Shifting Dreamscape by Cruise Elroy

[raw]
made by Cruise Elroy for LD 40 (JAM)

Shifting Dreamscape is a game about sleep. It's a wonderful thing that lets us experience our wildest dreams, but let it get out of hand and those same dreams may shift into horrible nightmares...

This game was created in 72 hours by Cruise Elroy (@cruise-elroy) and Mors (@mors) for the 40th Ludum Dare Jam with the theme "The more you have, the worse it is." Special thanks to Cosmic Gem (@cosmicgem) for the music.

Controls

Arrow keys - Move, sleep

Z - Jump

Changelog

v1.1.1:

-WebGL it's now required to play the game because otherwise, the game is pretty broken.

-Fixed a death loop.

-Changed a miscolored block.

-Prevented getting stuck in one area.

v1.1:

-Fixed a small level design oversight in the 8th screen.

-Removed some tiles we forgot to remove in the 11th and 14th screens (they already didn't have any collisions).

-Prevented going to left on the first screen.

-Fixed getting stuck in a loop after dying on a moving platform.

-Reduced the time it takes to die in Eternal Slumber, it was way too easy to abuse.

-Fixed the music getting paused after switching phases.

-Fixed a typo in the code that caused cool birbs to turn into monsters in the "Unpleasant Dream" phase instead of the "Disturbing Dream" phase. Whoops!

v1.0:

-Initial release.

I really liked how the sleep mechanic fit into the platforming, and how it tied into the theme/mood of the game. I thought it was very cool how the world became more nightmarish as you spend more time asleep. Great job!

Awesome game! I thought it was really cool in the Nightmare mode. I didn't see that coming =P

I had a very hard time with the wall jumping (but I'm also not a fan of platformers), but the sleeping was an interesting mechanic in the game. The art style and sounds were very professional.

This is a solid entry! I loved the mechanic of using sleep, but not being able to abuse it. I think it's sad when the blob falls into 'eternal slumber'. Very sad game over sequence.

Loved the way the game "degraded" as you went. Kinda tough!

Not sure if this is on your end or the website, but when I first attempted to play everything was so pixelated that I couldn't make out words. Perhaps a bug? Anyways, great game! I wish the keys were mapped differently but I love the look and feel of the game, congrats!

HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLY cow. This game is really incredible. The amount of polish is insane. The art is really, really cool - and you definitely had me shaking in my boots as the game progressed. Fantastic job.

Hot dang this is well put together. You deserve plenty of kudos. Wonderful gameboy color aesthetic, great mechanic, simple but elegant, and I love games that appear cute and cuddly but hide darker undertones. Keeping this one downloaded on my machine.

Really cool and original. I love how the music and atmosphere is so sunny and joyous at the start, and it warps to get more and more "off". Really cool effect, extremely well executed. Gave me the feels. One of the best entries I've played so far.

so cool. Did it take long to put together all of the different layers?

Really cool idea and well implemented, though the controls felt a bit harsh at time (too much inertia I believe)

Looks great! Graphics remind me of Kirby on the NES. I like the creepy 'hand trees' too!

Really, really neat concept that is very well executed. While I wasnt the biggest fan of the controlls (to unprecise in my opinion, especially the walljump) everything else was really great =D

Polished as heck ! A great game concept ! Cute graphics one time, and creepypastaed the other ! Maybe the controls could be improved a little (gets a little smoother) , but very neat !

I love it! Beautiful art and level design. Only thing I didn't like is the controls, i think they are not direct enough.
Great work!

One of the best game I've played here. Greate retro-gameboy-mario style. Music also awesome. Concept is really nice and blends well with theme. Overally very good game. I think you could even release it! Very good style.

The difficulty was too hardcore for me... on my second try I made it a little past the second candy. I find this style of wall-jumping unintuitive... maybe if the wall-slide was slower I could wrap my brain around it better.

I dig the kirby-esque graphics and setting though, and it was fun seeing the environments and even dialogues change. Good job.

Again, it's one of those games that let you forget you play a Ludum Dare entry. It feels just like a real NES game! Well, no, it doesn't really, because it degrades to creepiness and that was quite unexpected (didn't look at all the screenshots). Great twist. To me the wall jumping felt a bit unintuitive and some jumps next to spikes were really hard. But it was manageable. The graphics and music are absolutely stellar. Great entry!

Lovely graphics, fantastic mechanic, beautiful soundtrack. I really enjoyed it, wish I could restart after dying (am I doing something wrong?)

It was quite challenging but fun, really good job on this!

Great concept, on my first run I slept too much and took to much time to complete the rooms, that was not a good idea

I died on my second attempt one screen after I was told the end was close, so disappointed

I will give it a third go later to finish it ! Nice work :)

I'm just in awe, the theme works so well with the gameplay. Also love how the environment and audio change as you progress. Well done!

The game is a solid entry. Love how the sleep mechanic changes the environment and the mood of the game. However I think the game is quite slow. And I found a bug in the eternal nightmare when I jump up a platform on top of the screen and get stuck. Anw great entry. Check out our game in my profile. Cheer mate

Very cool! I love the way that the environment changes depending on the dream state. I did encounter a game-breaking bug where I jumped and then took a nap and was thus trapped inside of one of the platforms. I tried sleeping more to get out of it but the platform wouldn't disappear.

13 days after first playing your game, the song still gets stuck in my head from time to time. And I played it only twice! Amazing work there! It's so catchy and pushing and dynamic. I love this song!

Great gem here, thanks for this one, really enjoyed it! Though a bit more candy throughout the world would've helped against this nightmare'ish experience :P
