D34TH by Falk Bruskeland

Gameplay
You play as the robot, D34TH, which is a killing machine. You have to kill everyone on sight. Beware that D34TH has limited power, so you have to charge him up before the power runs out.
This is my first time I am participating in ludum dare, and I am pretty proud over what I've made. Of course, the game isn't perfect. There are some bugs here and there, especially when you kill someone.
Controls
- Left and right arrow to move.
- Z to shoot and select in the menu.
- X to jump.

The levels were interesting but I only got to see a couple as I kept dying :)
Great job though, very fun.
Nice game you've got there, maybe you could only have one power bar instead of power + life. The graphics were ok and the floating jumps made combat against policeman more interesting.
Don't really like the jump though
Sorry for the black borders on the side!
* There are explanations,
* This is graphically very good and consistent
* The sounds totally match, I would have like a little music but it works like this
* The controls are smooth, hard to manage to avoid the bullets but this is my problem, not yours haha
* I got stuck at the (apparently) last platform of second level, didn't know where to go ^^
* I didn't kill the villagers, nor all the policemen and the game does'nt care; I like this freedom BUT, is it why i've been blocked ? If so, I still like it but it needs to be mentionned haha
Thanks for the fun, be proud of you !
Keep moving forward.
That was really fun :) could not get passed the second levels end at first but the I did the same as in the video gameplay and voila!
-I didn't like the placement of the jump button. Personally, I would have switched the recharge and jump buttons, or better yet, allow the player to customise the button layout.
-It gets a bit hard, but mostly because of the above control issue. That's not an issue in and of itself, but having to do the easy start of the level each time I die gets a little grating. Adding checkpoints mid-level would help mitigate that.
-If you were to continue this, more enemy variety would be cool. Both the player and the enemies were only able to shoot sideways, but I would have found it useful to shoot in more directions. You seem to have been trying to make things a bit tricky, so a few other enemy types with their own quirks would achieve that and also be more interesting for the player.
-Make a bleepy-bloopy fanfare tune when you beat a level! :)
-One thing you may want to consider is making shooting bullets cost power. If you were to expand the game with more levels or whatever, you might want a scenario where you want to penalise the player for just spraying bullets to teach them to be conservative with them.
I didn't get past Level 2, but I watched your gameplay video and the rockets in Level 3 are kinda funny. Not even remotely fair, but there are plenty of games that pull off the "rage-inducing unfairness" thing pretty well. If you want to go for that angle, then go the whole hog! Add platforms that open under your feet, for example.
I also didn't encounter any bugs (or at least, nothing too noticeable), which is a huge bonus. This is a really good first Ludum Dare, great job.
You seem to be able to skip past the enemies pretty easily however - not sure if intentional. If I try to kill them, then sometimes - because the timing of the jump (without holding) matches the timing of the enemy gun reload rate - I would land my jumps next to incoming bullets multiple times (because I'm an idiot) causing me pain, and ultimately death...
All in all though, a great first entry!
It was a bit confusing for me to use x and z first but after a while I got it.
However, I couldn't really get used to the Z and X control, and I feel like the game is cheating because if I jump towards a point, the police shot in advance before I get there so I have to take a hit which is annoying.
I also seem to run into a bug? where I cannot proceed to the next level at the end of Level 2, I die and try again, still same issue :(
Very well done though, the game is challenging to play.
One downside to it is that i don't really like the control scheme.
Finished it but the level are not easy, which is great.
Graphic was really nice, sound was good aswell.
However in my opinion the power(yellow bar) going down was not very impactfull. I always could just refill to full mid level. Maybe it would have better to limit the uae of the recharge platforms to one use each, as currebtly the running ut of power theme is a small and kinda not impactfull part of the game.
AI also met the bug in level 2, the same as @jackyjjc.
Only thing I would fix is the difficulty, found it a bit hard, but that's just my opinion.
Anyway, good job, can't wait to see what you'll make in your next Ludum Dare!
The graphics are quite good and the controls are very smooth. I didn't like the jump arc that much and wished there was some way to manipulate the character's falling speed while in the air, but it worked and made the game more challenging.
This is one of those games that I wish had some background music, because just hearing the jumping and shooting sound all the time gets a bit monotonous.
Overall very solid entry. Great work.
I felt thoo like the z and x was a bit weird but nothing hard to get used to ^^
keep up the good work mate! ^^
Same with the sound, 3/5.
It's not very interesting take on the theme but it's servicable. 3/5.
Innovation is 1/5 because it's very generic game.
Fun despite the difficulty and the rockets which I thought gave a cheap death, it's very fun to play. 4/5.
Humor I did laugh when the cops just decide to drown themselves. 3/5.
Over all 3/5 good effort.
The sounds are effective and so is the pixel art. Nice and clean.
The only gripe I had with it, is not knowing what to do sometimes. The next level menu took me a few tries to understand. And I'm still not sure how to go to the next level after the first fire-pillar hurdles. I didn't get the level-menu. So sadly, I couldn't finish the game.
I wanted to play more so that's the most important right? Good game and good first try!
A better Terminator sequel than any of the new ones :3 .
Congrats.
- Graphics are super great
- The physics are neat
- The levels are cool, I love platformers so you won a lot of points ;)
Hope to see you on future LD events
But speaking about the theme, running out of power, I have died many times from many things except running out of power
PS: The QWERTZU build wasn't working for me, neither Z nor Y worked but the QWERTY version was surprisingly well to control anyway :)
I also like that you have to hold, instead of just touch to really recharge. I'm less convinced of the need to separate power and health-bars though, they feel too similar: does it really add much to the game to have them separate?
**EDIT**: @coomzy The *z*, *x* combo is because they're right next to each other, easily (on a QUERTY keyboard at least) reachable for the left hand. That won't work on an AZERTY keyboard (and a whole slew of others), so that's why you sometimes see *x*, *c* instead, although that has it's own problems. Really games should just have configurable keys, but that's often too much for the limited time we make LD games in.
**2nd EDIT**: @falk-bruskeland Oh, just a small request, but could you maybe not make a zip-bomb (compressed file without a top level directory) next time?
