Tetrikaruga by gre

made by gre for LD 41 (COMPO)

Tetrikaruga is a mashup between Tetris and Ikaruga bullet hell mechanism.

You can absorb bullets that have same color as you but if you touch another color, this is game over. There are 2 colors and you switch between them when rotating the Tetris brick. Game difficulty escalates over rows.

*Innovative*

*Great Music*

1090 high score. Really like being able to move pieces up and down at will too, really different experience from regular tetris it's cool

wow, really amazing game. The only thing that would be cool to have on this game is that when you touch a bullet you lose control of the tetris block and it just fall on that position, this has a bigger tetris feeling and the player could continue playing and fix that mistake instead of instantly getting a game over.

Nice game, your tetris part was nicely implemented, especially in 48 hours. The added extra of the bullets made it much more challenging. You music was excellent as well.

Man, that was a really cool take on tetris, I really liked it. Plus the music and graphics came together nicely as well. Can't believe this is a comp game - nicely done!

Amazing concept. Probably my favorite genre mashup so far! The rotation color-swap mechanic is genius. And the fact that you can absorb bullets to clear them out of the way is very useful. The whole thing works so well. Very challenging, but also a ton of fun. I especially love how the music changes seamlessly when you rotate pieces.

I wish that the tetris aspect was a little bit more fully-featured. A "hold piece" feature and a "next piece" display would have helped. Also, the ability to rotate left or right would have been very useful for the L, J, and T pieces. It also didn't seem like the game properly implemented the "bag draw" system for choosing tetris pieces, or the bonus points for double, triple, and quadruple line clears. But the bullet hell aspects were very polished, especially since this was a compo entry!

I managed to get a high score of 2700 points. Those bullet patterns get really challenging once they start moving at different speeds!

This is really good, and manages to get to the core of both genres without simply aping them, and mix them together juuust like a proper cocktail is done.

Nice idea man! Did you make the music with 2 instuments and swap between them to get that nice effect? My eyes were little bit distracted between the tetris and the moving orbs which became quite tricky to follow hehe. I like the overall idea, if you somehow can put both movements vertical maybe that could work somehow even better? Overall nice work and fresh idea, good work gre!

Excellent application of the mashup. Nice touch with the music change with the color. I like how rotating the square piece actually means something now. Gotta dock the innovation for being straight up Tetris though, but the combo was good, so it cancels out.

@T8kk yes exactly, there are 3 song loop that played in sync. one background (for the chords basically) and then the melody is done with 2 instruments and then it smoothly switch between them when you rotate the piece. code is quite interesting if you want to look (WebAudio context): https://github.com/gre/ld41/blob/master/src/game/audio.js

I was planning to develop more gameplay but was running out of time so I focused on polishing the simple stuff I had in ;) happy you enjoyed!

This was a clever idea! The mash-up works really well together, and the audio is a nice layer of polish. Adding the ability to tap the pieces upwards was also a good idea; I feel like it would have been much too difficult without that.

Great job!
