Running out of Space by ZozeR

header.png. Hi, This is my first Ludum dare game made in Game Maker Studio. 3.png

R.o.o.s. is a top-down shooter with a twist, which is whenever you fire the space you're on will shrink and a random planet will appear which will act as a barrier for your movement or any kind of a blast.

I think you can say I took the theme too seriously.

If Normal difficulty is too hard, you can switch to Easy difficulty in the options. (which will reduce enemy quantity, boss hp, and removes the player's planet spawn)

A really neat idea! I liked the mechanics (though it took me longer to grasp it than I would like to admit to admin), but the spawning of obstacles at each shot feels a bit weird. More often than not did I shoot in a clear direction and a planet spawned directly in front of me, stopping the shot.

I played V2. Such cool cloud visuals tho overally graphics weren't so coherent.
The game was quite hard for me; I couldn't pass level 2. Spawning planets didn't worked so well as a mechanic but it's such an absurd idea so I loved it. It was fun, good job!

I played V2 too. Very cool animation, when I restart the initial sprite for the space changes as well. My only comment is that sometimes the wall appears to be there but I can still pass it. I also like the intro a lot. I would rate it by V2 and - .5 for overall, great job putting it all together!

I have played both versions of the game so far. My biggest issue is with the difficulty. Normally, I like myself a tough as nails game, but I think this game could feel a lot more fair if, perhaps, the projectiles were made to be more visible and the laser-beam enemies had some kind of indicator for the timing and length of their attack (because they often damage me while they're off-screen and I can't see them.) Otherwise, I adore the weird aesthetic to this game and find the concept quite interesting. It's still fun, but I can't get past the second level, but I'm also a bit tired.

Thank you guys for the great feedback. Because of the complaints about the difficulty, I added **Easy difficulty** with the new update, which changes the enemy quantity, boss hp, and removes the player's planet spawn.

You can check more about it [here](https://zozer.itch.io/roos/devlog/45643/update-v120) or [there](https://gamejolt.com/games/roos/362378/devlog/update-v1-2-0-b4mauvdk)

(played V1)
Great concept!
Needs a little polishing, but it was very well made.
Sugestions:
-Keep things visible (as other have mentioned, more contrast between environment and projectiles / enemies)
-Add a delay to when things happen, i mean, not fun when a planet appears right in front of where you are shooting. Seriously, it happenned to me like 3 times in a row, making it impossible to advance.
-"dark matter" (the places you can't walk) collision is very unclear, maybe you could make "walkable" areas with a lighter color

graphics are good, the music was too. Good job!

Good game, neat concept and good execution, esp on v2. I noticed you aren't allowing scoring on audio, I really liked the music in V1, was that something you had done?

I liked the game overall.

The visual effect of this purple mist closing on you is really good. Some enemies are well designed and the boss fight was a blast ! Also, the cthuluish enemies that narrow your gamefield are really good.

However, the difficulty is a bit too high, especially because of all the off-screen enemies that can snipe you. And the fact that the mist get thicker when you shoot makes this fast-paced shooter a little less... fast-paced.

That's a great and neat jam entry :) Really well done !

Intersting mechanics with the small ball to shoot to regain some space. The difficulty is a bit high, specially since you never now if your shots will actually fire or be stopped by the planet you create at the same time... Really cool graphics with the purple cloud!

Hey !
first of all I'm quite sorry, I'm getting really bad at these sort of games so I couldn't finish it :(

I first tried your jam version, then tried the V2 to actually see what you added in game !

First of all, the game's mecanic about running out of space is nice ! Concept is easily understandable and the game responds quite correctly to it. I liked the graphic chart you used (quite Chtuluish, as someone said in the comments section, I feel like this is indeed the main inspiration), and eventhough you didn't make the music, it suits well the game.

I feel like the game is really hard, but in a cheap way and not in challenging way, I'll explain myself on this :

- The idea of random planets popping when you shoot is quite weird. Sometimes it just pops somewhere and .. voilà ! But sometimes it just blocks my path. I read your description and I know this is actually intended, but that's really cheap ! It blocks the player's path and just act as a punishing random feature. I'm pretty sure you can turn this idea into something more interesting and good for the player to play !

- Some monsters, especially at level 2, are really tedious to play against. I'm talking about these laser guys who snipe you from the other side of the screen. To avoid them, I must keep moving, which is okay since it's a shooter, but then a random planet blocks my way and I'm screwed ! Thus dying like shit :D I don't know if other players experienced this, but it felt really random and ungrateful no matter how many times I tried.

These are my main two complaints. You made a good job creating this game in 3 days, I also love how the game "flows", which is why this idea of planets popping up really bores me. The game is quick, tense, and I really like the way you designed the pace. Good job !!!

@aszu I tried to make every sprite to have different noticeable colors. Some might appear to be hard to notice but that was in mind when I made them.
I strongly suggest you to check the V2 because it has much better graphics, and more polished than V1.

***

@rik-thunder I nerfed the eaters(laser guys), I will publish it in the next update.

***

@rexpeppers if you're talking about the sfx I created them using [bfxr](https://www.bfxr.net/), audio isn't allowed because soundtracks don't belong to me.

***

@demn If you switch to easy difficulty player won't spawn planets anymore, however, if easy mode is too easy for you, check out the extra level maybe? or tune in for the next update because there will be changes.

***

thank you guys, I am trying to make the game more enjoyable for the people, your feedback really helps!

Congratulations on this first entry! Very nice concept, though quite hard to play through at first. (I played version 1 in order to give a fair rating). As you've pretty much added what was missing in version 2, I won't enumerate those again here.
Cheers!

I like the mechanic and your take on the theme but having played only the 72h version, I find it hard, and sometimes just plain impossible to beat. It seems that when you shoot a blackhole, the free space is randomly generated and sometimes, it didn't allow me to continue. So you can get trapped without any other option than to kill yourself, that's a a bit sad. But for a first time it's awesome and though I don't find it particularly fitting the space theme, I love the music you chose :)

Nice work! In my world hard is good. Really cool implementation of running out of space. As others - i found it unnecessarily annoying that a lot of the planet spawning happened in front of a shot, but that's really the only negative. Oh and i like the outside space shader!

Nice game, really liked the mechanic and the way you implemented the theme. It was a bit hard for me in the beginning, but I got it after some tries.
