Catalango by Hikari Kyuubi

[raw]
made by Hikari Kyuubi for LD 39 (JAM)

About Game:

[Once upon a time] In a world full of rodent cities, where fireflies are used as resources and food, a great colossus - the Cat-Emperor Von Gikkingen - and his loyal minion - the Nameless Calango - started a conquer march.

Your mission, as the lizard-servant, is to get the famous resource to feed your Lord, avoiding the guardian rats along the way, avoid your Master mauling attacks... And at last, avoid letting the almighty colossus get too hungry, or you'll be the food.

So, prepare your little paws! Run! Jump! Loot and feed!

[P.S.: calango is a little lizard, try google :3 ]

Objectives:

Avoid to be hit by the rats and by the cat paw (3 hits and you're dead)

Move and jump your way to the fireflies (or dead rats), press E to take them, go to the cat food area (bellow his head, on the ground), and wait for the cat head to go down, so the cat can eat it (do not release the firefly for this)

Beware, if the cat is too hungry, he will eat you~

Remember, you must be holding the firefly for the cat or he won't eat it!

You need to do that with all of the fireflies (3) in all levels (3).

I like the art and music. However I found it difficult to understand what to do.

Jumping seems off you might try making the jump a little less. Jumping that high it made it very hard to get around.

At first I was like 'this is too hard I can't make these jumps' but after powering through I had a great time. The cats angry sounds were awesome!

Something with the controls feels just a bit off. Not to the point of unplayable, but I think the jumping is just a bit too sensitive or too jarring. It didn't affect my game play in any serious way, I just like to give a suggestion on a review.

Great work on the game! I'm going to revisit it a bit later on and see if I can get further.

Hi there,

I like the art of the cat, also the soundtrack has something catchy to it.
I put the three fireflies below the cat head, but he didn't seem to pick it up. Some feedback to the player would help :) Maybe jumping once when pressing the up key could improve the gameplay :)

@Nek, the rats appear in the 3rd level :3

Update the description after the @foxroxracer comment. You must be carrying the firefly so the cat can eat it.

The graphics and music help with the funny atmosphere of the game. The gameplay is also enjoyable, although the jump needs work. Great overall work.

I like the style, yet the controls were awkward. Perhaps speeding up the horizontal speed. Also, the pickup was unresponsive. Love the animation and the characters.

Took me a second to figure out what to do. I think the jumping might be a little too strong and a little too fast. Other than that this is a great start, I hope you continue with this idea after the jam!

I guess calangos don't know how to jump very well... Yeah, maybe we need to tweak the controls a little bit!
Thanks everybody for the reviews!

The controls, especially the jump, felt super slippery to me. The jump went a bit too high in most scenarios, so that made the buildings super annoying.

It was really cool how the cat affected gameplay though. The ground shaking, and riding his head were interesting concepts.

The art of the game is very cool !!! I really liked the cat. If cat eyes following the player would be wonderful !!! Good job!

Gravity is a bit strong, and continually jumping while holding down the jump button is a bit strange. Otherwise, concept was cool, the cat was great, and the music was fitting. I kinda wished that there was some notification to the player that they completed a level, as I didn't realize that I had moved on for a bit.

Great work nonetheless!

Tried it a couple of times, but my character vanished and things seemed to become unplayable from there :(

Music was good. The jump was too high though: physics felt kinda weird and it was hard to control the turtle. Nice little game though, I enjoyed it.
