BugStorm by leon75

An RTS game, based off of the idea of Netstorm. I had a lot of fun learning new stuff on this really strict timer, especially pathing and grid based building. As I would've expected, making a game of this scale, I had to cut very many features I wanted to make. In this game you must prevent insect hives from spreading across your last surviving floating islands by destroying the Mother Nest.

Build bridges to the Storm Geysers and collect crystals with Golems Build a siege army to destroy the insect threat! Cannons can only shoot airborne targets, and the trucks spawn flying soldiers to attack ground units.

Controls :

Build bridges to Geysers and use Golems to collect money
WASD to move the camera
Left click to select and place buildings,
Right click to order units/unselect building.
Number 1 and 2 to quick-build bridges.

There is only one level in the game, all assets were made during the 48 hour LD compo period.

Tools used: GameMaker Studios Paint.net Audacity

Source file is as a separate download in the itch.io page.

Really well done, although some menus would be nice.

The atmosphere was on point. I liked the voice acting, too.

Nicely done, the base concept is pretty well layed out. Unfortunately some base mechanics of the game were broken for me. For example I could not figure out how to obtain more currency to buy stuff. I assumed at first that I would get some by killing the bugs that were flying my way but that did not drop any. I played around with all of the spawnable objects and after 5 minutes I figured out that I needed to click on them and then right click to make them move. They got swarmed by the bugs and killed instantly. Some form of on screen tutorial would fit nicely, even if it were just a basic text box to read at the start.

@2lol555 Thanks! Yeah that mechanic isn't very clear, you need to build bridges to the floating geyser rocks, and then tell the humanoid golems to collect crystals from there.

Cool little game. I couldn't figure out the main mechanic with the bridges myself, so had to come back to the comments here to get what I needed to do for the golems to work. Overall cool entry, with some more guiding needed maybe.

I beat the game and must say this is impressive for a 48 hour compo. The atmosphere was good, the sound effects (and voice acting!) were amazing. All in all I enjoyed this a lot. Doing an rts during a game jam, very daring!

It was really good, but some background music and some form of tutorial would be nice.

I really enjoyed the game a main menu and some sort of instructions are needed inside the game, but the game was really fun and impressive.

As others have pointed out, some polish would go a long way, but for what's there and the time constraints... pretty awesome :) I hope you continue to develop the game

I really like this type of games.
For a Compo entry, overall is one of the best from what I've seen so far!
Some polish on the art would take this game to a whole new level!

I like RTS games and liked your game. Some polishing and text messages could help us to understand better the game objectives

Selecting units wasn't that easy. It was hard to see at what point the enemies actually caused damage and the game started freezing up for multiple seconds after I played for 5 Minutes.

I couldn't figure out how to collect credits. I made bridges over to the node, but I don't really know what to do. It has some really good, sounds and the graphics are good. The theme is there, but it's only barely. I can certainly see this going somewhere with some polish. I do think it's not for me though. I'm just not an RTS player.

A crash I encountered trying to build a golem after they had all blown up:
```
FATAL ERROR in
action number 1
of Draw Event
for object obj_playercontroller:
Unable to find any instance for object index '6' name 'obj_golem'
at gml_Object_obj_playercontroller_Draw_0
Very very impressive in the compo, though the lack of some standard RTS conventions like bandboxing hurt the playability a bit. Bridges also seemed very finicky without great reason other than UI time constraints. But very very impressive.
Good start of the game, was enjoyable but does need work. Buildings could use some in game detail about how they work and rules for placement. Had issues placing bridges and buildings.
