DONNIE_VR by internetpaulicy

[raw]
made by internetpaulicy for LD 39 (COMPO)

Donnie and his car VRCar are on the run. Will they escape or will VRCar run out of fuel again? VRCar is low on fuel... does Donnie have the skills to make it through? Collect as many fuel cans as you can and watch out for all the cacti!

This is a simple auto scrolling driving game with a retro style. WASD to move Q and E shift down and up respectively. SPACE for when you really need to slow down and get a fuel can.

I deliberately made the handling of the car responsive.

NOTE: there is an end to the game. So there is a special surprise for the dedicated player. Your progress is in the middle just like Rad Racer. Enjoy!

Fun game and retro and drifty achieved. Maybe also intentional but if i press w to much teh car almost disapears of the screen maybe put a limit how far you can go to the front?

Damn your game looks nice, a little hard for me but great!

I made Minor Jump, and you asked me about how the level is generated:
There are 10 areas of 4 platforms of height each, each area has a difficulty attached to it, areas are added as you progress through the game and the highest you go, the more difficult the new areas are. As you reach 6000 of score, you only encounter the three most difficult areas.

I found it quite difficult, but then I'm not great at games anyway. I love the graphics and it felt very good

I like the art. It feels straight out of a retro arcade. Especially the glasses sound effect. I found it really easy to drive off of the screen. Is that part of the game?

The game looks good, but it is hard to play, because horizontal speed is not enough. And I didn't get where VR here. Is it joke? I made VR game on LD for real and I'm looking for similar cases.

Nice game with effective retro graphics! It would be good to have some kind of scoring mechanism, but otherwise fun!

First of all: I thought I recognized the visual style so I checked your previous LD-entry and behold; I also played that one :)

Great visual style! Simple but striking, it really fits together very well. For some reason I really liked the square particles.

- It would've been nice if there was some 80's/synthwave music in the background ;)
- The camera angle is too steep. When a cactus or jerrycan comes into the screen it is too late to steer towards it. Another solution would be to make the car's handling a bit less slippery.

But overall a very nice and slick entry!

If you hold onto the space bar you slow down significantly. You can hold it as long as you like. Your handling will increase and you can get almost any gas can unless it has gone too far down the screen already. The idea is to shift up to go fast and see more gas cans. If you see one *hold* space and slow down to get it. NOTE: there is an end to the game. So there is a special surprise for the dedicated player.

Very cool aesthetics. I wish I could see the cops and keep away from them, didn't feel like I was being chased. Also I must have gotten some bad luck but I definitely played a round where I ran out of gas because a canister never spawned, something to tighten up. Also with those sick 80s aesthetics really could have gone for some cool music.

Indeed @joemag. Unfortunatly I barely had time to make the bleeps and boops that are there. Perhaps I can call up Lazerhawk.

The graphics are amazing on this one. All the art style just boosts the theme of the game. Really nicely done.

Looks promising. Adding some new retro wave soundtrack will make it sound great. The car is hard to steer, can't pick up properly the fuel or switch lanes. Great implementation so far.

It's fun. I like the graphics, though with the car's handling/inertia it almost felt like it should've been a speedboat on a river instead of a car, or maybe a skiier. Still, not too bad.

Donnie is a free spirit. He's a drifter.

Very good graphics and audio but controls need a bit more improvement. Also, I felt like the camera should follow the car a bit. But otherwise very good job :)

Good graphics. Bad gameplay. The car does not want to turn.
