Flash Flush by BustosMan

[raw]
made by BustosMan for LD 42 (JAM)

Flash Flush is a top-down 3D game where the player is set in a bathroom environment. The play area of the player's character happens to reside within the toilet, where the goal is to achieve the highest score possible before either touching the bottom of the toilet bowl or falling on the ground. To achieve a high score, the player must collect items in the toilet that add points to the score. However, if there's a chance that the toilet water is completely flushed, but the player is still alive, the player can choose to be flushed to restart and try to get a higher score.

Note: Please only rate this game in terms of the theme music that plays, not the sound effects that happen during gameplay.

Audio/Lighting Update (8/13/2018): Lowered both of the theme songs' volumes so as to not cause any annoyance to the player. Built lighting because I forgot to before I first submitted the game.

Hahawhen I saw the cheese in the screenshot, I thought the character would be a mouse - but it's a block :') The setting is funny and the controls are intuitive.

Really funny game, the gameplay is smooth and it's simple but pretty. Good work.

An online scoreboard would be a great improvement, but congratulations.

Cool game, that's some simple fun! Could be adapted to an interesting mobile project? Seems like a solid idea, but needs some more design, (more items - Maybe one of those butt sprayers (bidet?) to change the flow). I think the pacing can become too fast or too slow with the water speed currently. Interesting, overall!

Simple and enjoyable, definitely with more polish without changing the design would make for a nice mobile game.

Well made, I got bored of the gameplay pretty fast because it was too easy for me though. Nice game.

Hard to control if you don't have a qwerty keyboard. WASD is not playable for people with non standard keyboards. Consider to have secondary controls as the arrows keys in future games please :)
For the rest it looked interesting but i couldn't seriously playtest it.

A nice game that would work well on mobile with a few harder challenges. Funny concept. Graphics were simple but worked.

I liked the unique gameplay, it was quite addicting. I think having the water transparent would be better because it would give players more control about what items they pick up first, now they just come up somewhat randomly.

cue joke about a game about toilets being 'on stream'. I get the idea, I think, but it never seemed like you give the player enough info to plan the next move- if the water's too high, there's nothing to pick up, and if it's too low, there's too much stuff and you can't see it coming so you bump into it by mistake. Someone else mentioned transparent water as a possible fix, that'd be a good idea.

You should make that water a little more transparent, to be able to see items and plan your moves ;)

Funny idea ! I was first wondering what was happening since I was taking all the things present in the toilets. Then I understood the mechanics

Loved the buoyancy of the water :D
the music and the aesthetics could have fit together a bit better, interesting idea for gameplay tho !

I like the concept. The depth of view is a bit jarring for seeing which items to go for, but I suppose that's the "difficulty"? The gameplay got a bit boring pretty fast as it felt pretty easy to stay within the bowl and water. Maybe include some hazards (poop, snakes, etc.) to avoid so it gets more difficult to stay in the bowl and water without hitting a hazard?

Great concept! Toilet humor is always funny. =)

The design feels rather exploitable tho. Namely that gravity only really applies when you aren't moving, so you can glide over an empty toilet much longer than it looks like you should be able to.

Am I a ship? I think I'm a ship floating in the toilet.

Funny concept and a good (if simple) execution.

Ha, game gave me a good chuckle and had no real bugs. Bit hard to actually lose but nice music. 10/10 would play in the toilet again.

You mentioned that this was your first entry, so congrats on that. The concept of managing the water flow in the toilet is solid, but it felt a little lacking in challenge at times. The items spawning seemed to cluster just a bit to much, and with the top down view and the items on different z-levels, it was hard to pick and choose which ones I wanted to get to manage the water level. I found at times I would try to snag a coin and hit a ton of others by accident, leading to a massive rise in water, or a sudden drop.

Other than that bit, it was a fun play, and look forward to other entries you do.

It is funny and fun to play, congrats. Also the simplistic graphics are very clean:)
Next time try to spend some time on balancing the game - sometimes there were way too many objects on the screen, and sometimes they were too close to each other. It's impossible to get only the good items instead of all of them.

Nice entry!

Pros:
- Simple but nice to play

Cons:
- Items appearing feels a bit random, not enough reaction time for me, I just navigate randomly getting whatever it might appear

Obs:
Am I boat in a toilet? Why there are coins in the toilet? I have so many questions...
Also, for some reason when I try to play in Chrome the assets are not rendered, leaving me a black screen O_o

Cheers!

Awesome simple game! Played it for a lot longer than I thought I would. Honestly this could probably be iterated on quite a bit for a simple mobile game or something. My only suggestion would be to maybe make the water translucent so you could see what items are under it and plan better. Nice entry!

Very unique idea. I think adding in an overflow mechanic would have been good too so you have to balance your water level more carefully. Thanks for sharing your game with my stream awhile back. Your game was played around 1:12 into this vod: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/297885983

It was good to play. But it needs more challenge. It was so easy to gain score (i would just get every single object that appeared on the water with a really small amount of caution) and also I could stand on the edge of the toilet and avoid losing forever. But I think you can polish the idea and make a great mobile game out of it. Good luck

Interesting mechanic. I had a bit of trouble telling where the items were. It might have worked better if the water was transparent.
