As a tyrannical king, you must defend your realm from invasion by raising a massive army. Attack the villages to keep them in line, but don't kill so many that they can't keep sending food for your growing army. When you attack a village, prisoners will be dragged to the castle to be sacrificed, keeping the village too scared to fight back. If the villages rise up against you or the invading army defeats your army, you lose.

UPDATE: The game was unbeatable due to some debug values being used for some variables. This has been changed now.

UPDATE 2: There is now an experimental web version of the game. If there is an issue with the web version (such as no audio playing), try the desktop version instead.

It took me a second to figure out what was going on, but really liked it. The invaders always kill me. I suppose I'm too mean to the villagers haha. Def gonna play again and try to win. Nice work!

Couldn't quite find the balance that would keep me alive for the invaders. Like the concept though!

The description of the game here on the ludum site helped me to better understand the interactions of the game. Congratulations on the result, by the way, the player's fortress sprite is fucking amazing!

Really great pixel art, especially in the intro. Audio is great too, although is seemed like there could have been more sound effects. I wish I had a better idea of exactly how the balance between killing and food was going. Without visible indicators of some sort, it was impossible to tell how I was doing until the invasion ended or a rebellion began. I'd love it if it was something subtle, like more guys with pitchforks showing up as revolt was stirring. I could see myself spending a good bit of time playing a more fleshed out version.

Found it a bit tricky to play. Nice original concept though. Nice graphic style too - intro very cool (reminded me of oldskool Amiga game "Powermonger" I think)

I played the web version with no issues. Sound worked fine.

I had to play it 4 times before I beat it. Trying not to let the villages grow too much. Hard to tell when the tipping point is, but if it wouldn't be a challenge if there was a strong indicator.

Fun little game. I especially loved the minimal pixel art graphics, and how satisfying it was to send the soldiers at the village before the arrival of the invaders. Some kind of metric hinting at the victory conditions would help a lot though.

Pros :
- Simple, but fun controls
- Beautiful pixel art
- True "battle feel" thanks to the sound effects
- Great take on the theme

Cons :
- Victory requirements unclear (when are the villages too depleted ?)

All in all, great job !

I like the little banners as indicators of allegiance. However, I couldn't find how to apply the instructions' rules. I only managed to kidnap villagers once per game. Whenever I send DARK KNIGHTS they usually are killed by PEASANTS. That, or I just destroy that village's productivity and can't recover it in the long run. But it's usually the former.
