Parking Spaces by Imphenzia

UPDATE: As the rating days are coming to a close I'll take the opportunity to show what is becoming of my original entry Parking Spaces! It is now more or less a fully featured Android game to hit the Play Store within the near future. I am going through and learning the publishing process with this game :) Check it out:

I was on holiday for Ludum Dare 42 so I wasn't able to dedicate much time this time around but this is what I came up with in about 8 hours.

Instructions

  • You control car with red outline.
  • Use A/D or Left/Right Arrows to steer.
  • Use W or Up Arrow to "commit" to a parking space (you can no longer control that car)
  • Don't let the car crash into one another or into a barricade.

Hints: Car will pick suitable space itself (front / back row) but make sure that the car in front intends to park longer than the one behind. The timer on the car states how long it will park. Make sure to allow cars with trailer/caravan and lorries to occupy two spaces or they will crash!

What's your highscore??

@cg-fred thank you - the page was still in draft apparently so only I could see it! Now it's published - thank you so much for pointing it out!

I had the same link problem lol. Just played it and loved it. Very simple and a ton of fun! I really liked your music, and you said you only took about 8 hours? That's impressive!

Thanks @x227man - glad you like it. Well, I didn't include the time that I spent on the boat trip thinking about the game so the 8 hours was actual development time (inc. music, 3D, and coding). Plus another hour to compile and upload on top of that. Being such a simple game I it's not much code and I also cut corners on not implementing music/sfx volume control and stuff like that :)

Super nice concept! Love the mood and graphics. Wish there was a way to cheat with special abilities or something, because at some point it just seems impossible to fit another car in. Good work!

Very nice game. I liked the concept and one needs to think a bit with this game.
Overall I really enjoyed the graphics and the simplicity.
Very Good job.

Great game, simple concept but still fun and challenging. Loved the song!
There seems to be a bug where cars sometimes randomly crash into each other when they drive away, it happened a few times to me while playing which is sort of annoying.

Nice game. The bigger vehicles are hard to see until too late but otherwise a lot of fun.
Please check out our game.

This is a really cool game. It's only annoying that you can't see the trailers ahead of time, I think you should be able to see the next piece coming.

@meatpudding - thanks for the tip, I will add that for the post-compo version, was just debating what to do about that since you may want to launch the cars fast into a slot. Just working on some new cars now for the next version of the game =) Wish I would of had more time during the weekend to begin with.

Nice game. The trailers are tricky, but I don't think that's bad.

Don't forget to rate other games!

This is really well made. It took me some time to get use to it, but I eventually started to get the hang of the system, and I must say it's really fun. It's also a nice space and time management game that fits well with the theme. Great work!

Simple, but enjoyable. How about a 2p versus mode?

So here's a gameplay question, what's the reason for anyone wanting to actually drop the car quicker than just letting it drop naturally? The countdown goes only so fast, and dropping it will only speed up your demise. The only exception is to "rush" them through open booms. You also have no idea when the booms will come down so it's a bit of a random toss up whether your sending them down there will lose you the game or not?

So if the optimal play in the game is to not do anything... That's a design problem?

Also placing a higher number behind a lower number is instant lose, yet the player must play on unless they manually reset the game themselves?

It's not a bad premise but there feels like there are a bunch of design problems that would make the game feel better if solved.

Thanks for the feedback guys! @tuism you touch on some important parts that I try to address in the post-compo version.

The booms i implemented so you could let cars pass if the parking lot was full but they operate on a timer interval which isn't apparent to the player. My original idea would be to have booms open and then close for a duration after you are forced to let a car through - that behaviour would be easier to grasp I think. I believe som playersmay even think they get bonus from driving through booms so that definitely needs fixing :)

The speed commit of a car has no impact on when next car appears but it serves two purposes: when you commit a car you can start controlling the next one which may appear befor the first one has parked otherwise. The second reason is that when you commit a car you can save a few seconds if the next car needs a slight buffer.

I also noticed that the will to play demises when you realize you parked a short stay car behind a long one... any suggestion to fix that would be appreciated :)

I am frantically working on a post-compo version now:

I don't quite understand: Committing a car doesn't make the next one come faster, but you can start controlling the next one (which did not appear faster because you committed). So again, what's the advantage? Committing doesn't make this car you're controlling count down faster, it just means that all other cars didn't count out more seconds while this next one arrived earlier than it would have?

@tuism ok, if you control a car and another car spawns behind you, you can't steer the car until the one you already control parks so if you commit a car it switches to the new car so you get to navigate to its best slot. In the new game I will try to play with and without commiting, maybe I need to adress that better.

@tuism you may be right, just tested in the new version and commiting has no obvioys benefits, especially when the cars are now moving faster. I think that I will do so that when you commit you see the duration for the next car a bit ahead of it appearing so you get the benefit of planning placement better.
I also thought about the issue about waiting for doom if you park short term behind long term so maybe long tap on car to wheel clamp it may counter that issue - with limited clamp attempts.

I would recommend trying to changing the core mechanics to resolve the issue rather than adding more stuff you're expecting the users to have to deal with.

Very good and simple idea!

You could show the next car somewhere in the GUI and highlight it's "lane" to let the player know where it is.
To solve the short-term-behind-long-term issue, the player could pay for a tow truck (then your score should be the money you earned or something else). Or you could enable the tow truck ability after N cars have successfully parked.

Cool game! Definitely an idea I haven't seen yet before, and very well executed. I haven't tried your improved version, but the trailer makes it look awesome!

Very pleasant and addictive little game :) We spent some hours with a friend and couldn't beat a score around 3000$ Good job with the music that is not annoying after hours of play. visuals are quite neat too, definitely one of the best games i've played so far. That is impressive for about 8 hours of work. Also the competition seemed like a good idea :)
