Suicide Rabbits by m3rcurial92

[raw]
made by m3rcurial92 for LD 43 (JAM)

screen4.png The purpose of the game is to reach the red button on the other side of the map, but it will not be easy. The deaths of your fellow rabbits, however, will be useful! Who will succeed in reaching the goal?

Controls:

  • WASD or arrows to Move
  • Spacebar or Z to Jump
  • ESC to return to the title screen

UPDATE 1.1

  • All collisions have been revisited, for a better and less unfair feeling of play
  • Added an Easy Mode
  • The mine explosion area has been added (in Easy Mode is persistent)
  • Added a dynamic overlapping to some graphic elements
  • Redesigned the symbols on the signs, for greater comprehensibility
  • Added new patterns in the Original Mode, for those looking for a more difficult challenge
  • The spikes have been redesigned
  • Some bug fixes

UPDATE 1.2

  • Collisions bug fixes

A little hint: - "some obstacles may have different positions when you start a new game"

This is my first participation in a Ludum, and I've made the game with Stencyl. I hope you enjoy the game and give me a feedback!

Have fun, m3rcurial92!

I like the concept, it was a little frustrating though. But overall, fun!

Nice game, very cute!
It was hard to tell how big the trigger areas were; I kept dying on the same mine.

Congrats on completing your first Ludum Dare. A member of my game dev group uses Stencyl and it's a great engine for this kind of thing.

I really enjoyed the music to this game. The controls were also easy to understand. But as I played it, I found it a bit frustrating to be honest. I couldn't tell what was killing my rabbits. The sign at the beginning of the level looked like an arrow at first saying "go this way." But after playing, I'm guessing it's a mine field warning. Though I'm not entirely sure how to avoid the mines. I tried going around and jumping over them only to lose about three or even four rabbits to the same mine. It felt like the mine was not located where the dead rabbit lay. Which would make sense if it got blown away, but even in that case, I couldn't remember where the mine was. I felt like "I've definitely jumped over it" or "I'm definitely at least one lane to the right of it" only to lose another rabbit.

I'm not sure how long the level is, but I just got past the first river before running out of rabbits. Maybe after a mine kills a rabbit, the mine should be destroyed. Then on subsequent playthroughs a dead body or ghost of a rabbit still hovers over that old mine. That would be consistent with the theme of needing to make sacrifices but wouldn't annoy the player with losing multiple rabbits to the same mine. I know the description says some obstacles have different positions when starting a new game, but in that case I don't see how the game could be cleared.

Again good job on a very proficient use of Stencyl for your first Ludum Dare.

Nice game, you have the mood down very well. I failed twice on the minefield though, and got to the river with no idea what to do on the third time. Other comments have said things about the trigger areas, but it could probably be solved by increasing the amount of rabbits (or making it infinite).

All the cute little rabbits died :(
This game is very difficult. The artstyle is great, and I love the take on the theme,
giving the player a limited number of rabbits that quickly dwindle down.

Thank you all for the comments!

By realizing the game, I probably didn't realize that it could be frustrating to have no idea of the range of the mines. Maybe a small tutorial section would have helped.

I also realized that the sign of a minefield wasn't very clear, in an upcoming update I will redesign it.

Art style, music, and controols feel very pleasant but difficulty is not very balanced. Invisible obstacles are not fair :/ But for your first LD its quite good

well done, simple and fun. I made rabbit game called Fluffy Horde on Ludum Dare34 and things went well for us. Your bunny game is very charming and I hope things goes good for you as well.

This is a really cute game! I gave it two tries but never managed to cross the water, a bit too difficult for me

Neat game! It had a little too much trial and error for my taste, but the cute art and the good peaceful music made it easier to bear through.

I love the detail of seeing your fellow bunnies before you control them, and it really fits the theme how their sacrifices helps show which area to avoid. Great work for your first LD!

"The game is 100% respectful of the environment and no tests have been carried out on rabbits, only people have suffered in the making" @sky

For everyone else: I'm thinking of implementing an easy mode that can make it more accessible to those have found it frustrating. I keep you updated, thanks to all the feedbacks received until now!

I liked the game a bunch, reminded me of the Cat Mario game that was popular a couple years back. The music being so calm was pretty funny against the game. Only tip I'd have is to maybe make the background less repeating so its a bit simpler to mentally mark where obstacles are.

Cool idea and nice mood (love the contrast between the calm of the piano music and the mine explosion).
Maybe it is a little bit frustrating but once you started it becomes a challenge and you want to get at the end!
Nice game considering that this is your first ludum dare entry! :)

I found it very frustrating going back to the start again every time, it felt like you'd lost even though technically you hadn't. Nice music and art though and good use of the theme
