PotatIO by Ash Duong

[raw]
made by Ash Duong for LD 39 (JAM)

In the near future, the surface of the earth is ravaged by an apocalyptic event, causing humans to have to live underground. The situation is rough and living standards are low, but with your family's secret potato recipes, perhaps you can save the day.

A survival game in which you live by the potato and die by the potato, farm and use them as batteries as well as currency to further your dream to save the planet.

Many things to like here! Quite a funny concept, and I enjoyed reading about the different spuds! :)

I found the game a bit too slow / repetitive to really enjoy however, and unfortunately it took me a long time to understand how to play it (despite reading the "how to play section"). I even had to restart 3-4 times before I got it; and the only way to do that seemed to be alt+F4 and start the game again?! There also seems to be a UI bug where the marketplace recipes overlaps with the potato recipes, which confused me a lot.

However, the graphics (especially lighting) worked well, and the sounds / music were spot on and fit the gloomy concept of the game. Overall a very cute and inspiring little game. Well done sir/madam :)

A very calming game to play. Once I figured it out I quite enjoyed myself. I only wish the camera could scroll and the few issues I had weren't there.

Both market and recipes open up at the beginning for me. And when I try to purchase a glass bulb I get a potato wire instead.

Overall, beautiful and relaxing. Placement and harvesting could be faster. I felt like this sort of game should be possible to have on the side while I do other things.

This is a really neat game. I love the aesthetic, and the clean UI. The music is also relaxing and adds to the gloomy mood. The sound effects are satisfying, especially when your potato grows bigger. It can be a little slow and I wish there were a quicker way to plant and harvest the potatoes, but otherwise an amazing piece of work. Nice job!

Loved the fun facts about potatoes! Nuking the planet with tons of potatoes was great too. I didn't think I would spend an hour today growing potatoes.. but I sure did. Good job!

Your game looked very visual to me so i've been attracted, also by the potatoes because yummy <3

I had to try several times until i discover that potato-battery hidden in "recipes" and then i finally managed to make something with all those bulbs (but not enough each first tries to create a lemon battery so i couldn't figure it out).
I'll definitely play again ! This is so relaxing but sometimes how frustrating (like when i died from hunger xD)

I really like the graphics and the sound design! It creates a very relaxing vibe, perfect for potato farming. There are a few quirks, which have been mentioned, but one thing in particular stuck out to me. After retrying a couple times in order to learn the mechanics, the game quickly ceases to be about resource management, and turns into an idle game (when you get the lemon battery). I don't think there's anything wrong with this; the atmosphere is perfect for the genre. This might, however, be off-putting to some players. Regardless, the humorous story, clean graphics, and lovely sound design makes this a very enjoyable game. Keep up the great work!

Pretty beautiful twist on the "clicker" genre! The art was absolutely beautiful, with all the lighting and particle effects. I wish that big red button really did click down, though! I loved the cute story and the music, as everybody has been saying. I wish there had been a pause button because it was so easy to get myself into a position where I could not plant any more potatoes at the start. I had to restart like 5 times. Building on that, I thought the game was a bit too tough at the beginning, especially if you haven't watched the tutorial.Still, very cute and great work!

Awesome entry! Very well presented, with a lot of visual effects and sounds for every action. I wish I could recollect the planted spuds, because sometimes I miscounted or misclicked and got no energy and no spuds to craft. I wish I could reuse the wire too.

Great concept and funny execution :) i loved the very quiet atmosphere and the fun spuds facts brings :] A bit hard to start, i would like to had some instruction/game over/retry button at first but dumb retries were part of the fun too :] great humor and mood, good job :)
