Hats On! by recursor

[raw]
made by recursor for LD 40 (COMPO)

There will always be hats in this world and they'll always need to be stacked. You just happen to enjoy stacking them on your head. Hats On! is a hat-stacking, corn crackin' good time with two game modes to keep you on your toes. See what I did there? Plus the menu screen music was composed by my new cat Catteus Stephens. Yes. That is his name ... Catteus .. Stephens. Don't skip it. Catteus would be upset.

Instructions:

Move your player left and right using either the right/left arrow keys, the mouse + left click, or a joystick. Note that either the mouse or joystick is recommended due to the more precise control. Catch the hats on your head and stack them ... high ... higher ... even higher ... and so on.

WARNING: Contains some cat purring!

Game Modes

  • Hat Stacks

    • Stack hats to the required height. Each round reveals different hats which present different challenges.
  • 100 Hats

    • You have 100 hats. How high can you stack them?
    • The highest stacker in all the land will be immortalized in the online highest stacker club

The idea is good, I do think a 100 hat round is a little too much considering it really only matters until the very as far as it goes for keeping track of your high score. I left it afk for the last 50 and racked a bunch of hats on the side, ended at 5.7m although got up to 7m at one point in time. Audio was cracking my speakers as well but I like the humor in it.

@saucygames The audio cracking is probably a bug in Unity's WebGL, since I don't get it when I run it on the desktop. Thanks for the feedback. Yep. I found the audio crackling problem and fixed it. It turned out to be an issue with the music audio format and Unity's settings.

Cool game. Easy to get started and addicted to. :-) The walls are good but maybe doesn't have to be 20m tall? As it is now, you can get the hats to build up against the two walls and make a large tower of hats. Also after getting 20m as online record, at start the game zoom out to show the 20m mark and the hats fall a longer distance at start so they caught up each other while falling due to different speed. But once I catch the first hat the camera zooms in. Also I notice when you have high tower if you lose one hat at the bottom the camera adjust for that which shows your attention to details.

Funny stuff! Neat idea and well executed. Is it just me or does the game behaviour get very weird after doing a 100 hat run and then immediately trying again. It seems like the hats do not behave the same as they did on the first run. It's probably because you spawn the hats on the top of the screen and since the camera is zoomed out, it spirals out of control. Like this:

@antti-haavikko Nice job! I'll have a look at the camera code. It is probably a bug.

Made it to the 3rd hat. Went haywire after that. Loved how the hats moved depending on where you are moving, felt really good

I loved every minute of this. I was hoping that my score would be based on the highest I'd ever gotten rather than what I had at the end, but nevertheless it's a great game!

Hahaha. Very funny!

But when there are many hats stacked together with that physics. sometimes it looks like a p.n.s, sometimes it looks like a centipede.

Really very funny and fun to play!!

Not my usual cup of tea, but fun to play casually. Sound is quite good. I enjoyed the variety of hats, which not just look but also feel different from each other. Solid, simple game, congrats!

Nice unique idea. In the 100 hats mode, it seems like the best strategy is to create a log jam, which lets the hats continue to pile up without moving. I also tried to catch the pilgrim hats and red hats only, since those seemed to be the most stable. The small details like the eyes blinking on the face are a nice touch. The beat box style music and cat purring was really memorable. I like how it shows the line for my best score and how it dynamically calculates the current height.

Fun concept: only thing in the 100 hat challenge is that you can stuck the hats against the walls and then is all a mater of luck how hi you will go. I got 19 meter on my third try.

Very fun game! I loved the audio, it's fits with the game perfectly. The game itself gets rather challenging too. I was trying to stack thing in a correct way in the 100 hat challenge but gave up when I saw clogging the fall worked better for me.

Excellent little game! The idea is simple, but well executed, and definitely very funny. The only criticism is that without a cat to go with the purring, it just sounds like someone clearing their throat...

Very interesting game mechanic! Really enjoed with hat staking. Only cons for me is sound and music =(
It's cool if you made it by yoursellf but I dont like. Maybe because it repeats and annoys... I don't know =(

It's the dark souls of hat simulation! This game is awesome. Great use of the theme, hilariously fun gameplay, and the music & sound are excellent. I have no idea why a cat is purring but I'm into it! I beat all the main levels and got 17.8m on the 100 hat challenge but only because they got stuck in a giant pile. My only complaint about the gameplay is that it's a bit too random, if you get a weird hat on the other side of the screen it's almost impossible to get it safely. Maybe a tetris-style preview of which hat/where it'll spawn would be cool. I almost think it could use to be a little less wobbly, but that's where a lot of the comedy comes from so I'm not sure. Still it was super fun, excellent work! :D

Fun take on the theme.

I didn't make it too far (I think), I lost at the Ball Hat after two tries, I tried the 100Hats mode but, well, I'm kinda bad and only made it to something like 6m. :<

As for the gameplay, I found it a bit weird "feeling-wise" for the mouse-dragging, the fact that it wasn't 1:1 put me off a bit, but that may just be me.^^ I suppose with real 1:1 it would be a bit of a pain to not throw the hats off when moving. Other than that, it's great.

The hat physics is fun and let you try multiple things to reach your goal, which is a good thing, letting you try a faire playthrough stacking honnestly things or stacking things by building a "bridge of hats". It's always fun to mess with the physics of a game and try stupid things as a player.

The graphics are correct and nice enough, you made a good sample of hats, the "multiple facial expression" thing is a pretty cool touch.

The music goes well with the game, tell Catteus that he's a good musician. o/

As some said, it could be a nice & funny mobile game.

Good job! :)

Way more fun than I assumed when I saw a screenshot! Great job balancing the, well, balance.

I upped my fun level when I found the control scheme for me: that was holding down left click at all times and just moving the mouse left/right to move the guy. I felt this game me a lot more finesse than playing with the keyboard, and wow can the wrong lurch hurt you in this game!

After ball caps I thought, well dang there's nothing gonna be crazier than this! But the pilgrim hats were a bit more than I could manage, though wow I came so close.

Really nice entry here taking a simple system and getting the feel and balance spot on. The hat balance, the facial expressions, the loony tilting of the hat stack as it got taller, the interactions with the wall, the way hats could form odd stacks in a desperate bid to reach the sky... it was very nice.

One thing that hurt was the lame-duck situation where I've failed but I have to wait out a bunch of hats that I know won't be enough. I hit R hoping for an instant reload but no go. Not a huge deal but I figured I'd mention it as one small splinter I felt.

Very nice entry!

@pkenney Thanks for the critique. You can get to an options menu by either pressing escape or by clicking on the x in the upper right corner. You can thenchoose to turn off the music, exit, resume, or restart the level.
