Zombies Hate Fire... by Windowwasher

[raw]
made by Windowwasher for LD 42 (JAM)

In this highly original zombie survival game you must stay alive long enough to get rescued, but that won't be easy as the rescue fire has also attracted the undead who will stop at nothing to eat your brains and put out the fire.

Controls * WASD to move around * Left click to fire an arrow or use an item * Right click to pick up or drop lumber, metal, crates, and barrels * Spacebar to jump

Goal: Survive long enough for the rescue meter to fill up. However, the zombies will continue to pour in and and take over the space. As they do, zombies will break away weak floor tiles to open up new avenues of attack.

To keep the zombies at bay you must fight them back with your bow and use lumber and metal to barricade doors throughout the level. You can also distract a group of zombies by placing crates and barrels in the zombies' path.

You Lose: If the fire gets put out or you die

Up to 3 pieces of lumber and metal can be used to barricade a door. The more lumber and metal you use the stronger the barricade.

Additional lumber and metal will heal the barricade and the metal doors at the start of the level. While holding an item left click to heal a door or push zombies back. Wooden barricades can be passed through by the player making it easier to get around.

Happy the download was a zip instead of rar but should use the name of your game in the download. It helps locate the file in the download folder next to the other dozen games called build.zip

Esc is a bad idea to close the game. As its expect that esc opens a pause menu.

Game pace feels really slow, zombies are not that aggressive and spawn in large waves. This sorta gives the impression of the theme but with the large map it doesn't work well.

Graphics could use some work as well but understandable they are low end.

Other than that ok start of something.

The building of barricades did not really feel (ironically) that constructive, as if you think in terms of zombies spawning per second vs zombies dying per second, barricades do not make any difference and really just waste time you can be spending killing zombies. Perhaps a better mechanic would be if you could place spikes on doors to damage any zombie that attacks it, or if zombies can be crushed by other zombies if they are trapped by a barricade (which would be a good application of the "running out of space" theme).
Aside from that it is a very satisfying shooter, especially being able to down zombies via a headshot with the bow. Maybe multiple arrow types would be cool? Like a fire arrow that sets zombie on fire (with potential to spread to other zombies).

I liked the shooting mechanic, it was satisfying to shoot the zombies when the arrows stuck to them. Considering the amount of zombies I would have preferred if I had some alternate methods to kill them, like traps or explosives. Alternatively if there were far fewer zombies, but they moved a bit faster so each zombie was more dangerous.

Regarding the graphics, you did a good job with the 3d models and animations, its a pity you didn't have time to add more textures, even with just simple colors the game could have looked pretty good.

It was satisfying sitting back and shooting zombies. It is genuinely pleasant shooting, seeing the arrows stick out and aiming for the head. As the others said it could definitely use more mechanics to fend off this massive hoard of zombies. But this is really well put together!

Loved the ragdolls and that headshots are an instakill, might be better if you just slapped some solid colors on the models so we could see the arrow and bow better and to easily track the trajectory of our arrows.

Overall I really enjoyed the game. I felt like because of some combination of their slow move speed, high spawn rate, and size of the level, That success in this game comes down to did you prepare for that final 25% of the rescue bar when they overwhelm you near the end. It took me three play through to survive.

One other thing i noticed is that you can board up a door and still pass through it yourself. Not sure if this was intentional or not.

Also I think the way they all bunched up in a nice neat row seemed a bit orderly for zombies, so maybe adding some variety to their movement path (assuming they are coded with waypoints?) would help them feel more zombie like.

Decent game it's just that it gets a little unfair when zombies are somehow able to attack the cracks on the ground through walls. Good entry!

Well done. I liked the bow and arrow as your weapon and the sound effects were very good (although a sound when you hit a zombie would have been nice). Overall you did a really good job putting this together.

I seemed to be doing well (maybe 2/3 of the way to the end?) until suddenly I lost because my fire took a bunch of damage in a short period of time. I had no idea where the fire was, or that I even had to protect it at all :\ If you develop this further, you should give the fire more importance--maybe it heals you, or maybe you can light your arrows in it, or maybe it's more obvious when it gets attacked early on so you know to defend it.
