How much are you willing to sacrifice? by Ridderfar

[raw]
made by Ridderfar for LD 43 (JAM)

This is John. Being John is hard. John is part of an experiment. He doesn't really enjoy being part of the experiment, but that is what being John is all about. Being willing to sacrifice. John sometimes thinks about spending more time with his family. John doesn't have a family, but he would like to spend time with one. Instead he is spending time on expeiments. It's okay.

John is part of a new experiment. The goal is to examine the importance of audio and visuals in videogames and to see what happens when you remove either or both. As usual, John is willing to sacrifice everything.

Developers note: This game is really hard. Like really hard. The game consist of 7 levels. Every time you finish the level, you have to choose between sacrificing part of your vision or hearing. The goal is to win the game while being completely blind and deaf.

The game is made by Anders Poulsen, Jeppe Emil Lindskov, Mads Riddersholm, Mikkel Isak Anttila & Rasmus Thorup. All code, art, sound, music and other assets are made by us, except for the character controller which is made by Martin Fasterholdt. Thanks for letting us use it Martin.

We hope you enjoy the game and please provide any kind of feedback! Thanks.

edit. V1.2 includes checkpoints and various bugfixes

Finding out that the lasers and platforms were linked to the music was such a pleasure, and brought some real complexity and unique sound queues. I loved it!

This looks so cool the detail to the light brings this game life and the level design is so cool great job

Good looking jump and run game. Just the hitboxes feels a bit to big. Sometimes I died where I thought it would be the perfect jump point.

Visuals and synchronization with music is awesome. The problem is not the difficulty itself, but lack of checkpoints - it is kinda annoying to spend a minute walking over the same obstacles. Also floor obstacle colliders are quite large - they trigger even when i'm visually not standing on them.

Very solid submission.
Pros-
Music in sync with laser and obstacles was very cool
Good take on the theme
Cool environment and mood
Cons-
Sometimes lasers were placed out of view so you would have no idea they were there, and then you would be killed and have to start all over which was a little frustrating.

After the 5th time or so that I died due to obstacles I felt like I hadn't encountered and / or learnt about yet and I was teleported to the start I gave up playing. I'm not going to subject myself to this degree of repetition. Sorry. I really liked that the music was there to help navigate the level, though.

I love how the whole game is in sync with the song but i have to say red platforms have strange hitbox! For the rest i really like it! Good job

Liked the visuals (the mixture of the 2d sprite and the 3d background/level). I really enjoyed the gameplay, but the lack of checkpoints made me eventually give up. I did try for almost 20 minutes, but I couldn't even reach the end game before sacrificing sound/visuals.
I might try again later today as I really want to complete the challenge, but for now I need a bit of break from this.. I did enjoy my time with it though! Thanks for making it! :)

Great visuals, a bit too difficult.

Oh man, I was so on board, and then you lost me.

Brilliant use of music, and wonderful level design, particularly in how you anticipated the player's movement (and used camerawork) to so perfectly tutorialize the "hop during the beat" section into the "fall quickly" section. Just aces all around.

And then you fall, and with no apparent warning get vaporized. I guess I'm supposed to fall into the middle part so I can watch the laser?

Can a brother get a checkpoint?

Very cool idea! I like the visuals and the idea of synchronizing audio with obstacles was great! I miss checkpoints and I have a feeling the character dies even though his foot are not yet on the obstacle
