IMPORTANT: Sounds are very important! Use headphones or decent sound system.

Navigate through old-school-maze-like levels, find enough power cells to power up escape pads and outrun energy draining viruses.

I wanted to include some accessibility settings so it wouldn't be %100 relied on the sounds but the social life happened. I'm planning to add them later (most likely I wont though :(...).

PS: I'm not sure if the Linux port is not working properly or is it just my Ubuntu.

PPS: I'm tweeting about the games I play and rate @game0wer. Write you game and twitter handle in the comments and will mention you :)

Very interesting take on the theme. I loved the use of sound as a game element, but found firing the allocator to be a bit annoying audiowise. I loved how you layered the elements in through level progression, allowing the player to learn as they go. I enjoyed this and would love to see it taken further.

@james-dunlap thank you, glad you liked it :) yeah, I only did the allocator sounds in bfxr. I probably should learn a decent audio editing program.

The sound idea was very cool! The gameplay was a lot of fun and was a really neat way to use the theme. - the only thing I might suggest is condensing the tutorials a little bit to get to the final gameplay a bit quicker :) . All in all, everything came together to create a pretty good atmosphere with some fun gameplay! Great work!

@emily-rizzo thank you! Yeah, I realized that the tutorial was too long a little too late :) Thanks for the feedback and glad you enjoyed it :)

This was really unique - in a good way. The sound-based mechanics were interesting, and although things started to slow down in the tutorial stages, they picked back up after you get the allocator. It was fun!

Agreed about the tutorials. I must admit I didn't get past the allocator. I play games in windowed mode whenever possible, and yours doesn't seem to capture the mouse fully. Fine when just panning, but as soon as I had to start clicking it's a big problem.

Otherwise a pretty slick work

An interesting prototype, the use of sound and theme is well found! I find a little weird the movement of the weapon otherwise it goes. With a better immersion of the narrator, and also a basic spatial context (better graphics) it can make a nice narration exploration game!

@eatthepath oh, I didn't realize that. I will fix it once the voting is over. Thank for the feedback.
@robowarrior1982 yeah, I was looking forward to make the graphics but sadly run out of time :( glad you liked it :)

Edit: I checked the rules again and it turns out that I can do small bug fixes. Will look into this mouse issue this evening!

Edit 2: I checked the game and seems to work fine on my pc :/ tested on Windows in 1024x768 windowed mode :(

such a good game ! I absolutely loved the 3D sound integration as a mechanic, which makes pacing through the mazes a lot easier. good work and good luck folks !

@robo-chiz Thanks, glad you liked it. When you destroy the red tiles or stun enemies, new red tiles spawns. I failed to fully utilize that mechanic due to the level design though :(

This was a very special experience, I really enjoyed it! It works very well with 7.1 sound. It would have been nice if the virus didn't touch you when stun or couldn't reach that far as it does kill you pretty fast (and I must say I felt the tension rises as I could ear the noise getting closer and closer). I think with proper graphics it would make for an amazing game. Good job!

@sharks sorry, I don't have a mac :( but you can download the source files, I used Unity 2018.2

@antonsem With unity you can still export to mac even if your not on mac. Look upi how to get missing modules then follow the instructions and download the mac module then in build settings the mac option will appear!

Is there a reason you opted out of audio? Without any antagonist to stop me, the game felt a little more tedious than fun. I did enjoy the navigation with sound concept. Interesting concept that could easily be fleshed out and become fun.

18. Aug 2018 · 07:05 UTC
@dk5000p yes, I opted out because I downloaded most of the effects from freesfx.co.uk. There are viruses later on. I realized that the pacing is way to slow for a game jam game but it was too late to fix :(

Nice concept !

I really like the audio navigation though it kinda feels hard to follow when you're in the middle of several batteries.

At first I was like "Sooo, how does this game fit the theme", and then the allocator came in and I thought that was a pretty clever use of the theme.

Makes you think before destroying every corrupted wall you encounter.

Keep up the good work !

Like others have said, the introduction of mechanics could have happened a bit quicker - maybe bring just the first level, then the radar, then the allocator?

I'm not sure about having the map be pitch black except for the player's spotlight - it set the mood, but having just a little bit of ambient light I think might have worked a bit better.

Using audio in this way is a really cool idea, and it worked really well.

@matoux42 great! Thank you for confirming that :)

@maksime Thank you, glad you liked it!

@rjhelms The pitch black thing is mostly because of the graphics. Or rather lack thereof :) Even with default Unity cubes, the darkness makes it look atmospheric :) Glad you liked it overall!

Nice idea! But the tutorial was way way too long, and the concepts weren't that hard it should have been only a minute. Also I liked the sound mechanic but for a game focused on sound I couldn't understand why you chose such an annoying sound effect for the allocator. It really bugged me everytime I shot. Also I didn't really notice the effect of more corrupted cells being created when I used it.

@shakedimus well I couldn't find an appropriate sound so I tried to do it myself with bfxr. Obviously, I failed :D thanks for the feedback!

Very good use of sound. If there was a jumpscare i wouldve pissed myself mind you. You could add some horror elements to see how that'll work - just an idea.

Once the radar appeared and a couple of minutes into the level, I stopped the game. This is because of the multiple thumping sounds and I couldn't locate some of the batteries.

But is a great atmospheric game.

interesting game play. does the sounds decrease in a linear fonction of the distance with the player ? maybe something in 1/r² would make it easier to find the right spot.

nice use of the sound
🎤 antonsem
25. Aug 2018 · 14:21 UTC
@tontonpizza it is set to logarithmic rollof, I think it is pretty much 1/r^2. At least pretty close to that :)

Wow! You transformed a maze game into a survival horror when sentinels start coming, and then you start running out of space and it's horrible! Uh I mean it's brilliant!

First levels help learning the game mechanics and also getting used to localize sounds without any danger and that's pretty much needed! I would've understand that, for a game jam, you wouldn't have the time to make these first levels, but you did, and that's really nice. It gives the game a progression of the difficulty of course, but also a true shape, almost like a story, the player feels like they played a complete game and not just a simple prototype.

As you mentionned it, the next step would've been accessiblity since the game is only based on audio, but it's very hard to be able to implement that in so little time. Overall, Congratulations!
