully because many levels have secret rooms you can find. WARNING: this game has bad programmer art. I did use some art made by someone else, so it isn't all bad.

Seems like a fun game, only the movement at times is VERY frustrating xD

Some level are quite good, some other are hard (the "42 room" is nice). Would have been cool with music. Sometimes, the character bounces on things, it's weird.

Second level made me rage, but I got passed it to the spike level. I was getting the gist by the 3rd level. Not bad.

@chocolat-endive I was actually going to do some music, but I was exhausted and didn't want to figure out how to make the music work well across scene switching. I am not sure what caused the bouncing (I haven't experienced it myself). Thank you for the kind words.

Congratulations on your first finished game! I really enjoyed the gameplay - unfortunately I ran into a crash when entering the first room that's only accessible via triplejump, so I wasn't able to finish. I also enjoyed the self-referential humor. Get Danny Wallace to do your voice acting and you've got Thomas Was Alone 2: The Forgetting (;

@pace Is the room you're referring to the one on Level 2? I forgot to test that one.

I got the larger jump and went back and above the wall, but when I went to the next level the game got sort of glitched and I couldn't seem to effect it. That is, my character was not on screen at all, and nothing I did changed anything. Here's a screenshot:

To the point that I could play, I enjoyed the story and how it was told. Otherwise it was mostly a solid platformer, although the level with all the cubes is somewhat difficult to get past because it seems like if you take the bottom path you can't jump up high enough to get to the door?

One relatively trivial piece of feedback I have is that the "next level" door says next level even when it takes you back a level. I guess "next" is somewhat meaningless in a branching game but it still is a little strange.

@themonsterfromthedeep Thanks for your comment. Was that Level 2 or Level 5 (the first one with the enemies) where you encountered the glitch? About your comment on the level with the cubes, there is actually a way to get up from the bottom path, but it might not be obvious if you haven't playtested the game dozens of time :wink:. About your trivial piece of feedback, it bothered me too, but I was too busy/lazy to work on it. Also, thanks for calling it a solid platformer.

It was the same thing that @themonsterfromthedeep ran into. I got the triple jump, backtracked, and went up to the alternate path, then ran into that screenshot. I don't know the level number but I'd guess 5.

I really liked this game! It TOTALLY reminded me of Thomas Was Alone. Literally the exact same idea, but that's a good thing to me lol. I enjoyed it.
